Rafa's level was up and down at the Australian Open and it cost him.
bad back did not help his cause obviously. he could have fought better in the final but he could not. he did all he could.
its the lack of optimal preparation that cost him in my estimation.
he needs work in some areas in my opinion:
1. he needs better fitness
2. he needs to work on his return of serve
3. and he needs some work on his serve.
he took out roger in straights and he also had no 5 setters going into the final. I believe the lack of optimal fitness led to that back injury.
he is involved in way too may outside activities after the u.s. open. I think that was a factor.
he knew what was at stake at the Australian Open. now he is in a race against time. he will be 29 this year.
I think he let one slip away. he was 12-0 against stan and he just finished beating him in London. this is not the match anybody picked stan to win.
nadal's fitness levels let him down. his fitness levels and his lack of optimal preparation worked against him.
that is my own opinion anyway.

That point was amazing!
94 mph backhand, met with a equally fast forehand.
Beautiful.

Camelot will be the talk of the town in about 2-3 years.
we will continue to learn and continue to build and create content.
it is the coolest and the cleanest tennis forum on the planet already.
sooner or later we will have this place looking just right.
we are doing great so far.

My new desktop.
The colors are going to look fabulous and will allow my icons to show up even more.
Thank you!
Oh yeah!
I did it, and it has The Camelot Elite Society on my computer. Awesome.

I can't agree more, general and Lady TT.
If Rafa stands more than 1-2 meters behind the baseline, he is doomed. Gone are the days when he go back to the fence and return. These balls are too light and quick for him to defend angles from downtown Melbourne.
Unfortunately for him, if he stands too near the baseline, he has to hit the quick ball on the rise and he doesn't have time for his massive topspin swing. His timing and positioning have to be very precise.
So he's sort of damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.
In these conditions, he'll have to take care of his serve first, get about 80% of first serves in, and win at least 70% of them.
Second, he'll have to get the ball back deep and quickly with or without extreme topspin. Short-mid court balls will be a disaster against this Federer.
Third, his forehand down the line and cross court backhand have to be impeccable. He can't spray them like he did against Dimitrov.
Fourth, he'll have to be ready to pass and lob with accuracy and impunity as the Swiss Assassin will be looking to come in and end the point at every good opportunity.
Fifth, he needs to keep his unforced error count down to around 5-10/set and get as many balls back as he can to force Federer to make the errors.
He can do it, but it will be a tall order considering he hasn't played anyone ranked higher than #16 so far. He's not as hardened as Federer and he hasn't played as well. To expect him to play well suddenly, just because it is Federer on the other side of the net might be a lot to ask.
Still, he has a tremendous amount of motivation and as we know, tenacity. So Federer also has to serve very well and can't afford one of his games with a high number of errors or he'll just give the match away. If they both play well at the same time, it should be an interesting match for sure. It hasn't happened lately, but one can always hope.
Respectfully,
masterclass
This is so good.
He has been flubbing too many balls and hitting short. He definitely needs that DTL to be working. Federer is as sharp as a razor blade. If Rafa can put pressure on him though, some factors change quickly.
Even with Murray being rusty and not match tough, Federer had a hard time closing him out. If Murray hadn't gotten tired, cause he was visibly so in that last set, that outcome could have become even more intense.
What Rafa has going for him is that he has played more than Murray and he isn't coming off of a layoff. He knows what he has to do, and he knows the imperial Federer is in.
He's going to have to bring it from the first ball.
I hope it goes Rafa's way, but if he missteps, Federer will be more than ready to pounce. He's full of confidence and a win here would make a huge statement and erase any lingering doubts from 2013.
If Rafa doesn't win this match, Federer will become stronger.

well they both have extra gears general.
now it is just a matter of using those extra gears.
I know nadal is worried about his serve. I am more worried about his return game and his backhand.
if he can return effectively and get the ball back somewhat deep then he can start getting into the points.
another that will allow him to get into the points and stay engaged in the rally is a consistent backhand.
so basically he has to do 2 things well: return well and find some consistency with that backhand.
the rest should start to fall in place.
there is also that decisive mental edge that nadal holds. we have to see if that can have an effect on the way Federer plays.

