great post. I agree.
also the French have been pretty brutal to Rafa over the years. now he will own the French forever and ever.
his statues will be all over paris one day as they will use that ploy to lure even more tourists to france.
one day Rafa will have 11 RG crowns. French will surely learn their lesson by then if they have not already.
French davis cup coaches have trashed rafa for years saying things like he is too muscular for tennis and stuff. they said he gives tennis a bad name.
It's not the French people, it's the select few who want to paint the canvas the way they want it to be. I read a ton of articles where they said the French were firmly in Nadal's corner. I think the French have come a long way. Initially, they followed what the "experts" said, but slowly and surely Rafa won them over. It's just the commentators who keep painting a false picture.
It's funny though, because they actually got people to put Nole as the favorite, when statistically the numbers didn't bear that out.
But, I've seen this before. They did the same thing with Pete and Andre. They act like they can only like one player at a time. So immature.

Rafa's clay statue by Nike:
http://www.tennis-x.com/xblog/2014-06-10/16025.php
The Nadal sculpture will appear in the window of the Cinquième Set store in Paris, accompanied by a plaque that reads: “Legends are made from different stuff”.
This is so ironic. I remember when Nadal first came on the scene, they did everything they could to pit Nadal against Federer. They said Federer was graceful and elegant; Nadal was brutish, like a bull in a china shop. They harped on seconds between serves for the first time in history and attributed it to Nadal being a rulebreaker. They made numerous references to his "quirks," but no one else's on tour. Except Djokovic who they also viewed as a "threat" to the legacy they were building. As Andy progressed, he too was maligned, they called him pouty and made a big deal about anything that they could.
I thought, and still think, that this was one of the stupidest ploys in the history of tennis. For one thing, they had what would become the Big Four, and they should have embraced the different styles and the excellence of their play. That would have been a great way to grow the sport that they "claim" to love.
And now, ten years later, the man they maligned is a legend in the game. Novak too is becoming, or is, a great. But the tactic of division does nothing for tennis. Now that Federer is aging and they still need to drum up interest in the sport, they are lucky that Nadal has played so well, for so long, because these acts could have sabotaged tennis by presenting one as a cheat, and the other one as a saint.
Can you imagine if they had operated in the interest of the sport? Tennis wouldn't be lagging so much in the U.S.
They shot themselves in the foot.
But thankfully, people made their own decisions and all the bad press in the world could not keep Nadal down. I doubt they'll learn their lesson. Obstinate, biased, and ridiculous people.

it is not just my opinion. general masterclass also sees the same thing I see.
even rafa says it himself. he said he doesn't like to hit too many backhands.
you can just watch him in a match or in practice. its a habit that he has developed.
it only takes him a second to start favoring the forehand.
not much can be done at this point. he has 13 majors and counting.
he has the highest winning percentage in the open era. so he makes it work anyway.
even jim courier said some of the same things that we say here.
he leads in many return stats but those stats conceal something too. he has lost some matches his year for example. in those matches there was 4 things that were very obvious:
**stats are averages as you know so what is concealed is that he has not been able to count on his return and his backhand wing in the clutch in those matches that he lost. his backhand was really off and his return was weak against ferru at monte carlo for example. same thing happened against almagro the following week in Barcelona.
**when you are not confident enough with your backhand, it throws off the rest of the game. remember that he is a baseliner so both wings have to be strong and efficient and consistent. you cant play the match with a forehand alone from your backhand corner.
1. backhand was sub par
2. return of serve in general was sub par but even more so off the backhand wing
3. court coverage was sub par. he gives up too much court
4. his fitness has taken a hit
at any rate some of these problems will go away if he can bag another RG crown. he will regain his confidence again.
and for the long run, he just has to work a little harder.
good news is that he has been improving with each week now. he is also looking far more focused. he is finding his rhythm off the ground and the backhand is looking more effective and efficient.
I see an intense and business like look on his face in the matches.
he had this look at the last u.s. open also. so its all good.
he needs a good workout against ferru so this match is just what the doctor ordered. it will do him good.
he has to win it and he will.
All true, and I hope you're right about the last statement. Winning RG.

