Almost Rafa Time. Can't wait. Will be happy for whoever wins, but of course my heart beats for Rafa and to a lesser degree for Tomas too.

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will contest the Sony Open Tennis final for the second time after both received walkovers through the semi-finals on Friday in Miami.

Nadal and Djokovic clashed in the 2011 title match at Crandon Park, with Djokovic prevailing in a third-set tie-break. The pair will meet for the first time this season. Nadal leads their FedEx ATP Head2Head series 22-17, but has lost his past two meetings with Djokovic, losing in the finals in Beijing and at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.

Three-time Miami champion Djokovic is bidding to win the Indian Wells-Miami double for the second time in his career, having beaten Roger Federer in the Californian desert two weeks ago. The Belgrade native lifted the trophy in Miami in 2007, ’11-12.

The 27-year-old Nadal is looking to clinch the elusive Miami crown, having finished runner-up three times previously in 2005 (l. to Federer), 2008 (l. to Davydenko) and 2011.

Djokovic had been due to face Roger Federer’s conqueror, Kei Nishikori, in the semi-finals, but the Japanese player was forced to withdraw with a left groin injury.

Writing on his Facebook page, Nishikori said, “Very sorry to say that I have to pull out today. Very disappointed and I am obviously very sorry for any fans that wanted to come out for this match.

“This tournament is very special to me and look forward to coming back in the years to come. I will work with my medical team to be back healthy as soon as possible.”

Tomas Berdych then pulled out from his scheduled semi-final clash with Nadal due to gastroenteritis. The Czech is set for a return to the Top 5 in the Emirates ATP Rankings on Monday, having beaten Alexandr Dolgopolov in the quarter-finals.

I cant remember ever having seen a development like this one lady TT.

the players needed match play so they lose out but the fans all over the world and the corporate sponsors lose out also.

top players withdrawing hurts the tournament but what can you do.

Agreed. Most bizarre. I've never seen two potential finalists bow out on the same day.

Well, that second one was really hard. I had to lean back and read the screen from a different angle. At first, I thought you were tricking us by not putting a logo in there at all, but on second thought I realized you wouldn't be able to help yourself and had to logoize it.

New word for the Camelotian dictionary.

Logoize-the desire to hide the bull logo in an image search and find exercise. LOL!

Latest news on the pullouts at the Sony Open:

Both Miami Semis Canceled as Berdych Pulls Out

By Chris Oddo | Friday, March 28, 2014
http://www.tennisnow.com/News/Both-Miami-Semis-Canceled-as-Berdych-Pulls-Out.aspx

A strange day just got stranger at the Sony Open in Miami, as Tomas Berdych announced that he'd have to pull out of his evening semifinal with Rafael Nadal due to gastroenteritis. The day's second walkover sends top seed Nadal through to the final, where he will meet second seed Novak Djokovic for the 40th time. Djokovic advanced earlier in the day when Nishikori pulled out with a left groin strain.>>> Nishikori Pulls out of Miami with Groin Injury | Hingis and Lisicki Reach Miami Doubles Final “Came here. Tried to do as much as I could,” said Berdych, who said he started to feel ill in the morning and could barely get out of bed. “You know, see the doctors, receiving the IV, and basically not with good results that I can basically go and try.” “It's an unlucky day for everyone,” Rafael Nadal told Brad Gilbert and Darren Cahill in an on-air interview with ESPN. Tournament director Adam Barrett did his best to put a brave face on, telling media “I ran into Cliff Buchholz, who was the tournament director before me for many, many years. He looked at me and said, 'Adam, that's never happened before. I think you just set a record.' I said, 'Cliff, not a record I want to set.' ” Barrett continued: “Also not publicity that I really want. I mean, we look forward, you know, to the good news, which is we do have the No. 1 and No. 2 players playing two days in a row. I don't know that that's ever happened or when it's happened here. I'm sure it hasn't happened a lot at any tournament, so we have good matchups lined up for the weekend.” “You know, we will try to take care of all of our fans the best that we can. It's not an optimal situation. It's hard to get through a day like this. You do what you can, and you hope for the best. In this case, you know, we have had a lot of great things happen this week, a lot of great actions, a lot of great storylines. Sometimes the storylines, you know, take a turn. “This time they took a turn both in the afternoon and evening sessions.” Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, the top seeds and No. 1 and No. 2-ranked players in the world, are set to face off in a blockbuster final on Sunday. Each, thanks to one of the strangest tennis (non-tennis) days in recent memory, will be well rested. - See more at: http://www.tennisnow.com/News/Both-Miami-Semis-Canceled-as-Berdych-Pulls-Out.aspx#sthash.u3qCEtVh.dpuf

PHOTOS: Rafael Nadal practices with Stefan Kozlov in Miami

Despite an unusual day off, there was no rest for World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, who was back on court working hard.  His hitting partner du jour was 16-year-old US Junior Stefan Kozlov. The 2014 Australian Open junior boys’s finalist describes his experience, in the Miami Herald.
“I came here and tried to pick up a credential and told the woman I’m trying to hit with Rafa,” Kozlov said. “She said, ‘We didn’t get anything about you.’ I gave her my ID because I got my permit [Friday].

