That is brilliant! I will have to share it with my friends.
Utterly lovely!
In ancient Greece (469 - 399 BC) Socrates was widely lauded for his wisdom. One day the great philosopher came upon an acquaintance who ran up to him excitedly and said
"Socrates, do you know what I just heard about one of your students?"
"Wait a moment," Socrates replied. "Before you tell me I'd like you to pass a little test. It's called the Triple Filter Test."
"Triple filter?"
"That's right," Socrates continued. "Before you talk to me about my student let's take a moment to filter what you're going to say. The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?"
"No," the man said, "actually I just heard about it and..."
"All right," said Socrates. "So you don't really know if it's true or not. Now let's try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my student something good?"
"No, on the contrary..."
"So," Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about him, even though you're not certain it's true?"
The man shrugged, a little embarrassed.
Socrates continued. "You may still pass the test though, because there is a third filter - the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my student going to be useful to me?"
"No, not really"
"Well," concluded Socrates, "if what you want to tell me is neither true nor Good nor even useful, why tell it to me at all?"
The man was defeated and ashamed.

Nah... we wouldn't be able to have debates on Sampras being great on clay...
I never said Sampras was 'great' on clay. I said Sampras wasn't as bad as some Fed fans (yes, that's right) make him out to be. By his own standard, it wasn't great but if we judge it by normal standard, then winning 3 clay titles (one being Rome Masters), reaching RG semi once, and qtr final 3 times isn't too shabby. Add to the fact that, he had beaten the likes of Bruguera, Courier, Muster at RG and others like Agassi, Corretja, Kafelnickov outside RG but on clay. That's pretty good whether someone admits it or not.
Also, mind you, I am one of the Admins here and I can totally edit your post and make it to MY likings. Next time you come here you will see your own post says, "I love Sampras so much. I think he was great on clay." lol :p

outstanding stuff. I like fables like that. my grandfather must have told me a few hundred when I was a little kid.

I used to love reading Aesop's Fables when I was a kid. Loosely based on a story around a chinese proverb with a moral at the end.
Belling the Cat
Once upon a time, all the mice met, together in council, to discuss the best means of securing themselves against the attacks of the cat.
After several suggestions had been debated, a Mouse of some standing and experience got up and said, "I think I have hit upon a plan which will ensure our safety in the future, provided you approve and carry it out. It is that we should fasten a bell around the neck of our enemy the cat, which will, by its tinkling, warn us of her approach."
This proposal was warmly applauded, and it had been decided to adopt it, when an old Mouse got upon his feet and said, "I agree with you all that the plan before us is an admirable one: but may I ask who is going to bell the cat?"
Moral of the story: It is easy to propose impossible remedies.

That's actually pretty good if true. Maybe you should put every new poster through those three tests in order to qualify for your forum. lolol :P

There are some great minds out there like Friedrich Nietzsche no doubt!
-
My favorite quote ever, Friedrich Nietzsche:
“Nobody can build the bridge for you to walk across the river of life, no one but you yourself alone. There are, to be sure, countless paths and bridges and demi-gods which would carry you across this river; but only at the cost of yourself; you would pawn yourself and lose. There is in the world only one way, on which nobody can go, except you: where does it lead? Do not ask, go along with it.”