So true. He acts the same way he acted when he first came on tour. It is amazing to not be able to detect any smugness on his part. He just seems happy to be in the position that he's in, and grateful for all of the love and support.
"It's not the usual enormous ego of a superstar, but it's a superstar cloaked in the spirit of a journeyman. He works as hard as someone trying to get to the top even when he is at the top of the heap." Just perfect definition by Thetruth.
...And next time I promise I'll warn you TT, so we can enjoy Rafa in PokerStars. ;)

These are the highlights of the PokerStars event: Rafa Nadal vs The World:
I watched live... And it was very cool, a super light and fun atmosphere. :)
How did you watch it live? It was televised?
He's so cool about his loss. No excuses, just congratulate!
I watched through the Pokerstars channel on youtube, but at faceboock was possible to play with Rafa and ask questions to him on twitter too.
but as you said my friend, what matters is our Rafa feeling happy :D
Wow! Next time I will be more aware. I didn't know those options were available. Thank you.
-
Rafa's popularity is skyrocketing folks. he is wildly popular.
people want just want to see him. they want to watch him play and they want to watch him practice.
they just want to be associated with him.
in light of all that, he remains unchanged and down to earth. I think he has done a great job of handling his skyrocketing popularity.
So true. He has always been very popular, but it does seem to be skyrocketing lately.
It's totally true. I also see that the popularity of Rafa is growing at a fantastic level.
He is being compared by many people as a hero of flesh and bone, because Rafa shows your human side of pain, struggle, grow with its ups and downs of life... This is simply a sublime contradiction.
People look at the Rafa's attitudes and they identify with him... and this reflect on them.
...Their strength, humility, respect and friendliness make him an example to be followed and admired.
Beautifully put, Angel. That's what's most striking to me. It's not the usual enormous ego of a superstar, but it's a superstar cloaked in the spirit of a journeyman. He works as hard as someone trying to get to the top even when he is at the top of the heap. His love of the game makes you enjoy tennis more. He plays tennis the way sports should be played.

BTW, here's some information I got from Twitter that I thought was interesting.
http://www.nadalnews.com/2014/02/23/rafalint-february-23rd-4/#.Uwrssowo4iQ
“I’m not very happy with the way I played yesterday, but I think today I was able to play with a little bit more calm, play a little bit longer and go a little bit more for the points. I played a more solid match today.”
Racquet Reaction: Nadal d. Dolgopolov – by Ed McGrogan (tennis.com)
I label Dolgopolov that way with the utmost respect: He’s a master at changing speeds, creating angles, and giving his opponents all too much to think about with his wacky game. It was enough to beat David Ferrer, Nicolas Almagro, and Fabio Fognini—three clay-court studs—in Rio. But there are studs and there is a star, and Nadal’s mastery of the clay-court game was way too much for Dolgopolov to handle today.
Rafael Nadal reaches Rio final – AP via espn.com
“I played one of the best matches of my life,” Andujar said. “Maybe the best. But I had a great one across (the net) from me.”

Maybe the week of rest will do him good. He seemed really tired in Rio, except for today, a bit.
don't really know why.
he blew away at least two of his opponents.
he really needs to start getting more fit again. clay season gets more and more grueling as he gets older.
he has 2-3 years left at the top max. he has to try to take a shot at history.
perhaps the bad back is keeping him from doing some track work.
Maybe the back issue didn't allow him to prepare the way he would have in the past. He seemed to be just trying it out in Rio, and then went all the way to the final, so maybe that's why he was exhausted.

all roads now lead to Paris.
so health is key now. he is taking RG if he shows up healthy there.
he has got to let Miami masters go and go get on clay.
that protects the health.
-
Good, maybe he can rest and come back hungry.
I sure hope so.
-
After the win today Rafa will have about a week off and then he will play Indian Wells where he is the defending champion. I don't think he will go to Miami this year. That will give him about 4 weeks until the claycourt season.
-
he is going to have to take it easy in indian wells and let Miami masters go.
it is way the hell too risky to put in too much time on the hard courts before the single most important clay season of his life.
its over if the back goes in Miami.
people have absolutely no idea how hard it is for him to dominate clay starting in monte carlo. it takes absolutely massive effort. and he has been doing it for a decade.
I hope he takes your advice.

