I've only heard it before either with a gentler voice or sung to bagpipes. I used to listen to bagpipe music while revising for exams as it gets me thinking so the bagpipes behind it made me think.

I've only ever heard it previously read with a "lighter" voice - it was this rendition that brought the power of the words home to me.  The meaning violently clear in the tone.

I love Robert Burns. The funny thing is I've always understood it naturally & I'm supposed to be English.

Here's a very powerful rendition of Scots Wha Hae by Robert Burns as put to music by Steve MacDonald.  This interpretation brought the meaning of that poem home to me like a hammer blow - I never truly understood them before.

The Lordship of the Isles
Seawulf and Somerled by Steve MacDonald
In the long-boats Seawulf came,
Crying out the War god's name,
Highlander, raise your warning fire,
Seawulf's on his way,
To feed the battle-crow's desire today.

Isle of Man and Isle Tiree,
Faced Odin's giants of Valkyre,
Gaining control of Argyle,
The western highlands too,
Somerled has delivered us from you;

Seawulf will rise

Oh, oh, oh, oh, ooh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, ooh

Viking child, oh Viking child, oh Viking child,
Who will tame the wolf behind your smile...
Viking child

Viking child, so free and so wild,
Tell me why do you roam,
Battle on, the Seawulf in search of home.

I've been to Fort William many times. It's a nice, little shopping town while still being very scenic as it's still in the highlands with all the Lochs & mountains.

I've got Cunningham, Douglas, Brown & Lamont ancestors as well as a lot of others descended from the Irish O'Neill clan. So most of my ancestors came from Dunoon.

Ahhh.  My mother is a Cameron - born and bred near Fort William 😊 But I'm at home and at peace in the Borders - love the wildness and beauty to be found in both regions.  I wrote a series of verses a few months ago based upon a Border raid - inspired by The Candlemas Road.

Definitely. I love all of Scotland though. I have some Scottish highlanders as ancestors but also some ancestors who came from the borders & just South of Glasgow.

Definitely, the good thing is I've got a nice, flexible voice so everybody else likes me to sing too. I also like looking at photos of Scotland & equine pictures.

That's great. I normally find inspiration in events or think of certain things. I normally just get ideas which I have to get down, mostly in rhyme, if not as a story or song.

"For you" she whispered
Relishing the sweet sensation
Lips brushing his ear
Tenderly slipping a silvered blade
Betwixt his ribs

xxxxx

Slow building mist
My world fading from view
As a warm soft blanket
Your need overtakes me
Wraps me tight
Chains my soul to you

xxxxx

Each breath of air
Every single touch
Unleashes flowing currents
Unseen tendrils
Circling
Linking
Binding
You're the AC to my DC

Xxxxx

Do not fear the night
Embrace its rich Stygian darkness
For out of the dark night comes the light of day

xxxxx

 Soft morning dawn
Sunbeams gently edging
Flowing across an ethereal beauty
Spread across silk as if a banquet
Awaiting my prince

At Summer's end
When days turn sleepy
I joined the dotted lines of your words
To find you
Again
Amongst the lazy meadows

xxxxx

Ravens call in the night
Hidden in the shadows
To mock my mindless fright

xxxxx

Twas like stabbing a dead heart
Nothing 2 be lost
Nothing more 2 give
As the last star fell from the sky
Midnight faded 2 black

xxxxx

Fractured panes distorting my view
Shapes morphing
Becoming the nightmares within my mind

xxxxx

Slow burning flame
You the tinder
Me the spark
A bonfire ignited
To smoulder in eternity
Which none shall extinguish

xxxxx

Spilling like silk
Shining in the light
Crystal water runs over the dam
Nourishing the desert sands
Bringing life once more

xxxxx

 Each hot sliding touch
You press my buttons, baby
One by one
Tearing us down a long highway
Full throttle to reach the end
🚀

