Some say this is yet another dark song of ABBA but it's actually about Hitler. Lyrics are included in the video. One of Abba's greatest songs. A hidden gem.

They came from the hills
And they came from the valleys and the plains
They struggled in the cold
In the heat and the snow and in the rain
Came to hear him play
Play their minds away

We're all following a strange melody
We're all summoned by a tune
We're following the piper
And we dance beneath the moon
Sub Luna Saltamus

This is the song that kept Queen's 'We are the Champions' off the number one slot in the UK and stayed there for 4 weeks. One of ABBA's biggest hits.  It was their most complex composition yet.

Oh I should explain why the girls are wearing identical wigs and dresses in the live I Am A Marrionette version. ABBA decided to do a mini musical called The Girl With The Golden Hair when they toured Australia back in 1977. This musical was about a girl who had two personalities - one that enjoyed the stardom and the other that hated it. It's essentially the story of Agnetha, who didn't enjoy being on tour and didn't enjoy the name and fame that came with it. Anni-Frid played the other side of the character that enjoyed it.

Four songs were written for this mini musical. 1. I Am A Marrionette. 2. Get On The Carousel. 3. I Wonder. And 4. Thank You For The Music.

Here's a bit from wiki...

"This "25-minute opus" had a thin storyline about a talented "small-town girl leaving her hometown"[1] on her "quest for stardom", and each song is supposed to represent a different part of her personality. Agnetha and Frida both played the woman, sometimes by themselves and at other times together. They wore matching blonde wigs and costumes "for optimum dramatic effect".[3]"

I could find No. 2. Get On The Carousel on Youtube but not the other two. I am obviously looking for the live version from that '77 concert, because otherwise you will find the other two songs of the studio versions both on youtube and on the studio album called - The Album which is ABBA's one of greatest albums.

Here's some of Get on the Carousel's lyrics followed by the song.

Get on the carousel
Get on
The roundabout is just beginning
Get on
It's fun to see the world spinning

Get on the carousel
(well all I really want to do is get off)
Get on the carousel
(well all I really want to do is get off)
Get on
Your happiness is waiting for you
(it's only making me scared)
Get on
Be famous, let the world adore you
(but I don't really care)

Okay, here's a very underrated song from ABBA. People say it's their darkest song. Though, in this particular song, they were referring to the stardom that had left them being nothing but just puppets of the media and fans, the metallic band Ghost went one step further and made this song an utterly satanic song (lol) when they did the cover.

So anyway, here I have first the original studio version followed by their live version (spectacular!) and then finally, Ghost's cover version.

Killer intro and killer solo guitar in the original studio version.

==========================================================

"You're so free," that's what everybody's telling me
Yet I feel I'm like an outward-bound, pushed around, refugee
Something's wrong, got a feeling that I don't belong
As if I had come from outer space, out of place, like King Kong

I'm a marionette, just a marionette, pull the string
I'm a marionette, everybody's pet, just as long as I sing
I'm a marionette, see my pirouette, round and round
I'm a marionette, I'm a marionette, just a silly old clown

Like a doll, like a puppet with no will at all
And somebody told me how to talk, how to walk, how to fall

Can't complain, I've got no-one but myself to blame
Something's happening I can't control, lost my hold, it's insane!!!

I think it's pretty interesting that ABBA went on to call themselves 'ABBA' taking the first letter of each member's first name (Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny, Anni-Frid) given how Angelic they were (never did drugs or anything of that sort) and how uplifting their songs were. Both in the old and new testaments, Abba means The Father (or in other word, God), and in Islam it's pretty much the same. In fact, us Muslims call our own father (dad) Abba.

I've read countless comments where people have admitted that when the listen to Abba music, their depression goes away. And some doctors now use the beat of SOS song, which has 120 beat per minute, that's ideal for new born babies who need CPR. Here's the bit:

"Research by the Royal Women’s Hospital has revealed that the tune provides the perfect pace for doctors and nurses to deliver CPR to newborn babies. Dr Dawson said babies needed much faster chest compressions than adults, because their heart beat faster naturally at their age."

