Is this picture for real? Where is it? So beautiful.

Hola Nikki, such great pictures. I've only found out. Thanks for taking the time to post those. Too bad you couldn't go to that Church in that island. It looks so beautiful.
Where are you now these days? What are your plans?

Actually this village is the one which is being featured on most of the postcards featuring the Croatian region of Dalmatia. I want to go back there in summer because we only stopped shortly.

I finally made it to one of the many Croatian National Parks which are still left on my bucket list. It was raining when we went there but I really enjoyed
Krka National Park, Croatia. :)
I just didn't get the chance to go on a boat trip to the beautiful monastery which is located on one of the islands on river Krka. Maybe I will go there again in August. Unlike in Plitvice National Park, it is even possible to go for a swim in this national park. I find the idea of swimming under a huge waterfall quite appealing so I think I have not just one but two solid reasons to return when it is warmer. ;)

Jajce, Bosnia
This place is truly amazing. There is a waterfall directly in the city. 30 minutes outside of Jajce there are lovely historical watermills on the lakes which are formed by the river running through Jajce.
The historical center is lovely too. So many fortified buildings, an underground church, old mosques and a castle on top of the hill overlooking the entire city.
It was raining a lot too. Actually I don't know what is the situation there now. Apparently the area was also affecting by last month's floods. :'(

It was quite rainy when I was there. When I finally had gotten used to the idea that the entire day would be a wash-out and that with an umbrella I could at least walk to the nearest shopping mall to spend some time there, the sun finally came out for some hours. Nothing interesting to see apart from Orthodox churches and a fortress which is undergoing a major re-construction at the moment.
-
Croatia is undoubtedly very beautiful and has a lot of character. Loved all the pictures. Looks very historic too. What a gem of a place to visit. Thanks Nikki darling!
This world is just a very beautiful and an unique place; because apart from the negativity in people in general, everything pretty much takes my breath away.

There are really not that many pictures online which show the real beauty of this place. Hahaha.
-
Yes, it's about time for that. Looking forward to it. :)
-
I think I need to post some new pics soon. :D
Since this morning I finally have my old office back and all of a sudden I feel quite happy with my job. Hahaha. Maybe it is all just temporary because it is my first day at work after a bit more than one month. We will see.
-
To be honest, if you (that goes for everyone) don't love your job then all jobs feel that way. I am okay with my job right now but I know in my heart that there's something else out there for me that I'd love doing, so I am kind of on the lookout. Because I am a person of great passion, I can't get into the routine thing in life. I get so bored so. That's the sole reason why my relationships suffer as well because eventually I lose interest and I don't want to go with it anymore. So I've decided to put all that behind me, marriage, relationships, kids etc. stuff and find out what really makes me happy. Anyway, I think that's the key - find out your passion and stick to it as long as you can if it still feels strong. For example, I loved Samrpas and that was more than a decade ago and I noticed that, I still love him just as much, so that was one of my true passion I know. I think it's the same with Andy.
-
I will try to keep my job although it is very tedious. Especially at the moment it is also very stressy with trade fairs coming up.
-
I didn't know you work as a freelancer. That is so cool. You should keep doing what you are doing if you can afford it. No wonder your pictures looks so good.
-
I'm still working as freelancer so I can choose my working hours freely. The more extra hours I work, the more holidays I get. That is quite convenient. I'm looking for a "normal" job though which means as soon as I find one, I will only get between 5-6 weeks of paid holidays each year.
I might go somewhere at the end of February. I still don't know yet where to go. A weekend in Lisbon would be perfect although I would prefer to have a few more days to get to know other places...
-
Costa Rica? Lucky you.
I'm unsure about where to go in March. I had Kosovo, Macedonia and Albania on my mind as "new countries to visit" for this year. Unfortunately I think that it might still be too cold. Then again, I thought it would also be too cold in Bosnia but during some days we didn't even need a jacket to go out. I will simply wait until February and then book a flight.
Portugal is also on my list of places to visit. I haven't been to Lisbon, Sintra and the Algarve coast. I would like to see these places. Maybe Porto as well. I assume that is a better plan for March although anywhere near Bosnia would definitely be a lot better. ;D
In the end I might just spend a week in Portugal and then go back to my dear Balkans. A month is loooong.
My plan is to visit at least 5 countries this year where I haven't been yet. The Balkan countries mentioned above would already be 3 new countries for me. Then maybe Greece and Turkey as well... hahaha. :P
Portugal, Greece, Turkey all sounds very interesting. Love the idea about Macedonia and Albania.
Gawd, I get a month or 4 weeks in total vacation for the whole year. Any more and my company will be looking for me with a flashlight. Can't afford even two weeks in a row. Oh well, will have to make the best out of it I guess and visit 2 'new' countries per year. After I buy my house that is. ;D