“I got here at 1:30 and practice was delayed from 3:15 to 3:45 and I didn’t get let in until 3:35. Toni [Nadal’s uncle and coach] had to come out here and get me. I think that’s one of the toughest hits I’ve ever had in my life,” said Kozlov, who admitted he was nervous at the start of their 45-minute hit. “I’ve heard people talking about his ball, but I didn’t realize it would be like that. If it lands near the baseline, I jumped five feet back and had to really spin it short. It was really physical, and I didn’t realize he was going to hit like that before a match.”
Rafa will play the final against Novak Djokovic in Miami on Sunday. Match time and live streaming information can be found here.

MIAMI (Reuters) - The Sony Open, one of tennis's most prestigious events, was left devastated when both men's semi-finals ended in walkovers on Friday sending world number one Rafa Nadal and number two Novak Djokovic through to the final without hitting a ball.

Three-time champion Djokovic was first gifted a spot in Sunday's final when Japan's Kei Nishikori withdrew with a groin injury.

A few hours later the tournament was rocked again when seventh seeded Czech Tomas Berdych announced he was withdrawing due to gastroenteritis, handing Nadal a free pass.

Thousands of tennis fans had arrived at the Crandon Park complex expecting a day of pulsating action but instead were left with two women's doubles matches.

When it was announced prior to the start of the night session that the Nadal/Berdych match would not be played the stadium erupted in an angry chorus of boos, many showing their disgust by turning and heading for the exits.

"Sorry for Kei. Sorry for Tomas. Sorry for the tournament. Especially sorry for the fans," said Nadal about the double walkover. "It's very unlucky, very unusual for something that can happen.

"I cannot remember that (ever happening)."

That would be because a double walkover in the semi-finals of an ATP Tour event is unprecedented in the professional era.

The walkovers, however, left the Sony Open with a mouth-watering final featuring the world's top two players, Nadal and Djokovic set to clash for the 40th time.

Mar 28, 2014; Miami, FL, USA; Kei Nishikori speaks at a press conference announcing his withdrawal f …

Nadal leads the head-to-head 22-17 but has never lifted the Miami title despite reaching the final three times.

"Only chance to win against Novak is play to the limit, play my best and hope that he is not going to have his best day," said Nadal. "For me, I am going on court and trying my best. (It) doesn't make any difference if it's one tournament or another one.

"For sure, Miami is a very important tournament that I never had the chance to win in the past.

"It is my fourth final. It's positive results. To be able to play four finals in one tournament is because you did well, and I am going to try to be ready for Sunday."

Berdych said that all seemed normal following his quarter-final win over Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov until he woke up Friday morning.

"I just woke up with a pain in my stomach, just went for toilet and got really strong diarrhea," said Berdych. "Since then, it starts to go on and on. More time, diarrhea and then also throwing up and stuff like that.

"I lost so much of the liquid and all the possible energy I could have.

"Came here. Tried to do as much as I could, see the doctors, receiving the IV and basically not with good results."

Nishikori had reached the last four after registering a pair of three-set upsets, defeating Spanish fourth seed David Ferrer in fourth round followed by a quarter-final win over Swiss 17-times grand slam winner Roger Federer.

The Japan number one said that the groin had been bothering him for some time but it flared up against Federer in a match that ran late into an unusually cool evening in south Florida.

Nishikori also retired during the Delray Beach tournament in February for a similar complaint.

"I really felt the last match against Roger, the quarter-final," he said. "It's really sad, of course, semi-final in a big tournament.

"Was really playing well and beating (Grigor) Dimitrov, David (Ferrer) and Roger (Federer). I was really excited to play here.

"But unfortunately I couldn't move side-to-side. Just tried to warm up today, but I couldn't move."

The walkover was the second of the tournament for Djokovic, who had a free pass in the third round when Florian Mayer pulled out with a groin injury.

Djokovic should be well rested for Sunday's final, not having played in four days and contested just three matches the entire tournament.

"It's such a big event, and from a player's perspective, it's never nice to have a walkover to go on to the finals without a fight," said Djokovic. "Now the only thing I can think about is finals and focus on winning the title."