I expect nadal to be all business now.
he has no choice but to raise his game. the stakes are too high.
he wins if he does this:
1. serve well
2. return well
3. hits his backhand well
4. depth
there needs to be some depth to his shots. that was the biggest problem against dimitrov. he hit too short which allowed to dimitrov to blast those short balls like there was no tomorrow.
-
I lost that picture too. I don't know how it disappeared.
he just to serve better, return better, and hit his backhand better. rest will fall in place.
and he has to stop pushing so many balls back. he does not have the best slice.
it is a defensive shot and they jump on it nearly 100% of the time.
roger will attack. he is not going to hang back and let rafa get into much rhythm. at least that is game plan.
his game plan is to attack, attack, and then attack some more. he wants to take time away from rafa and not give him a chance to gain much rhythm off the ground.
I believe rafa will win in 4 sets tomorrow. nadal knows what is at stake.
all of tennis history is at stake. roger already has the record.
now it is rafa's turn at some history. rafa has to seize this moment. he has no other option.
I guess we worry too much. I had it bad earlier, but then I re-watched the match and Nadal didn't play that bad. Dimitrov was playing out of his shoes, but Rafa playing crappy was still able to contain him. As the match wore on he got better. It's just that we've gotten used to the hard court monster and this tournament he hasn't displayed that, but...
Before this round he's been playing lesser ranked players with nothing to lose. Tomorrow there will be more on the line for both him and Federer. Nadal recognizes the significance of this match which is why I think he's practicing without the tape. He's ready, I'm sure of it.

The picture isn't coming through for me.
That blister was really bumming me out, but I did see on ESPN that he was practicing without it. That's good, because he's going to need to be able to hold his racket better than he was able to in the last few rounds.
At first, I was thinking that Rafa was playing horrible, but now I don't think it was as bad as I previously thought.
Yesterday I was watching it without volume while I was on the phone. Today, I watched it again and noticed that at the business end of the games and sets Rafa was still able to lift his level.
When you consider how important this match is to his legacy I think we'll see a different Nadal.
At least, I hope so.
-
this from the espn site. he ditched the full tape and used this small patch instead on his blood blister during practice today:

This guy was nuts.
He asked me a question and I answered.
Then he kept asking me over and over.
A typical know-it-all who thinks they have the answers for everyone, instead of focusing on their own selves.
I can't stand that. I think a lot of things, but I'm not ignorant enough to go around trying to tell others what they should do.
People need to do themselves more, and then they wouldn't have time to be worrying about others.
You do you and I'll do me.
It seems simple, but few people are able to do.
Anyway, I went over there after I finished my paper and he had calmed down.
Thank goodness.
-
That's the worst I've seen him play in a while.
Everything was off.
Hopefully he can fix things for his next match, or he too will be escorted from the facilities.
Ha ha ha.

TV was in fine form earlier.
There this nut who was carrying on something awful.
You should have seen the font he was using to hurl his insults.
He wouldn't stop, and of course TV toyed with him.
Of course, one came after me and I had to shut him down.
You know how they can get.
I told him that I was reporting him and that was that.
The thread closed down.
Anyway, it was good talking to TV and FOD. I got a lot of laughs.
nobody has any business going after you. they should know their limits.
and you don't go after a lady to begin with.
rafa just won. he got it done in straights but he did not play well at all.
-
I hear ya.
I am watching the Rafa match. he has blisters on his left hand.
he is not playing well at all.

Interesting.
I think he has the movement, but not the strategy. He is instinctual and reactive, but when playing Nadal, Nole, and Murray he is outclassed, because they are thinking several points ahead, at all times.
There was this analogy on TW that that awesome where this guy broke it down. One of the best analogies I've ever seen.
Oh yeah. I was on TW because I needed to get my Thundervolley fix. That man cracks me up. He is so cool.
thundervolley is very cool. I remember him.
we need to get him to join Camelot so he can also post here once in a while.

rafa can play a lot better. I guess that is the bad news for monfils and the rest of the opposition.
this is not his best surface but he is trying to focus and he is trying to give his best shot out there.
also I don't think monfils has the movement to deal with the likes of andy, rafa, and nole in best of 5 sets formats.
-
He was definitely clicking.
Monfils said it was totally different playing him in Doha.
Before the match Monfils had said playing Rafa was going to be "very nice."
It didn't quite turn out that way.
-
I saw the highlights of the match lady TT:
the key for Rafa was 2 things:
1. the return
2. the backhand
if those things are working and clicking for him, he is tough to deal with. the rest pretty much falls in place.
it turns out that those 2 things were clicking. he got 90% of the serves back in the first set. that is simply huge.
he hit his backhand well and that made it possible for him to try to retain the control of the center of the court.
that way he does not have to give up too much court.
-
I am going to catch it tomorrow evening. there is no way I am going to miss that match.
-
That's pretty much how I saw it as well.
Did you get to watch it yet?
I thought Nadal looked fab.