I read one particular Near Death Experience where this lady went into deep coma eventually died and had this NDE. After she came back and woke up from her coma, she would only listen to ABBA's Dancing Queen all the time, because that's only how she was able to relate to her wonderful experiences that she had while she was 'dead'. And she said it had a positive affect on all the patients in the ER even when it was not allowed to listen to music in the ER. I now know that doctors understand the great influence of music on ill/depressed people (or everyone) and things are changing more and more to comfort patients to the point, where now even in the operation rooms, light uplifting musics are played to keep things calm and positive.  Music relaxes people, keeps things on the lighter side, and keeps the spirits high, positive and alive.

Music producers say Dancing Queen is the perfect blueprint of ideal pop music and should be used that way, it's so amazingly done.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFrGuyw1V8s

Kylie Minogue singing Dancing Queen Live in Sydney 2000 Olympics Closing Ceremony. You could hear how uplifting the song was. ABBA was HUGE in Australia and Kylie was a very big fan of ABBA.

Madonna has done a decent rendition of this ABBA song however it's more commercial than the original one sang by Anni-Frida. Frida has a very deep and warm voice that Madonna can't match or anyone for that matter.  I am posting both with the lyrics. Very beautiful song written and composed by Benny and Bjorn and sung by Anni-Frida.

Long awaited darkness falls
Casting shadows on the walls
In the twilight hour I am alone
Sitting near the fireplace, dying embers warm my face
In this peaceful solitude
All the outside world subdued
Everything comes back to me again
In the gloom
Like an angel passing through my room

Half awake and half in dreams
Seeing long forgotten scenes
So the present runs into the past
Now and then become entwined, playing games within my mind
Like the embers as they die
Love was one prolonged good-bye
And it all comes back to me tonight
In the gloom
Like an angel passing through my room

I close my eyes
And my twilight images go by
All too soon
Like an angel passing through my room

How beautiful were they? How strong and powerful and yet delicate were they vocally, herc? Did you know they had a Spanish teacher who taught them all about the Spanish accent so that they could sing it properly? The harmony is unmatched and will remain that way forever.

It is indeed a very pretty song. I am not an expert on Beatles songs by any means but I do know some of their songs very well.

When I explore any band from the past - a band that I am not very familiar with - the main problem I encounter is that, I can't determine right away which songs are really great. For example, when you listen to any band's greatest hits, you run the risk of missing out truly great songs since they were not very mainstream; therefore, they weren't part of commercial success. The greatest hits or top 10 hits are usually a combination of their most commercially successful songs.

And that means I have to listen to all their songs and not just one time but many times to decide whether I really like the songs or not. I can't instantly dislike a song especially by great bands because a lot of the times, they tend to grow on me and later, I am so shocked to find out how good the songs are. Just don't want to miss out a really great song. I am so into music. It's basically food for my soul!

I discovered Connie Francis and Skeeter Davis only this year. Currently I am exploring the 50s, 60s and the 70s - musicwise so that's where I am right now. ABBA was easy since my dad was a big fan hence I grew up listening to their music. I do feel and believe those are the decades of true music and all the record sales support the facts too. Music today is pure crap especially pop music. I avoid it all. I listen to Rock a lot but I like classics, jazz and the blues quite a bit too.

It is herc darling and I am glad you like it. It's after all one of their very bests. Love how it talks about Gods throwing dice and their minds being as cold as ice. They don't care if someone down here on earth loses someone dear. The Judges will decide if they are going to like her or not while the spectators of the show stay low on the matter. They have no verdict. They don't care. They are only here to watch and enjoy the game. Rules must be obeyed. Game must be on - a lover or a friend? A big thing or a small? The winner takes it all.