Počitelj (BiH) is a really old fortified town with architecture from the Ottoman period and the Middle Ages. Apparently it was built in 1383.
When we walked up to the fortress we saw so many trees with delicious pomegranates. We served ourselves, of course. :P

Hola Nikki. Back from vacation I see. :)
Love that picture btw. So beautiful. I was just reading about the Ottoman period today. Fascinating stuff.
Love pomegranates. Delicious indeed. I eat those all the time. very good for the blood.
When are you taking your next trip?
-
In the end it will be even more than 5. Gonna keep my fingers crossed.
Costa Rica is really not that far away from New Orleans by plane. If I wanted to go there, I would visit some of the surrounding countries as well. Like that the loooong trip would really be worth it for me.
I could not agree more.
I am going to make it happen: either this year or next year for sure.
I need to start planning and line up a few friends as well.
;D ;D ;D ;D

wow. that is impressive. you are going to be able to experience so many different cultures and stuff.
costa rica is very do-able for me as it is only about a 3 hour flight from new Orleans. I have been dreaming about costa rica.
;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Costa Rica?
Then maybe Greece and Turkey as well... hahaha. :P
-
I am going to flood this place with pictures if I go to costa rica this year.
Nikki those falls are absolutely magical.
all of the pictures that you have taken and posted are sensational.
-
I don't have others.
Seems like I need to take the entire month of March off from work (too many extra hours and my boss is refusing to pay me more, haha) so I will try to go on another trip. 8)
-
I also went to the waterfalls of Kravice (BiH) near the Croatian border.

In summer it tends to get very crowded with locals and tourists who want to go for a swim. We had the place all to ourselves when we went there. Really beautiful.
this is magnificent natural landscape.
it is a feast for the eyes.

those pictures and those places are nothing short of sensational.
I am floored. these pictures take your breath away.
awesome stuff Nikkster. keep them coming if you have more.

I also went to Čapljina but there was nothing to see. We just stopped there hoping we found find an open store but unfortunately they close quite early on new year's eve.

Počitelj (BiH) is a really old fortified town with architecture from the Ottoman period and the Middle Ages. Apparently it was built in 1383.
When we walked up to the fortress we saw so many trees with delicious pomegranates. We served ourselves, of course. :P

I was staying near Stolac (BiH).
The city doesn't really have any special sights, just the lovely waterfalls in the city center and a fortress overlooking the entire city. I liked it anyway because I finally got to know what the Bosnian way of life is like in a smaller city (and even a village because where I was staying, there were only 7 or 8 houses and everyone knew everyone).
These are my own pics because most of the pics you can find online don't look so nice.

