A couple of upsets today. Both Berdych and Dimitrov are out. Good win by Janowicz but Dimitrov seems to be out of form lately. Berdy is out of form as well. Maybe they'll pick up come USO.

Oh yes, Tsogna is out too but then again he might be out of it both emotionally and mentally. Good break before the USO I say.

Nole was pushed to 3rd set last night. I was a bit surprised I must say. Of course Simon is a tough opponent for a 2nd round match.

Andy got past Sousa early on today.

Isner, Andy's potential next round opponent, is up a set and on serve on the 2nd. Andy had trouble handling Tsonga's serves so will be interesting to see how he does against Isner. Their matches are typically very close.

Andy had no problem removing Sousa from the facilities.

I need to find the order of play for tomorrow and post it here shortly.

It was an excellent tournament for Roger Federer, who didn't know if he would be able to play after a tough week in Toronto where he lost in the final to Tsonga. He said his body was sore after playing on hard courts the full week late night after late night and then the short turnaround to the day final.  But he said that after the first couple of rounds in Cincinnati, his body finally felt better and the soreness was gone.  That would turn out to be not so good news to Andy Murray, who played well before succumbing again to the eventual winner of the tournament, and remains winless against top 10 players since Wimbledon 2013.  Novak Djokovic had another disappointing effort following Toronto and uncharacteristically lost early to Tommy Robredo.  Rafael Nadal remained on the sidelines trying to recuperate following a practice mishap prior to Toronto.  His status for the US Open is still uncertain.  But in any case, even if the other big guns couldn't make it, the elder statesman did not disappoint.

Federer got to his 8th final of the year, again playing a late night match, this time against big server Milos Raonic that didn't start until about 10:30 pm. But fortunately for him Milos couldn't put many first serves in the court and it only took a bit over an hour to finish the match. So Roger had to come back the next day, only 16+ hours later and play in form David Ferrer.  I thought David played very well.  Federer started well, and was on top of David, putting a lot of pressure on him, and David finally succumbed with a double fault for the break, and Federer took the first set.

But at the start of the second set David stubbornly resisted Federer in a very long service game where Federer had at least 3 break points, but couldn't convert. The next game Federer showed his frustration and seemed a bit tired as well and David broke him for a 2-0 lead. After that it was pretty clear that Federer strategically shortened points to get a second wind and be fresh for the 3rd set.

Federer made sure he won his last service game of the second set so that he would serve first in the decider, and after David won the second set, Roger came out serving very strong and again put pressure on the Ferrer serve.  Once Federer broke, it was pretty much a foregone conclusion, but David hung in there and avoided giving back the bread-stick that he had dished to Federer in the second to hold at 2-4, but after another strong Federer service game to take it to 5-2, David couldn't avoid the final break, and Federer took the match and the tournament.

Congratulations to Roger Federer, his team and fans for a well-earned title. It was a bit unexpected following his final last week, but he pulled it out.  He now has a bit over a week to recover and prepare for the US Open.

Commiserations to David Ferrer, his team and fans. He had a good tournament and should be proud of that.

Respectfully,

General, I revived and updated the Federer 100 titles and 20 slams Quest thread.  Federer has Lendl in his sights. 14 more to go ;)  If he can get to 90, be sure that thread won't need reviving... :)

Too bad he couldn't have won a couple more of those 8 finals he has made so far this year, but it is what it is.  Indian Wells was certainly winnable, losing in the deciding tiebreaker.  He pretty much gifted Hewitt the title in Brisbane, and he made it very close at the end at Wimbledon.

Considering the state of the other top players going into the US Open, I think he has to be one of the favorites to win it, but I don't think it will be that easy. Also, one has to wonder how much longer he can keep this good run of form. One thing that he doesn't want to jeopardize is Switzerland's best chance to win a Davis Cup, with the semifinal against Italy in Geneva coming up right after the US Open. Both he and Wawrinka have naturally made it a priority.

great post general masterclass.

we called it early at camelot as we always do:

we said he was going to be a factor this year as early as when the australian open was in progress. as a matter of fact we even called it in 2013. we said very specifically that he was going to do quite well in 2014.

you are 100% spot on. he could have taken indian wells and also monte carlo.

his confidence and his game is rising.

he is showing the whole world how to stay healthy, fit, and hungry at any age.

Let's make another prediction general. Almost everyone is down this year on Andy Murray right now, even Andy himself from all accounts.

I predict he is going to have a great 2015.

I think this year has not been good for many reasons, but of course recovery from his back surgery was top of the list, probably followed by the departure of Lendl.

He lacked the proper fitness going into the Australian Open, and in retrospect that might have been a mistake to play their so soon.  And since then he has been fighting some fitness and confidence issues, that turned into a vicious cycle.  Losing early, not getting enough match play, especially against the top 6-15 players, and then he would struggle to beat the top 20 players, and all of a sudden have to play Federer, or Rafa, or Djokovic, and had no chance.

But I think he's gradually getting better.  It's a two steps forward and one step back progress though, but it's better than the 1 step forward and 2 steps back that I was seeing earlier.  His Isner win in Cincinnati was excellent. Isner is not easy to beat there.  He's lost to the eventual last two title winners.  But he still has no top 10 wins since Wimbledon last year.  I think that will change, I just don't know when. It could be at the US Open, or in the fall swing and indoors.  But I hope and think it will happen eventually.

I wouldn't be surprised in 2015 if he wins 2 majors as long as he stays healthy.

I missed quite a bit of the Cincy tournament. I didn't see it until the quarters so I was wondering what happened to a lot of the players.