Easy as 1-2-3 for Nadal
Saturday, 18 January, 2014
By Alexandra Willis
Rafa ran him ragged. That's one way of describing Rafael Nadal's neat 6-1 6-2 6-3 victory over Gael Monfils, an encounter that had promised to be a Saturday night gourmet but was more fast food instead, so good was the world No.1.
Monfils had teed up his 12th meeting with the Australian Open 2009 champion by describing it as "very nice" to be facing Nadal. Not exactly words of intent. The flexible Frenchman has the weapons and temperament to play the former champion tough, and he knows it. But, having lost to him two weeks ago in Doha for the ninth time, he also knows that he lacks the concept of what to do when to make that happen.
That is not to say that ‘LaMonf’, as his fan club fondly call him, played badly or with any lack of effort. He catapulted himself after balls as best he could, and even sent down a 214km/h second serve ace to show that he was not to be trifled with.
But Nadal was simply better. While Monfils ran, he ran faster. While Monfils hit, he hit harder. While Monfils roared, he roared loader.
"Tonight I think I played a great match," Nadal said. "Very happy the way that I played against a very tough opponent like Gael. So that makes the level that I played tonight better, because was against tough opponent."
Skipping his way into the fourth round in two hours and four minutes, it was not a wealth of winners that was impressive, just six, five and 10 set-by-set. It was Nadal's relentless consistency everywhere else. Making 90 per cent of returns in set one, and keeping his first serve figures above 65, he executed as if every point were a match point, no quarter given, no easy route taken.
Back- to-back breaks to start things off were the product of Monfils' forehand flying long, followed by a backhand at 5-1 in Nadal's favour. Two breaks came in set No.2 at 3-2 and 5-2, an unforced forehand error and a double fault from the former world No.7 deciding both. And in the third, another forehand error, this time at 4-3.
The Frenchman had six break points, six chances to take the match to Nadal, and on every one, he was left unsatisfied.
His 57 unforced errors didn't help either.
The third set presented the potential to turn things around, Monfils earning two break points at 3-3, the crowd urging him on with allez's and come on's. But Nadal snuffed them out.
"I just keep fighting, that's tennis, that's always tough. My spirit was to keep trying," Monfils said about that third set.
"Definitely today he was in great shape, much better than Doha for sure. Been a while since I play Rafa like that."
Ominous for his opponents, the next of whom is Kei Nishikori, the 16th seed. Nadal has dropped just one set to Nishikori in five meetings, and on Saturday night's showing, looks highly unlikely to add to that number.
"Kei is a great player, he is able to play very aggressive, make very easy the very difficult things,” Nadal said.
“He is very quick on the movements and will be a very tough opponent for me. He is playing great, it will be a tough one. I need to play the way that I played tonight."
In fact, Nadal was unusually complimentary about his level.
"Well, today I think I have to say that I played well from everywhere," Nadal said. "I think I played very well with my forehand. Very good control of the ball. Good winners. Movements were great tonight.
"Backhand very good, I think. If we can add to that, I didn't lose serve during the whole match. That's another good thing.
But, true to form, he remains circumspect about what comes next.
"Just one very good day," Nadal said. "That makes me feel confident, but I am in fourth round. That's all.
"At the end, no one is unstoppable."
Monfils and his other conquered opponents might beg to differ.
-
get ready for the real fireworks.
action is starting to heat up in Melbourne.
-
Yes he did.
I was taping it on ESPN, but I wanted to tape only Rafa's match. Then I remembered that ESPN comes in HD.
Now how did I forget that?
The picture was so much clearer. I called my son in and told him to look at the difference.
He was like, "Ma, you didn't know that?"
I was like, "Nope, I thought something was wrong with my screen and that's why I wasn't viewing programs with a full screen."
LOL, I forget most of the things that I remember.
-
congrats to rafa and his fans.
he ran right over monfils and sent a strong message to the opposition.

affirmative lady TT. that is an excellent post.

Yep, more of his charm and appeal.
Although he is a fierce warrior he seems to know how to compartmentalize his work and his play.
So many people think he is insecure, but I think the opposite. Anyone can act as if they have it all together, but their actions often suggest otherwise.
Only a fool pretends to be perfect, the rest of the world knows that you're not.