Here are a few ABBA tidbits:

- ABBA parted away in 1982. They never announced that they broke up so there was always this anticipation that they might get back together at some point or reunite. But there were no signs of that from the band members. So in 2000, in an attempt to reunite them, they were offered $1 billion ($250 million for each member) along with 10% box office receipts to do concerts around the world for a year. But they turned down the offer saying that they had no intention of reuniting and also, they had enough money and didn't need anymore.

- At one point, they used to hold 1% or 2% of the Swedish economy - I believe from the mid 70s to early 80s. They were richer than Volvo.

- In 1977, over 3.5 MILLION Brits applied for a few thousand tickets to see ABBA in the Albert Hall in London.

- ABBA was HUGE in Australia. In 1977 Australia went into total hysteria by the time ABBA showed up to tour the country because the excitement had been building for months as ABBA songs were played on Australian radio; and ABBA taped several shows to be shown on Australian TV.  People left work early to watch the TV specials.  A special one hour ABBA concert filmed in Stockholm, Sweden and shown on TV stations all around Australia still holds the record to this day in Australia as the most watched TV program of ALL time.  It was watched by more people, and a larger percentage of the Australian population than watched the 1st man land on the moon.

- There's a big ABBA museum in Stockholm, Sweden and another one in Melbourne, Australia. Both were opened because of the Cities' constant requests based on tourists constant demands.

- There are more than 50 ABBA tribute bands in UK alone. There's actually quite a few in the US and Canada as well.  And around the World.

Couple of funky songs by ABBA. Absolutely dig it.

I giggle at the lyrics below - the bolded part. LOL! So cool.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now we can make the jungle out of any old place
We can make gorillas out of people, yeah
Well who can tell a monkey from a monkey?
So people get together, gonna have a good time
Everybody listen to the music, yeah
'Cause what we're gonna sing is kinda funky

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92OC0ubJ4CY

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You move like a flame of fire
Your eyes like a flash of lightning
You lie since you're cold inside
And I'm gonna tame you, wild thing

You'd better watch out
I said you'd better watch out
Watch out
Anywhere you go I'll find you
Watch out

I thought she was too open in her movements and didn't leave anything for imagination. It's not so much the dance but the choreography itself. It's kind a tacky and it ruins the lovely and addictive song. The girl maybe hot to guys but I am not digging her. She's typical and not sweet enough for me. She looks a bit ... ahem bithchy. lol I am very sorry!

Really liked the song, herc. Love Alisha's voice in this type of songs. She could have sang Mehboob Mere just as good come to think of it.

Didn't like the video. Too....whorish for me. It's done tastelessly. It's too out there and the movements aren't subtle at all. In fact, it's too obvious. I prefer covered up, subtle moves and looking innocent while being totally hot.

I must have been a good stripper in one of my past lives though I have no recollection of it. haha

A couple of hot songs by the beautiful Indian lady in the middle of my signature. I believe she's pushing 50 so may not be as beautiful now and I hear she's making a movie with Maryl Streep. Can't wait for that one. You may recognize the actor in both clips however (was in Slumdog Millionaire - Anil Kapoor). Enjoy. One of them has sub-title so it's not going to be too hard to understand. And if you understand Hindi then that's great. :)

Emma!!!

You got me hooked on Bollywood movies!

I had that many years ago too. I love India.. I spent over a year there (3 different travels) My boyfriend thinks India is too dangerous to bring our child.. But I miss India so much. Just love that country..Mother India..Looking forward to that day I can show India to my son!!

I am glad you liked it, Embla. I'll post more but my knowledge is limited and I only tend to listen to quality songs that rich lyrics, great instrument, very well composed etc.

India is a great country. A wealth of knowledge and culture. One of the oldest and greatest countries in the world imo. Very rich on certain accounts. There's a lot to learn from them. I really like China too because of their rich tradition and knowledge.