Much, much tougher than I expected! Rafa's serve was nonexistent, the movements was not there either. He needs to practice hard. I don't know how is that going to happen with the back issue.

MADRID (AP)
Rafael Nadal doesn't expect to miss any tournaments as a result of the back injury that contributed to his loss in the Australian Open final.
A statement from the world's top-ranked player says he will have another medical exam on Monday after doctors in Barcelona examined his back following his return from Australia.
Nadal lost Sunday's final in Melbourne 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka after he injured his back.
Nadal says he still plans to play his next tournaments in Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Indian Wells and Miami.
Doctors have prescribed anti-inflammatory medication and physical therapy to speed his recovery.

-
rafa travels to Melbourne today.
he will resume practice on Tuesday.

Very happy with the match today! Another title that was missing from Rafa's collection :)
-
i had a feeling that Rafa was going to snatch this title this time.
here is match summary from tennis.com:
Despite having been stopped cold twice by Gael Monfils at this same tournament before, Rafael Nadal triumphed in three sets over the Frenchman today, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-2, to capture his 61st career title—and his first at the Qatar Open.
The first set was over in 23 minutes, a mere eye-blink in Nadal time. It was a more or less unmitigated disaster for Monfils, who double-faulted twice to be broken to 0-2, was broken again for 0-4 after an errant forehand, and looked very much like the man whose record in ATP finals coming into this match stood at 4-15. Nadal, by contrast, was sharp, executing simple plays beautifully, pouncing on anything short, and producing eight winners for two unforced errors, including an exquisite curling, half-volleyed forehand pass down the line for 4-0.
Aletdown of some sort was perhaps inevitable after such a dominant first set, and it arrived quickly. A cluster of errant forehands saw Monfils break to lead 1-0, and the world No. 31's level rose sharply. He stepped in closer to the baseline to take away some of Nadal's time, and hit with more heavy spin to set himself up for his trademark flat winners hammered from deep.
After saving two break points with big serves at 3-1, Monfils was leading 40-15 at 4-2 before an abrupt and effortless injection of pace on Nadal's forehand got him into the game. The world No. 1 broke, as Monfils suddenly seemed to lose confidence or concentration; perhaps both.
But recovering quickly for an exchange of rapid holds, it was Monfils who took the initiative in the tiebreaker. At 2-3, Nadal serving, Monfils worked his way into the net and forced a defensive lob long from Nadal. It was a slender advantage, but not even crashing into a camera position could disturb Monfils' hold on the proceedings, and he took the second set with an ace.
Monfils' headstrong play continued, for a time. He went on to save two break points in his first service game of the final set, then took a 0-30 advantage on Nadal's serve at 1-1, reading a body blast beautifully and producing a sweet backhand passing shot. As quickly as his purple patch had arrived, however, it seemed to desert Monfils, as he reverted to the impatient play which characterized his first-set performance, going for winners far too early in a quest for quick points. Nadal held, then earned the decisive break to lead 3-1.
Monfils had one last real chance to get back into the match, earning 0-40 as Nadal served to consolidate that break, but he hit back to his opponent instead of into space on his best opportunity. Then, he missed a chance to stop a rally and challenge a ball he correctly believed to be out, instead of waiting for the call.
Nadal's steadier play and surer aggressive instincts began to pay dividends once again. Throughout the match, he won the battle of court-positioning, and although Monfils' ability to produce winners from unlikely positions temporarily redressed the balance in the second set, Nadal's superior tactics and more consistent execution swung the third set decisively in his favor. With Monfils serving at 2-5, a dominant Nadal hustled him into repeated errors, and then took his second championship point to start his 2014 season with a title.