Xxxxx

Why fight what I most want?
Temptation is so close
My needs as demons crying out to be fed

xxxxx

Sweet essence of you
Sipped and savoured
Rolled upon my tongue
Blended on my palette
Addictive
I must have more
Need more

xxxxx

As a puzzle to be worked
There was a lovely logic
When you rode into my life
A knight on his Harley
Sweeping his princess away

xxxxxx

Yet does anyone think of that sun?
She's eaten from within
Giving freely her energy to the universe
What can renew her?
🔥

Xxxxxx

Your words
Your touch
Ignited a slow fire
Burning inhibitions away

Then came a furious rain
Submerging us
Drowning in passion
❤️

Xxxxx

Dancing motes captured
Spiralling within a light beam
Each a prisoner
Trapped
When the light fades
So will their cage

Xxxxx

North Star shining in the night
Guide me safely home tonight
Thru the ice & snow
Show me where I must go

This was a chain following my visit to the ghost town of Graftin - I saw a house and the first series of lines immediately came to mine - this may grow as more lines come to me.

Folks round here called her Miss Eliza
She was married five times
Buried four husbands
They never found the fifth

Rumours flowed
Filling the reservoirs of gossip
How could someone so young
So reserved
Have caught the eye of so many

Ethereal as the moon
Men gravitated towards her
She shone so bright
None saw the shadows
The ravens which gathered

A batch of musings...

Desirous of all that lay ahead
A future of which he could only dream
He lost the beauty of that he already had

xxxxx

Leaden weighted steps
Fortune's wheel spins
Fate spools another thread
Time hangs heavy
Suspended
A symphony of aches unending

xxxxx

Colours bleeding slowly into one
Did I not see their patchwork warning?
Nor heed the pooling thickness upon the floor?

A solitary dancer
Lost in his world
Moves to their beat
Was excess pressure used?
When the best arrangement
Was to stay in my arms

Xxxxx

A stranger's smile beckoned me forth
Into the shadows deep I walked
Lost quickly from sight and mind

Xxxxx

Inhaling your words
As life giving oxygen
You ripple through every sinew
Wrapping yourself around my heart
Protecting always

xxxxx

Gentle summer breeze
Ripples amongst meadow grasses
As if heavenly fingers
Drawn to such scent
Run playfully
Wafting serenity

You were the one
My soulmate through time
Battles won
Never lost
None could tear us apart
Stronger together
Never to part

xxxxx

Lips do lie
Eyes do hide
Secrets buried
Yet always there
He watches
He listens
He knows your heart
He knows the truth

Xxxxx

Lips do lie
Eyes do hide
Secrets buried
Yet always there
He watches
He listens
He knows your heart
He knows the truth

Xxxxxx

Gazing in dry mouthed awe
As rivulets of water
Trace sensual paths
Across taught muscles
Oh how jealous to be
Of a simple shower

xxxxx

Sinews scream as they rip apart
The wild beast behind the smiling eyes
Fighting its way to the surface and to the light

xxxxx

Everywhere you go
Take the sunshine with you
Leave warmth and smiles behind
Be that someone others wish to see return

xxxxx

Delicate as a dandelion
She dances in the meadows
Amidst butterflies & dragonflies
And all things bright & beautiful

xxxxxx

Delicate as a dandelion
She dances in the meadows
Amidst butterflies & dragonflies
And all things bright & beautiful

xxxxxx

Creeping softly, I feel you enter my mind
Icy tentacles slipping inside
Rifling through my innermost memories

xxxxxx

DUET WITH NEIL

Chill wind whips
cold song singing
misted breath
icy spray
the glass of my composure
shatters
as the Ice Queen comes

Chill fingers slip
As icy stilettos
Betwixt the ribs of man
To freeze whatever love is left
Or hope which burns
Within hearts

Ah sweet cold, friend to the boundless dark ...

