Ferrer wins Title No 26 in Vienna

Spaniard David Ferrer took a giant stride toward ATP Finals Qualification after emerging from a tough match with Steve Johnson as winner of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna.

“It’s been an unbelievable season, winning five titles and it’s great to be playing well” stated Ferrer in the post match interview.

Johnson, playing in his first ATP final proved to be stern opposition. The American took the first set 6-4 behind a solid serve and aggressive tennis.

There were 3 early breaks in the second set, with Ferrer emerging in the driving seat to hold on and take the match into a deciding set.

The final set saw several momentum swings with both players having opportunities to take a strangehold on the match, but it wasn’t until Ferrer made a crucial breakthrough with a break at 5-5 that the deadlock was broken. He then served out the match to win in 2 hours and 14 minutes and take the title.

Cilic secures the Kremlin

Defending champion Marin Cilic successfully defended his Kremlin Cup title defeating Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 6-4 in 1 hour 28 minutes.

Cilic has now won at least one ATP Tour title for every season dating back to 2008.

The final was a repeat of last years event which also ended in the same scoreline.

“I felt very comfortable and relaxed on the court. Perhaps the victory this year is special in the sense that it is usually more difficult to defend than to win the tournament for the first time.” stated Cilic in a post match interview.

Berdych Reigns Supreme In Stockholm

Tomas Berdych made it a hat-trick of Stockholm Open titles by defeating 23 year old American Jack Sock in Sweden.

The Czech ace prevailed in straight sets 7-6(1), 6-2.

Sock had rolled into Sunday’s final posting impressive victories over Richard Gasquet and Gilles Simon but Berdych was not going to be his third scalp and the top seeded Czech found his form late in first set to win the tie-break in comfortable fashion.

The second set was controlled by Berdych who broke Sock twice en route to clinching his third title in the Swedish capital.

Berdych did not drop a set during his Nordic campaign and will now look ahead to the remainder of the season in a rich vein of form having also won in Shenzhen last month.

Ferrer is on a roll right now... and he's done well to force his way into the ATP Finals final 8.

he (ferru) is pushing 35.

he has no weapons to speak of.

he has little or no leverage in relative terms: average height of a touring pro in the top 100 is 6 foot 2. and inching higher with each passing year.

this just shows what hard work can do for you. he is constantly trying to take his fitness to the next level.

he works hard and stays focused and driven.

He's pulled out of Valencia with an injured elbow.  I think he would have played it, but now he's forced his way into the ATP 8, he's probably concentrating on going in there with a full bill of health.