I am not from India (from Pakistan originally) but obviously, it used to be the same part of one country at some point in history. We used to go for vacation to India and had a lot of fun back then, but it's been really a while. I never found it too or very dangerous but of course, from a developed country's perspective, it could feel that way. For example, I love Mexico but I am very afraid to go there. lol

I know a bit of Shahrukh Khan not much. I have seen this film however since the subject matter is 7 shades of love and the protagonist goes all those stages through different phases of this story. It's not very well done but in parts it has its moments. I love this song because obviously it's a masterpiece by A.R. Rahman and also, it's a very meaningful song. Kind of reminds of me of Shamanic drumming at times.

Be back soon!

How about this one, hmm? I love folk songs. Besides, it's one of A.R.Rahmans. What's more, it's from Lagan, Oscar nominated film and highly critically acclaimed by many. The subject matter is quite deep though it comes in the form of a cricket match. Speaking of which, has baron seen this film given how big a fan he is of cricket?

Some of the greatest songs of Abba, but these are my favourites:

Eagle:

They came flyin' from far away, now I'm under their spell
I love hearing the stories that they tell
They've seen places beyond my land and they've found new horizons
They speak strangely but I understand

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdoSy4ROZpg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdoSy4ROZpg)

One of Us:

I saw myself as a concealed attraction
I felt you kept me away from the heat and the action
Just like a child, stubborn and misconceiving
That's how I started the show
One of us had to go
Now I've changed and I want you to know

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIKAe8Wi0S0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIKAe8Wi0S0)

The Day Before You came:

I must have gone to bed around a quarter after ten
I need a lot of sleep, and so I like to be in bed by then I must have read a while
The latest one by marilyn french or something in that style
It's funny, but I had no sense of living without aim
The day before you came

And turning out the light
I must have yawned and cuddled up for yet another night
And rattling on the roof I must have heard the sound of rain
The day before you came

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSpQkJ_CGMs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSpQkJ_CGMs)

Soldiers:

Do I hear what I think I'm hearing?
Do I see the signs I think I see?
Or is this just a fantasy?
Is it true that the beast is waking
Stirring in his restless sleep tonight
In the pale moonlight
In the grip of this cold December
You and I have reason to remember

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQPuAlVIOv4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQPuAlVIOv4)

The King Has lost His Crown:

Was it hard to step down from your throne
And to know tonight you're all alone
Oh what a shame, you really want that girl
She doesn't care, still you just dream of her

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_QrUc2DlOk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_QrUc2DlOk)

The Winner Takes It All:

But tell me does she kiss
Like I used to kiss you?
Does it feel the same
When she calls your name?
Somewhere deep inside
You must know I miss you
But what can I say
Rules must be obeyed

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyIOl-s7JTU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyIOl-s7JTU)

I'm a Marionette:

You're so free
That's what everybody's telling me
Yet I feel I'm like an outward-bound, pushed around, refugee
Something's wrong, got a feeling that I don't belong
As if I have come from outer space, out of place, like King Kong

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzkkrDYRGSU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzkkrDYRGSU)

The Visitors:

These walls have witnessed all the anguish of humiliation
And seen the hope of freedom glow in shining faces
And now they've come to take me
Come to break me
And yet it isn't unexpected
I have been waiting for these visitors
Help me...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9SFYWkVThg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9SFYWkVThg)

Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!:

Half past twelve
And I'm watching the late show in my flat all alone
How I hate to spend the evening on my own
Autumn winds
Blowing outside the window as I look around the room
And it makes me so depressed to see the gloom
There's not a soul out there
No one to hear my prayer

Gimme gimme gimme a man after midnight
Won't somebody help me chase the shadows away
Gimme gimme gimme a man after midnight
Take me through the darkness to the break of the day

I only listen to English songs and been listening all my life. I like the sound of Spanish music but I don't understand it. I really need to understand the lyrics since that's what attracts me the most about a song. I very much like the sound of Arabic language.

Didn't know you are so into Arabic music, herc! You are right. Music is international that has no barriers. It reaches to everyone's heart regardless. It does not need any specific language because it has its own. Music is the food for the soul after all and there's a reason why most human beings are so into music. I couldn't possibly go a day without music. I'd die!

You should really listen to the first song by Arctic Monkeys. A piece of Heaven.