 A frozen wasteland to some
And yet a paradise beyond measure
Beyond any imaginings of mortal man

Heart-deep and deeper still
till no secret remains
untouched by this exotic chill
I'm claimed now
bound to she who reigns

To be cherished forevermore
Held in icy stasis
A frozen image captured
Without life yet undead
To be gazed upon nightly

And yet I dare imagine truth,
the affright to mortal soul,
I dare to burn
and burning, die
reborn
to serve the Cold

Cold is a harsh mistress
She'll take your heart & freeze it out
Your limbs she'll twist & fragment
Be sure, my friend, be sure

xxxxxx

Sink neath tidal waves of desire
Lost in hidden shoals
Drawing you into a riptide of lust
Amidst frolicking whirlpools

xxxxxx

Whisper your name
Stroking your dreams
Drawing forth your deepest desires
Secrets to be uncovered
With each breathless kiss

Xxxxxx

Each bloody sip
One taking from
To give to the other
An intimate sharing
Freely given
Penetrating deep
Never to be forgotten

Xxxxxx

A battle crow called
I heard it's cry
High upon the wind
It's dark shadow
I saw it hover over
Death it's warning purpose to be

xxxxxx

Seasons come
Seasons go
As time slips by
Years gather
Collected treasures
Letting go can be hard
Yet life moves on
And so must I

Xxxxx

Into focus
The world slips
Details missed before
Gradually come to light
Sunset develops a new arena
One in which my eyes delight

Xxxxx

A long ways we've come
Through turns
Twisting and wild
Yet here we stand
He and I
Still joined as one
Until death do we part

xxxxx

The rumble you feel deep in your bones
Tis not an earthquake you stand upon
But the stirring of one long hidden below

xxxxx

'Twas a game
Played by two souls
Each seeking the other
Your smile
Your voice
That was when you entered me
Melting to become one
#

Xxxxxxx

 In Spring time's youth
In years gone by
When my limbs were strong
Children could climb me
But no longer
Withered & weak I wilt

Xxxxxx

Build a wall high and wide
Let not a ray of light seep through
For where light may creep so may darkness follow

xxxxxx

For centuries I've lain
Patiently waiting
Listening for your step
As a fallow field
Untouched
Anticipating your nurturing love

Xxxxxx

Seduce my mind
Tempt my demons
And call me yours forevermore

xxxxxx

After the storm
Descended screaming silence
Castaway on a shadowless shore
Blistered fingers crumple
Left out in the cold again

xxxxxx

As the owl calls in the night, turn not around to return from whence you came, for nothing is left of what you once knew...

xxxxxx

They told me no
Forbid our union
Raised barriers between
Yet in reckless inclination
I leapt from the cliff
Nose dived into love

Xxxxxx

I never knew
Nor realised
How much you'd come to mean to me
With just one word
Desire personified
You owned my soul
From day one

Xxxxxx

Dreams are but the portal to the innermost desires we dare not speak of in case they shatter at our feet.

xxxxx

Runaway dreams echo in my mind
Adrift upon haunted oceans
Writhing in sleep
Yr name on my lips
Yet my minds eye describes his eyes
xxxxx

You chipped away my shell
Drew me gently to the light
Thinking myself alone
Yet there you were
Your words a chisel to my freedom

Xxxxxx

Gaze steady upon a distant horizon
Where dreams dance 4ever
Low growl beneath my hips
Riding into oblivion
Rumbling Harley roar

Xxxxx

Submerse yourself beneath my love
Drown your moans in a tidal wave of desire
As seaweed streaming
To wrap myself close around you

Xxxxx

Each turn upon a spindle
Unspooling a lifetime of memories
Each span of life gone in an instant

Xxxxx

A signpost fallen
Which way?
Destiny awaits
However impatient
All our hopes unfulfilled?
Who am I kidding?
My hardest decision yet

Xxxxx

Circles of time
Never ending
Universe spinning
Endlessly
Turning ever faster
I whirl once, twice
Meeting myself
As I tumble by

xxxxx

Do U ever wonder
When the night grows cold
the very air holds its breath
What would've happened
If U had only stayed?