I just caught the third set and them boys was banging. It was good to see Gael playing so tough, but he did make some questionable decisions.
Although it's highly unlikely that Rafa wouldn't have raised his level even more to counter that. Rafa said this was the first year he started the season with a title.
-
congrats to rafa and his fans.
he gets it done. monfils was removed from the facilities in 3 sets.

they are working now but i am still having some problems.
it might be time to pick up a new computer. i need a more powerful computer anyway.
i will have to make the time in the next 2 days to go grab one. i am not going to order one on the internet. it takes too long.
i will just go to Best Buy.

it would be nice if folks like michael nadal, rafaisback, cristti, and few others posted here once in a while but it is what it is.
we will just have to kick back and relax and let things happen.
we just have to endure the infancy phase of Camelot.
there would be no spring if there was no winter.
chrissti mentioned that she was going to come over. She knew exactly where I had been spending my time.
she is an awesome poster.
it is just nice to have more options. I can post anywhere but I am here more right now because it is fun to try to create and build stuff for Camelot.
all the other places are already all built up.
I want to relish this challenge. I think we are all relishing it.
it is just good clean fun. we get to build and we get to create.
-
Australian Open is here lady TT. just days away now.
I am still picking Rafa for the title. I thin k he will play into the form that is needed to take the title.
also he can meet nole only in the final so he does not have to worry about anything except getting into the final. and then he should be able to take it from there.
he did not play well today. I was out on the road with some friends so I did not see the match.
he made too many errors and his break point conversion was sloppy.
take a look at the stats. basically the courts are too fast.
he will have to cut down on the errors tomorrow and he has to return well.

It is interesting that the AO is so close now. It seemed like it was taking forever now here we are. Any assessments about where everybody appears to be? What does everyone think about Rafa, Andy, Djokovic, and Federer?
Rafa is playing so-so, which might be good since he's usually pretty good about getting himself up to snuff.
Andy just needs more matches, but with a major on the line, he might put it into another gear.
Djokovic has been on fire. He looks great going into the Oz, and I'm sure he's motivated as all get out.
It sounds like the new stick is working for Federer so I'm sure he's pretty excited about that.
Haven't seen del Potro in awhile, so not sure about him.
Tsonga seems to be at his usual level.
And Berdych seems to be in a mini slump.
At any rate I can't wait. I'm trying to get my stuff done around the house so that I can relax and enjoy the first major of the year.

Rafa snatches another win. this time against gulbis in straights.
he appears to be improving.
he had over 30 unforced errors in his last match against tobias kamke.
this time just 14 against gulbis.
good to see him get these matches under his belt as the Australian Open looms. it is now just 9 days away.

at one point today we had 22 folks checking out the forum:
that is members and guests. not too shabby if you ask me.
we keep moving in the right direction.
I think a lot of credit has to go to general CETSVids. he is the rock of Camelot.

and then there is you (lady TT), emma, sara, laurice, and all the others.

The forum is moving along very nicely if you ask me. You all have done a fabulous job by offering things foreign to most online groups, respect and reciprocity. A place where adults can congregate and behave in a civilized manner.
And yeah, all of the people here are really cool too.
the almighty works in mysterious ways lady TT.
to some it may not look like we are making progress but we really are. it takes a while to build engaging content and cool features.
we are still just taking baby steps and learning along the way.
and the almighty will show us the way one day. all we have to do is believe and stay positive.
it takes a few strong willed people to keep believing and keep building for the future.
just look at what general CETSVids is doing. he is knocking it out of the ball park at his center. he believes and he keeps creating and he keeps building.
you too are a huge part of this Camelot magic that is unfolding here. this is what building from scratch looks like.
and we have already come a long way in just a few short weeks.
I don't remember how many members there were when I joined, but it has almost doubled since I came over here as a serious poster. I think the forum is doing mighty fine.
What would be nice is if we could continue to get quality posters, instead of a certain quantity of posters.
I don't have anyone in my circle of friends who watch tennis, but I will continue to brainstorm some ideas for recruiting (that won't get me in trouble). And thanks for your kind words, as always.