The streets of Morocco are breathtaking. So much character and so colourful.
Love the pictures from Italy and Amsterdam but not sure if I'd want to live in one of those cities. It has this feeling as if the cities are flooded and the water is stuck forever. lolol

Your exaggeration knows no bound but Nikki will be flattered! Though I am sure she doesn't need it. :)
Is Nikki one of your Facebook friends? And what happened to that lady who was stalking you and calling you darling and everything? lol

That could have turned into a nightmare as well but you must be blessed so I'd rather you be careful. Trust me I've seen things because of the things I tend to watch on TV due to my research purpose, so always better be safe than sorry. Do not ever hitchhike.
I was actually going to ask you next that if you always go with the guided tour or sometimes you go on your own, but your last post answered my question. See, I wouldn't want to go on bus trips either simply because of the reasons you've stated. I'd like to stop and look, enjoy the beauty rather than be on someone else' time and get off and do what we are told. That would take away my real reasons for traveling, so I can totally relate.
And totally agree about having the ideal travel-mate. I like enjoying life and I enjoy food, so I won't mind at all spending money on such things especially while traveling, otherwise i just don't see the point of it.
Traveling alone has got to be the most adventurous and exciting but I've noticed that I tend to draw trouble so that's always a worrisome factor for me.
I always try to steer clear of trouble by preparing my trips the best way possible. I print maps, book everything in advance (sometimes it is not possible and sometimes I also regret having done that because it makes it almost impossible to change your plans in case you find a certain place particularly beautiful and want to stay longer) and make sure I don't stand out too much as a tourist. Hahaha. Fortunately it has worked out for me so far.
too good. I have enjoyed looking at these pictures for the 3rd time now.
;D ::)
Yeah, Dubrovnik has something really special although it is just a museum city and usually packed with tourists.
Nikki this place looks like heaven on earth:

just an amazing landscape.
It really is heaven on earth especially the old town around the bridge.
The rest is nothing too spectacular except for this building:
(https://www.camelotfantasies.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F2.bp.blogspot.com%2F-8ShKx9MWX9o%2FUZpV3FCUI4I%2FAAAAAAAAadE%2FD42cMcFll3I%2Fs640%2FDSC_5917.JPG&hash=8390908269f48f50ae7d7577f65297bd8f70050f)
It is a typical Ottoman-style building with a beautiful garden a bit farther away from the old town.

My friend wanted to kill me when I texted her the license plate of the guy saying: "I'm going on a little road trip with someone. Here's his license plate in case I don't come back". Fortunately everything went just fine. He visited me in October and now I'm going back there. My little adventure seems to have turned into a really good friendship. Hahaha.
Croatia is beautiful indeed. It has so much to offer and there is still so much that I haven't seen yet. I want to return one day with a rental car so that I can stop at all the picturesque places. It sucks when you are travelling by bus and see so many lovely landscapes passing you by without getting the opportunity to get off the bus to take a picture.
I like travelling alone from time to time because it allows me to meet a lot of people who can tell me something about their country or take me to places where I haven't been yet. Obviously I don't always get on strangers' cars in the middle of the night. I prefer walking tours by locals and meeting people in public places. Actually when I was in the Balkans, my friend had to return home for some days (she lives in Croatia but a little more in the North close to the Italian border) and left me alone. I had lots of fun anyway because I could go wherever I wanted without her complaining and asking me to let her sleep a bit longer or spend a bit more time with her on the beach. She is also the only friend that I can actually go on holidays with. Last year I was in Spain with another friend and she was really driving me insane. She wanted to save money so every single day of our 10-days trip we ended up eating spaghetti and tomato sauce for lunch and dinner. Obviously she also didn't want to spend money on public transportation. It was fine with me because I'm used to walking. Unfortunately she wasn't so I basically had to put up with someone complaining day and night about blisters and leg pain. As soon as I got back home, I didn't just go to the Chinese takeaway and bought rice with seafood, I also thought about where to go next because I needed a vacation from my so-called vacation.
Let's see if I can visit many places while I'm in Bosnia. I will just be there for a few days but there are many beautiful villages and national parks close to where my friend lives. I also want to return to Mostar because there are some places which I haven't really seen yet. It was just to hot in summer to walk around for too long.
-
Hola Nikki, you have successfully overwhelmed me with all the brilliant pictures and the short narratives of yours. You are just my kind of traveler. I'd like to explore a great deal rather than go to a resort and spend 7 identical days there in the name of relaxing. And Croatia might still be poor but its beauty is breathtaking. Loved everyone single picture no matter where you went. I did think it was a bit daring of you though to adventure out on your own on your birthday, especially that late at night in a foreign country. It had all the signs of a perfect crime so I am very glad that you'd at realized that while you were out on that night. Gotta be careful next time, girl. This is one of the reasons I can't afford to travel as much because I have no one to travel with me, as all my friends are either married or have boyfriends and they tend to travel on their own. And I am still fairly young so I don't feel it's a great idea for me to travel alone especially when I tend to explore a great deal.
Looking forward to your Bosnia trip.:)