Xxxxx

'Twas a moonlit night, just like this, when a dark mysterious stranger drew me under his spell

Xxxxx

Rumours ride the wind this night
Given wings by many lips
To tempt & taunt
Sinking their talons deep
Surely they must be true

Xxxxxx

Whispered words to conjure the demons
Drawing such forth from the black abyss
Binding them close in spellbound chains

xxxxx

Drenched portals of the soul
Solemnly turn heavenward
Unanswered questions
Mysteries unresolved
Churn in confusion
Where R U?

xxxxx

As wraiths in the night
Stealing slowly they come
Darkly spreading across the land
Leaving death in their wake

👤

xxxxx

Within mirrored rooms
Hidden deep inside my mind
Memories, desires, wishes
Flood my mischievous manor
I smile offering invitation

Xxxxx

Writhing silent beneath my skin
I feel him slowly crawl
That snake who lurks within us all

xxxxx

Lightning in a cage
That's a name from the past
They once called him that
Shouted that name in the ring
A winner he was
And is

xxxxxx

His want of any compassion
In the face of such dire need
Led to his downfall at the hands of a mob

xxxxx

Dreams explode as shooting stars
Boiling my mind's calm sea
I shall not forget U
How could I?
I'd not make that same mistake again

Xxxxxx

They wait
Those men
Those wolves which circle
They smell the fear
As the end draws near
Shadows in the wings
To haunt the throne

xxxx

 Take my hand
Hold it tight
Never let it go
As we walk this path
Winding where not we know
Beside you I'll be
Forever and a day

With every fibre of my being
I call upon such devilish torments
As shall hold you enslaved
In futile struggle
Until I cry hold!

Xxxxx

Upon acres of Egyptian perfection
Passionately seeking satisfaction
Throwing ourselves in wild abandon
We spilled together as one

Xxxxxx

Upon this lonely battlement
Storm blown beneath boiling skies
Shall I evermore await your return

xxxxxx

With incidental mastery
For you were considered evil
Gods decreed you be my paramour
Murmuring a corny quote
Lips brush yr soft cheek

Xxxxx

Scattered across the heavens
As diamonds upon velvet
A glittering love letter
Written in the stars
From Gods on high
To us all

xxxxxx

They called it a sign of the Devil
Proof if any were needed
The telltale mark which meant your death

xxxxxx

Washed from a terrace of hopeless hearts
Dragged under by burning tides
Beyond the point of no return
Bruised sky my only witness

xxxxxx

 Crows gathering in the night
To quark a solemn lullaby
Rest now, master, under their watchful gaze

Xxxxxx

Now I am the master
At last I am the one
You shall knee before me
Accepting what I grant
Denying me nothing
Mine forevermore

xxxxxxx

Shine your light as bright as the sun
Flood every crevice in sight
To chase the demons back into night

xxxxxx

I had Joan of Arc in my mind for this one:

In denial they stand
Faces turned ugly with hate
Howling demons made human
Blinded by yr innocence
Your shining purity of truth

Xxxxxx

As a flame everlasting
You make my soul burn
With every word
Each soft touch
You stoke the fire of my longing
And fan my love

xxxxxx

 Running from a haunted past
My mind a maze of empty rooms
Wrapped in memories
Suffocating
I cld live again
If I leave it 2 chance

xxxxxx

We are but a reflection
One to the other
True desires unhidden
Bared to the light of day
Unhindered by society's rules
We love

xxxxxx

Once upon a time
I lay in peaceful slumber
Unaware I was drifting in life
Then U came
Jump started my heart
Now I'm wide awake

xxxxx

"run!" the voice hissed within my mind
My leaden limbs unheeding
Overactive imagination screaming "beware!"

xxxxx

A veiled sun shone down
Bathing a field in a golden glow
Twas as if an angel alighted
2 bless the creatures scurrying 2 & fro

Xxxx

Sharpened steel, silver tipped
Turns slowly upon the table
Pointing it's deadly accusation out to all

xxxxx

Take my hand
Hold it tight
Never let it go
As we walk this path
Winding where not we know
Beside you I'll be
Forever and a day