Paul Gasol is a professional baskletball player with the Lakers. here is what he said about Rafa:
Today a piece about Rafa written by his friend and fellow athlete Pau Gasol appeared in El Pais. As often happens, Genny sent along a translation. (Thanks!)
RAFAEL NADAL. Solidez y confianza. – by Paul Gasol
RAFAEL NADAL.
Strength and confidence.
The mentality and the ability of overcoming of the best Spanish player of all time allowed him to recover his best level and return to the number one of the world.
The truth is that it is really difficult for me to say something that has not already been said to describe Rafa’s season. After seven months sidelined due to an injury and dropping to number five in the ATP ranking, nobody doubts returning to competition is tough, physically and mentally. The return is very complicated, you can have all the desire in the world, but it has to be planned in detail. You know everybody is on the lookout and you wonder if your body will endure the physical demands of competition and if the confidence, that impalpable something, will go on with you. As big tennis fan that I am, and because of the esteem I feel for him, I have not lost any detail of his big year. He reappears in the tournament in Chile in February, where he gathers strength during the week and, without reaching its best, manages to make it into the final. For any other athlete, it may be a success, but it being Rafael Nadal, [reaching the final] tastes very little. In this way, if there were doubts, from this comeback [in Chile] he begins a winning streak with consecutive wins in tournaments in Brazil, Acapulco and Indian Wells that make him gain confidence and, again, the respect of his opponents. The rest of the season continues competing at the highest level, to finish the year winning 10 tournaments, including two Grand Slams (and the eighth Roland Garros!), Five Masters 1000 and regaining the number one of the ATP ranking. As an athlete, there are no words to describe his return to the courts at this level, and as a fan, it is a pleasure to be able to enjoy his achievements again. It’s a real honor to have him as a friend. Congratulations and for many years, Rafa!
Pau Gasol is a basketball player in Los Angeles Lakers.

Here's another article from nadalnews.com.
This one sounds encouraging, I think.
http://www.nadalnews.com/2013/12/30/its-a-good-knee-new/#more-49794
(Doha, December 30 DPA.) – For the first time in more than two years, Rafael Nadal feels no pain in his knees. A stem cell treatment completed a few weeks ago allows him to face the season with renewed optimism, after he got to regain the number one in the previous season playing with antiinflammatories for a big part of it.
“It’s too early to know how definitive is the treatment, because I’ve only been working for three weeks. But it’s the first time in more than two years that I have no pain in the everyday life”, Nadal said in Doha.
The Spanish tennis player revealed his renewed confidence in his punished knees in the press conference prior to his participation in the tennis tournament in the capital of Qatar, which began today and where tomorrow he will make the debut against the Czech Lukas Rosol.
In previous years, Nadal had platelet rich plasma injected, which the player considered as “potentially crucial” to save his career.
The use of stem cells now facilitating the recovery of his cartilages is a novelty that his team decided to incorporate at the end of the last season, in November, and so far the result is excellent, although Nadal was unable to give precise details of the nature of the procedure.
thanks for sharing that article with the Rafa fans lady TT.
I still worry because he can overdo it on the hard courts.
I mean the treatment is fine but to compliment that treatment with at least some reduction in hard court activity and also trying to improve a little bit will do the trick.
it will save the knee and it will help prolong the career.
he can play at the top level for 3-4 more years if he plays his cards just right.

at one point today we had 22 folks checking out the forum:
that is members and guests. not too shabby if you ask me.
we keep moving in the right direction.
I think a lot of credit has to go to general CETSVids. he is the rock of Camelot.
they show up because his amazing tennis video center. he is just doing amazing things for Camelot.
and then there is you (lady TT), emma, sara, laurice, and all the others.
we have the coolest and the finest people here.
general masterclass and general Tee are among the best of the best.
and my friend---the great baron of tennis frontier--also is a member here. he too is cool as ice.

