I meant to tell masterclass the other day, the day Andy lost to Cilic, was that, I don't actually find Nadal's comeback last year as miraculous. Because first of all, he didn't have a surgery like Andy but more importantly, Nadal was very smart about his schedule. He skipped AO and started out playing in a 250 event on clay far away from rest of the big guys. And mind you, he did lose in the final to a no-namer but what it had essentially done was that, it gave him enough confidence. And since clay is his best surface that happens to come naturally to him, he was able to make the final without too much trouble though he struggled a bit if you guys remember in his earlier rounds there. His next tournament was also a small tournament (Acapulco I believe) and he won that one. So as I see it, he scheduled his return in a way where it would not only build his confidence but also, it wouldn't be much trouble because of the surface and away from the top guys. That was a smart move not a miraculous journey or a comeback.
As to Andy, he should have skipped AO too but he instead got to play onluy 1 small tournament and then he was thrown into the big ocean, so obviously it wasn't a very ideal scenario for him. I don't have regrets but it's understood why one was successful and the other wasn't. Nadal had the whole clay season to play and work on his confidence before making RG, Andy, on the other hand, didn't have that option available to him. He could have avoided AO of course but then again he was the runner up there, so I guess he didn't want to miss the opportunity and too many ranking points.
