Well the tennis world is certainly surprised.

No tennis expert was able to predict this exact outcome with these same scores.

These matches were really not all that close from my own vantage point.

how did that happen? I had to take a second look at the nishikori match last night to see how he managed such a huge upset.

same with cilic. how the hell did he hold his nerve and stay so calm and composed.

i saw something on twitter somebody was saying that he is to play an exo with tsonga on the hard courts somewhere.

not sure if it is accurate. lets hope not. he nees to keep an eye on that wrist.

wrist injuries can last forever if not properly taken care of.

he also needs to get off those damn hard courts. one of these days it will be too late.

one can pretty much practice year around on clay and keep their ground game sharp. clay is also easier on the body and the joints.

I saw on FB that he was going to play an exhibition against Tsonga, but now I can't remember if it's confirmed. He also is still saying that he doesn't know when he'll be back since the injury is taking longer than he anticipated. So, I guess we'll see.

I wasn't too surprised TBH. Novak and Kei were 1-1 and Kei did serve Novak a bagel in one of their meetings. Kei is a wonderful player I think. He's beaten Federer, Djokovic, and had Nadal on the ropes in Madrid. He has a good mentality and Novak has been sketchy of late. Too much going on in his personal life and waiting on the  arrival of his baby. So, I wasn't too surprised.

Cilic also impressed me with his focus and determination. The way he mauled Berdych was downright embarrassing. He didn't seem to care about the H2H or anything else. He was on a mission. Then, in the Federer/Monfils (what a joke) match, Federer was playing horribly. Monfils should be ashamed of himself, Fed couldn't even find the court. To go on a walkabout and there's still two more sets to play is ridiculous. Monfils was hitting long and acting like he didn't even care. My last time watching him play anything, he really is a clown and an embarrassment to the sport.

I thought Fed had the wrong tactics in his match with Cilic. I don't know who has told Federer that he has an all court game, but he really needs to stay away from the net. He's starting to look like Roddick coming in on a wing and a prayer. I can't even count how many times he got passed and was nowhere near the ball. If I get a chance I'm going to go back and re watch it so that I can count how many passes Cilic made against him.

Anyway, it will be nice to see two new finalists. I like them both so may the best man win. I suppose as I watch it my heart will begin to palpitate more for one than the other, but right now I can't say who deserves it more. They both do.

Also, I felt bad for Wozniacki, but she really needs to learn how to hit harder. That baffles me, because she's 5"10. I don't understand how someone as small as Camilla Giorgi and Dominika Cibulkova can hit way harder than her. And Serena, being Serena wasn't in a very charitable mood as she was going for history herself.

Caroline started to pick it up towards the end of the match, but it was too late. She is playing more aggressively, so hopefully she'll get to another final against anyone except Serena or Vika once Vika gets her form back.

Happy for Serena, sad for Caroline, but many the Woz can build on this achievement.

Woz is improving again but none of these girls have any answers for Serena.

Serena is just too damn strong and has too big a serve.

Did you catch the mens final today?

Yes, that Serena is amazing. She has too many weapons and a mentality to match it. Hopefully Woz will get a major as she continues to improve, but I'd also like Halep and Jankovic (who I swore off several days ago) to win. It'll probably never happen though as Jelena lacks the killer instinct.

Not really. I wasn't aware of what time it came on and it was too late at night to find it. I thought it was coming on at 3PM and tried to stay but ended up clocking out at 4:45PM. I saw it later on TTC, but fast forwarded through the match because it was looking too one-sided and I prefer competitive matches instead of foregone conclusions.

I am happy for both guys because they both hit important milestones, but it was too much to ask Nishikori to play two tough five-setters, a tough fourth setter against Nole, and then prevail in the final.

Although I do appreciate that although his role was hard he still wanted to win that final and was disappointed in the result. The mark of a champion. He was not happy just to be there.

Agree. Cilic came to play and the composure he displayed was of championship mettle. I wonder where he goes from here. He seems to really believe, which is good to see.

Anyone watching Davis Cup? I'm just fast forwarding through it. I'm not into team sports, that's the beauty of tennis for me; one on one combat.

Anyway, it looks like Berdych is still on walkabout. Stepanek may have enjoyed his last best season; Father Time is coming to get his due.

Looks like Federer may finally get his Davis Cup. I don't see France stopping them. Although, I am surprised at Gasquet's play as of late.

Well, Toni says, "---BREAKING NEWS---

Toni Nadal: "Rafa's backhand is at 80%. He will be ready for Astana, Beijing and Shanghai." I just saw this on Facebook, so I hope it's true.

And let me run this by you.

I'm having a change of heart about Nadal and his injuries. For one, they give him the opportunity to rest, but not only that a chance to recharge. I think these injuries will actually prolong his career, rather than stunt it. The missed time may keep him focused and motivated as he could see the time missed as opportunities lost which will feed his hunger instead of thwart it.

The other thing is that Rafa's career, many times seems to mirror Serena's. Both have been off the tour for significant amounts of time due to illnesses and personal tragedies, but rather than being down and out, they both recharge phenomenally and still have a hunger for the game.

They were wrong about Serena too when they questioned her focus, drive, and determination, and I think they're wrong about Rafa too. Rafa is well aware of his place in the sport and the golden opportunity before him. I believe he will go for the record, or die trying. I think this because of the manner in which he is handling life's curveballs. He doesn't seem perturbed at all at this latest setback, but has taken advantage of the time off, continuing to practice, and poised for another comeback, which he has become quite good at.

i hear ya.

i just saw this on twitter:

Toni Nadal during his interview in Fora de joc on 15/09/2014 also said
 via canal 4 televisió

Translated By Ericka Domenzáin

"Rafa hasn´t played bcs he was not prepared for the Davis Cup this week, butI could also say if he had to play righ now,he wouldn´t be ready either. However he will play on the 25 th in an enhibition match and he will attend Shangai and Pekin as well".

"The way he hurt his wrist was during a training session,it was indeed a bad movement he did and at the beginning we did some xrays and we didn´t think it was going to take his long".

"I wouldn´t say it has been a bad year,he won RG,Madrid,he was on the final at Australia Open. Then he was playing well at the beginning of the American season he had this injury".

"Rafa and all the team still have the willingness of playing and the excitement, regardless all the injuries,we are still willing to participate in more tournaments, and even if he is number 2 or 3 or 22,it doesn´t matter.Rafa goes day by day and he also trains his mind daily".

"He has been in the circuit since 2003 or so,and back then journalists kept saying he was going to have a short career due to his injuries that started very early, abd he always answered he was going to be trying in all the tournaments until he couldn´t do it anymore...that was more than 11 years ago"

"Abt the Davis Cup it is a shame that Spain didn´t make it and we have a lot of good players but it was not enough".

"For caution Rafa doesn't hit yet the 2 handed backhand at full power" "We will leave for Astana on 24 September"
This week he can reach maximum power,he doesn't have anything on the wrist anymore. The exho serves as exercise ".