World No 1 Rafael Nadal has had new treatment on his troublesome knees which could help him complete a full season on the ATP Tour for the first time since 2011.
The 27-year-old Spaniard also believes that it may prolong his career, but admits the delay in restarting work during the off-season has reduced his chances of regaining the Australian Open title in two weeks.
Although Nadal would not say precisely what had been done to the semi-permanent injuries, he volunteered only that it was "different" and that he is hopeful about a healthier year ahead.
lets still hope he does not overdo it on the hard courts.
if he bags the Australian open and the French open then it is best--in my opinion--to cut back on some of the hard court activity after the u.s. open.
that is just my opinion.
also there is another way to save the knees: improve.
he can return better and he can play a more attacking type of tennis a little better.
he can also make some small/incremental improvements in his serve.

thanks goodness he took him down in straights.
I know it is going to take some time to gather some momentum again.
so every win now is important for rafa.
he will be fine if he can start hitting his backhand with confidence also if he can start returning well.
that usually takes care of a lot of issues for him.
It was a strange match. After winning five games in a row, Rafa went on a walkabout and tripled his errors in the second set. He was hitting it long and wide, it was a mess.
But, Rosol couldn't take advantage. He was pretty inconsistent and sprayed more than this own share of errors.
Anyway, this is the beginning of the year and a time to shore up your game, so I'm not worried about results at this time, just getting re-acclimated to the grind of the tour in these early days is good enough for me.

Rafa has so many different looks. He never looks the same to me.
he is hell of a lot smarter than those idiots at tennis warehouse and MTF give him credit for. we of course know better at Camelot.
he gets the most out what he has been dealt with.
the guy has a bad knee and he has been injured off and on since he was 17.

affirmative general Tee. clay warrior gets the winner of wawa vs ferru match. they will have the advantage of a match under their belt.
it is not going to be easy right away. wawa has huge power off the ground and he can serve in the 130 MPH range.
Ferru is just a warrior who never goes away.
it is going to be a tough contest for the clay warrior.

we continue to make strides in the right direction.
this place is brand spanking new and the tennis season is over.
and still we have added 50 members.
I think 2014 and 2015 hold a great promise for Camelot.
we will continue to learn and we will continue to build for the future.
what will drive this place in about 2 years is engaging content and the cool and flexible features.
and then you add to that the fact that there is staggering amount of freedom here.
Camelot stands at the moment in a class by itself.
our journey is only just beginning.

Daniel Negreanu is has such a radiating personality! I used to watch a lot of WSOP between 2003 and 2006. After that it became way too commercial and overhyped.
On a side note, Rafa has been practicing on hard courts at home, he posted some pictures on Facebook. I can't wait for the Australian Open!
-
all we need is those slams for 2014 and the rest will take care of itself.
all we need is the Australian open and the French open.
he will have more than enough go after more records after that.
;D ;D
-
he is a changed man after 2013.
better ready for some incredible battles in 2014.
we are taking the Australian Open and the French Open.
that is all I care about.
the others can have the other 2 slams.
;D ;D
That's how I feel, too.
I would love to see those trophies in his possession by year's end.

Did Rafael Nadal Make Almost $10 Million For Playing One Week of Tennis In South America?
by Tom Gainey | December 1st, 2013
According to Swiss news agency Blick, Rafael Nadal collected close to $10 million dollars for playing a one week exhibition circuit down in South America last month.
Nadal’s South American series took him to Lima, Peru (v. Ferrer), Chile (v. Djokovic) and Buenos Aires (v. Nalbanian, v. Djokovic).
Nadal’s $10M haul for playing four matches compares very favorably to what he earned by playing in 82 matches and winning 10 titles on the ATP Tour which awarded him just over $14.5M.
Before heading to South America, Nadal also participated in a free exo for Richard Branson in Necker Island.
Last year Federer went down to South America and reportedly returned $12M richer from the trip.

that is what I heard too.
I hear he hardly ever runs out of energy.
guess he is living life to the fullest.
-
probably some kind of kingly crown.
when the hell does this guy sleep? he is somewhere in spain today picking up awards left and right.
I think I read somewhere a while back that he is pretty antsy and always have to be doing something.
I would be dead with a full schedule like that. I like to sit back and chill and live without a schedule.