Back in Croatia, we visited Dubrovnik.
This city is just too beautiful for words. It was extremely hot when we arrived but we still couldn't resist climbing up the city walls.

Anyway, that's it from my Balkan trip this summer. ;)
I'm flying back to Dubrovnik soon but I won't have much time to spend there. :-[

I didn't like Budva at all. The old town was charming but nothing special. The other areas of the city had nothing charming at all. Huge and modern hotel complexes next to old buildings from the Communist area. It looked rather odd. Maybe that is why only the Russian tourists seemed to really enjoy it there without complaining that.
Budva is mainly catering to those tourists who are looking for parties which start at 3 pm in the afternoon and don't end until 7 am in the morning. Unfortunately that was nothing for me after 2 weeks of traveling without getting lots of sleep.
Budva impressions...

The beaches near the Old town are too damn dirty. People leave their trash and cigarettes everywhere. Ewwww. They also tend to get crowded very early. At 8 am we were still lucky enough to get a small spot for our towels.

Near Budva you have the hotel and restaurant village of Sveti Stefan. Unfortunately they don't let you go on the island if you don't have a hotel or restaurant reservation. That is why we didn't bother going there.

Perast is a little village in the Bay of Kotor. The main attraction are 2 islands which can be reached by boat from the small harbor in Perast. One of the islands is an artificial one with a beautiful Orthodox church. It can be visited. The other islands also has an old church on it which - as far as I remember - also served as prison. It isn't open to the public.

Next up was my first trip to Montenegro. I visited Kotor in the beautiful Bay of Kotor which is home to Europe's southernmost fjord.
Kotor has so many beautiful narrow cobblestone streets, old churches and houses, fortified city walls and a beautiful small port. If you manage to climb up the countless stairs to the fortress, you are rewarded with a beautiful view of the entire city and the fjord.

After a little change of plans (was supposed to go to Dubrovnik but received a last-minute invitation from a friend of mine to visit him), I ended up in Makarska, Croatia. It is mainly a place for those who are interested in beach holidays and a beautiful coastline.

After a rainy day in Tuzla (more clouds than rain, thankfully) it was time to explore Sarajevo, Bosnia's wonderful capital.

This place is truly magical. I could spend hours walking around there, just enjoying the smell of freshly-made coffee and food and looking at handicrafts.

The next day we were planning on visiting arriving Sarajevo. Unfortunately when we arrived, it was already raining and it seemed like it wouldn't stop anytime soon. The next morning, our host told us that he was going to his native town Tuzla in the North of Bosnia for a few hours. He suggested taking us with him to get to know this city as well. Said and done. After 2,5 hours in the car we were in Tuzla, a rather industrial city.

Upon arriving in Mostar, I decided to explore the city on my own. It was my birthday, already dark outside (around 10 pm or so) and I just wanted to get a first glimpse of the old bridge. Just when I was about to snap a picture, someone approached me from behind saying "Hello". I turned around and saw a guy who was about my age. We chatted a little until he suggested that he would show me a beautiful place. When we went to his car I thought that the "beautiful place" was most likely the place where he would chop off my head and **** me afterwards (yeah, such sickos maybe exist). Fortunately I was wrong. He took me to Blagaj. A historical village on the source of river Buna. They have a Dervish (a Muslim sect as far as I remember) monastery there and a neat restaurant directly by the river where you can enjoy a cold breeze and a refreshing drink to make the summer heat bearable.
I had my first Bosnian lemonade there. The first Bosnian coffee - which is, hands down, the best in the world - came the next morning.

