well the backhand was not realiable so it needed more time to get into a bit of a rhythm. he cant beat nole without his backhand firing well.

so that priority #1. he had to make the backhand work a little bit more effectively as it affects everthing. it affects his court positioning. it affects his return of serve.

and it affects his ability to try to control the center of the court which is absolutely crucial against nole.

next he had to move in a little bit closer to the baseline.

thirdly he knew he had to have the DTL forehand working for him so he started going for it. he would miss quite a few but still he made them when he had to.

he would hit 27 forehand winners on this day.

he also started to return a little better.

now toward the end of the match he again started to back up a little bit and again started to run around the backhand too much.

but by then nole was worn down mentally and physically so it worked for rafa.

rafa became a little bit conservative in the end but it worked out.

so the key was better court positioning and more effective forehand and slightly more effective backhand as the match wore on.

his will and his athletic ability did the rest.

it is just a huge mental edge going in this particular battle knowing that you are 5-0 against him there. that provided rafa with some calm and composure which he displayed the whole match.

that calm and composed feeling served him well. he never lost belief and he kept a handle on his nerve.

Thanks so much. You make it sound so simple. Now, I can see it, but I never would've been able to articulate it.

Great points, I did notice Rafa's calm and composure and his use of the DTL. I just love that no matter how many times he's doubted or he loses, he has supreme confidence in himself. If he's confused and can't a solution he'll admit, but he'll also put his hard hat on keep trying.

I was watching his body language and his facial expressions in that battle.

he was not able to capitalize on his opportunities in that first set but his belief and his body language never changed one bit.

so he basically spotted him a set and then proceeded to take his will and his spirit away anyway.

also I think tony is wrong. Rafa would have found a way in the 5th set. he did last year.

sure rafa was cramping but he was managing it. I think nole was getting fatigued and it would have hurt him in the 5th. they even showed nole staggering to his seat at one instance.

bottom line is this: not a good idea to bet against Rafa at a RG final. he wins 100% of those battles.

I was too, and I was so glad to see that. He was focused and knew he could do it. He never got down, pouted, or shrugged. He had made up his mind that he wasn't relinquishing his turf and he made sure he didn't.

What I found so amazing is that although he was cramping, he showed few visible signs of it. He wasn't about to give Nole any hope at all. At one point he stumbled, but righted himself quickly and continued to get his grind on.

This match, in addition to talent, skill, and incredibly high tennis IQs was all about heart. I'll bet Toni showed him some matches where he let Novak in with his doubt. They made sure it didn't happen again.

Of course, Toni was wrong, but also strategic. He has been smart to not let Rafa rest on his laurels. He's always letting him know that there's room for improvement. Many times the top guys get used to everyone lauding them and they begin to think their talent is everything, but you have to understand, that no matter how good you are, things can change.

I think this approach works well for Rafa, he takes in what Toni says, but he's also supremely confident in his own abilities. It's not a bad thing to be warned. It keeps you human.

And, it translates into other parts of his persona. I think that's why he doesn't act like he's a superstar, he respects his opponents, and I don't recall him ever coming out in the press talking about possible opponents in a haphazard way.

There's so much to admire about this guy.

strategy and tactics at 2014 RG final:

http://m.atpworldtour.com/News/Tennis/2014/06/23/Roland-Garros-Brain-Game-Nadal-Djokovic-Final.aspx

Great article, but can you break it down for me.

1. Why did this strategy work? 2. What did he do differently in this match? 3. Did he use the forehand and the down-the-line to wrestle control?

I can see different things sometimes, but I can never analyze it as it pertains to tactics.

A little help from you and masterclass. You guys make it so plain to see and understand.

we are true Rafa fans and we nothing to be ashamed of.

we are normal at least. we don't have a problem with roger, nole, and all the others.

human nature being what it, we all just tend to like and follow some more than others.

I personally care more about clay tennis than anything else on the planet and for that reason my players forever and ever will be:

1. vilas
2. muster
3. kuerten
4. clay warrior (Rafa)
5. bruguera
6. borg

everybody else comes in 2nd. not much I can do about it. I have to be myself and I am not going to change.

Agreed. Nadal is my favorite , but I respect the careers of every person playing on tour. I can't find a reason to "hate" any player. That is so silly.

I don't know why brad gilbert changed his mind but its clear that killer cahill is a biased fool who is being eaten up by the runaway success of Rafa.

Camelot got this right. we said Rafa in straights or 4 sets and that is the way it had to be.

for the record jon wetheim and steve tignor picked Nole to win RG this year.

and the bookies had Nole winning also.

only Camelot had this right. we said Rafa in straights or 4 sets at best.

That figures. But the ESPN experts do a horrendous job of "predicting."

Here's the results:

Evert, Shriver, Ferdnandez, and Drysdale got it right.

ESPN’s “Experts” who got it wrong.

Cahill, Gilbert, P Mac, Bryant, Caple,  Garber, Tandon, and Wilansky all picked Novak

Rafa had to bring the heat in the second set otherwise this match would have been lost.

he fired 17 winners in that 2nd set compared to just 5 in the first set.

he was left with no options: he had to snatch the 2nd set.

Him and Uncle Toni said that. But, it was still amazing to witness it. To see him harness all of his powers to salvage that match was simply breathtaking. I don't know what I will do when that man retires. I can't imagine anyone who can compartmentalize everything the way he does.

Regardless of what's going on, he maintains the same steely composure and sets about completing the task, even if it will end in disappointment. Just a remarkable human being. And he does it with such grace and aplomb.

There is so much to learn from him.

Rafa had 44 winners and 38 unforced errors.

38 unforced errors in just 4 sets is a lot for Rafa but it shows just how good nole can play on clay.

it was a brutal battle. Rafa was not at his very best but he managed to get by.