Then it was time to say bye bye to Croatia for a few days. I was nervous about my first trip to Bosnia, the country where East meets West, a country which is - according to my Croatian friends - still traumatized from the horrible war in the 1990's and a country of contrast and contradiction.
Anyway, upon arriving in Mostar I quickly realized how warm and welcoming the people were. You could see that it is a poor country compared to its neighbor Croatia but with a rich culture and lots to offer to tourists who are interested in history and beautiful landscapes.
The famous bridge

"Don't Forget" - You can see these stones everywhere in the city... And it is impossible to forget about the horrible war which killed so many people in Mostar and the rest of Bosnia. The war damage is still present in many parts of the city.

A Croatian guy who we had met wanted to show us a less crowded beach on our last day in Split. So we went to a village called Omiš which is in the East of Split. Afterwards we went back to Split to have a drink. At midnight I had the guys singing me Happy Birthday in Croatian. Hahaha.

Split is touristy and way too expensive for Croatian standards (nothing compared to Dubrovnik though). I loved it though because the Roman monuments were just amazing, the views of the city and the harbor from Marjan hill were amazing and the nightlife was top. Although I partied every night until 5 am, I got to see a lot of the city.
Some of my favorite places...

Next up was Trogir. I was also just passing through on the way from Zadar to Split and had nowhere to leave my luggage when I arrived. That is why I just walked around a bit to get a little glimpse of the charming historic quarter which is built on an island and connected to the "newer" parts of the city by bridges.

On the way from Zadar to Split, I visited Šibenik.
It is a beautiful small city with a stunning cathedral. You can walk up a loooooooooooooot of stairs to get up to a fortress (which was unfortunately closed when I was there) for breathtaking views over the city and the Dalmatian sea.

During my stay in Zadar, we went on a guided tour to Plitvice Lakes National Park.
Normally I hate nothing more than guided tours but unfortunately there are only very few busses running from Zadar to Plitvice and back. That means if we had taken a bus, we would have only had 2 hours or even less in the park. The guided tour allowed us to spend 6 intensive hours in the park. I'm used to walk a lot but after 6 hours in the heat and basically running after the tour guide (who was very eager to show us everything in very little time), I thought I would die. There were 2 girls from Ireland going on the tour with us and one of them was wearing high heels. I wonder how her feet felt at the end of the day. ::)
Well, what's there to see in the park? Waterfalls, crystal clear waters, wildlife, untouched nature. All too beautiful to be true. My own pictures only reflect half of the beauty of the park. I think I was also too amazed by the landscapes so that I didn't take that many good pictures.

In the park itself I didn't see too many wild animals but on the way back home we visited a wildlife sanctuary which gives shelter to bears, deers and wild pigs which are still too young to live in the national park by themselves or which are injured.

Just found out that the bears living in the park are called "European Chocolate bears" (or European brown bears). They are sweet as chocolate indeed. I just wouldn't want to be attacked by one.

Ahhh, I like the idea.
I think I should post some photos of the places I visited this summer.
I started my 2-weeks Balkan trip in Zadar, Croatia.
Church of Saint Donatus

The Sea Organ - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_organ
The music it is playing is quite soothing. I spent the entire day lying in the sun near the sea organ and enjoyed the sea breeze while listening to the music.

Greetings to the sun - http://www.find-croatia.com/zadar/greeting-sun-sea-organ.html
When the sun was going down, I was close to the Greetings to the sun but sadly I missed the spectacle. They say that the sunset in Zadar is the most beautiful one in the world. So I preferred watching the sunset instead and snapping lots of pictures of it with my phone. It was breathtaking indeed. :P

this is Bryce Canyon, Utah.
Utah is a mecca for mountain bikers and I have yet to make it there. I need to plan a trip to this place.
