Fedal Wars: Federer Admits Nadal Could Catch His Grand Slam Total “Quickly”
by Sean Randall | March 10th, 2015, 4:27 pm

http://www.tennis-x.com/xblog/2015-03-10/18663.php

Thankfully for many of you, it’s been a while since we’ve had a “Fedal Wars” thread. But this recent quote from Roger Federer opened the door. Sorry guys!

Federer, who was in New York for tonight’s exo match against Grigor Dimitrov, admitted yesterday that with a few more French Open titles Rafael Nadal could very well catch his Grand Slam haul of 17.

“If he wins the French Open a few more times and I don’t win any more, then clearly he can catch me very quickly,” Federer said.
And Roger’s right.

At 33, Federer maybe has 1-2 more Slams left in him, most likely at Wimbledon.
If Nadal can stay healthy – a big if! – and motivated, he could easily win 2-3 more French Opens and who knows what else, provided he gets through Novak Djokovic. Rafa will be 29 in a few months so the clock (and his body) is ticking. But he only needs three to catch Roger.

So could he do it? On paper he sure could. But this year I think he’ll have to get two more Slams to have a chance. I just don’t think Rafa can win multiple Majors in his 30s. Not with the issues he’s had with his body.
Luckily for Rafa, I don’t see any of the young guys making a strong push on the clay, so it looks like it will stay Djokovic and Rafa for the next few years. But Djokovic is getting close.

And Roger is still playing good tennis. The guy is still ranked No. 2!
“That’s not why I’m still on tour, just to remind you guys,” Federer quipped of the thought.
“I hope to make it more difficult for them,” he said of Nadal and Djokovic. “But at the end of the day, records are there to be broken.”
Warning: If you don’t want to talk “Fedal”, go somewhere else. In keeping with the spirit of this debate, this is an almost-anything goes thread.

wow. great read lady TT.

thanks for sharing.

we just need RG. the rest will take care of itself.

we just have to stop nole. and we have to keep our king of clay crown for another year.

I don't care about catching roger. I am not thinking about it anymore.

health, fitness, and this RG crown is all I want for Rafa.

I don't care either. These two go down as the best in the history of tennis regardless of the order. The arguments are futile and cannot be proven either way.

Rafa's wins are primarily on clay, so what the tour is made up primarily of hard courts which gives a distinct advantage to the hard court players.

Rafa's body will break down, will that be enough to stop his quest? We don't know that either.

It's been years since I even thought or cared about which was the greatest. I simply like watching Rafa more and I'm sure the Federer fans feel the same way.

Cheers to them both for the best decade of tennis and fight for supremacy we've ever seen from two combatants.

Toni Nadal Worried: ´Winning the French Open Becomes Harder for Rafael Nadal´

Tennis - Toni Nadal is worried for his nephew and protege Rafael Nadal. The 9th time French Open champion could have a hard time keeping his crown this year according to Toni

Rafael Nadal  10 Mar 2015 - 00:26 / by Ivan Pasquariello
http://www.tennisworldusa.org/Toni-Nadal-Worried-Winning-the-French-Open-Becomes-Harder-for-Rafael-Nadal-articolo22856.html

Toni Nadal is worried. The start of the clay season for Rafael Nadal and his entourage allegedly should open the doors to the best part of the year for the Spaniard. Title after title coming in with the declared goal of going double digits at the French Open, reaching a historic 10th title. But Toni is worried, he stays worried even now, that Rafa should be ready to collect his glory in slides and brick, in front of the world, a champion again.
According to Toni, Rafael is not the same as he used to be before:
"I believe it is a mental issue. When someone isn't feeling at his best mentally, that affects all other aspects, including the physic and the movements. What is the cause for this mental problem? Rafa is missing consistency. He has based all his career on constancy and consistency, and now he is missing it. To get back to competition had a price to it, and now we are paying for it" revealed Toni to the Spanish press, on online platform El Confidential.
"The win in Buenos Aires sure worked as a positive motivational boost, but that won't be enough to play at the best in Indian Wells and Miami. We lacked in consistency, and now we are finding it back".
Toni is worried for the disconnections he has seen in his nephew over the past weeks, possibly sings of an initial down curve in form.
"It happened to him in Doha, where he played very well in the first set and then he left the match. In Australia he faced the same issue. He played good matches and then against Berdych he has been a disaster in the first two sets. In Rio the same thing, he stopped playing after the first set. These things started happening frequently most recently and that causes doubts and fears" revealed Toni.
Asked if Rafa is going to go back to be his best version ever, Toni replied:
"The sport isn't stable. Messi isn't the best anymore? He stopped being it, but then he recovered and now he is back in full form and he is the same as always. Now it is Cristiano Ronaldo who is not playing too well. See? Things continuously change and evolve" explained Rafa's uncle and coach.
Will Rafael Nadal win his 10th title at the French Open this year?
"As every year goes by, it is always harder for Rafael to confirm himself at the French Open. Before there were two or three dangerous opponents, now there are at least ten players who could beat him. Last year was even more under threat. We were coming to the tournament after facing some tough losses on the European red clay. Then Rafael came to Paris and played a great tournament" admitted Toni to conclude the interview.

well tony knows best but I have been saying this for a very long time now.

he is just not working hard enough and he often gives up the fight now right in the middle of the match.

it is a fitness issue. he doesn't have his supreme fitness and his massive physicality of the past.

the sport is very demanding for his style of play. he is worn out after 40 minutes of play.

there was no need for this vacation in costa rica when he could have gotten on clay to iron out his ground game and work a little bit on his fitness.

they all played davis cup and trained harder than ever while rafa vacationed in costa rica.

rafa is rafa. he is just going to do things his way.

he has made the sport very hard for himself in the last 2 years.

injuries have played a huge part but that is because he wont work on his fitness like he used to.

uncle tony is worried and so am I.

but there is a way out still:

Rafa has to start spending more time on clay ASAP. I would skip Miami and go after monte carlo.

taking monte carlo puts him on the right track and they start fearing him once again.

it also furnishes Rafa with some confidence instantly.

and then we will need the right breaks at RG.

I want him to enjoy life too, otherwise, he'd still be burnt out. He's only been back a short time, won't it take time for him to get his endurance up?

He cannot be at the same place as Fed, Novak, and Andy. They've been able to pace themselves in combat situations. Rafa hasn't. At least that's what I think.

I think he's playing Miami so, so much for that. Are the two very close together? If so, your plan sounds better, but you know Rafa, he's going to do what he wants. I'm just crossing my fingers and trusting him. What other choice do I have?

BNP PARIBAS OPEN 2015

Big Four Mean Big Drama For Indian Wells Draw

Indian Wells, U.S.A.

by ATP Staff
  | 10.03.2015

Defending champion Novak Djokovic is the top seed in the desert.

With the Big Four of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray claiming the top four seeds at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells for the first time since 2012, the 2015 draw is bound to pack some drama.

Four-time champion Federer and three-time champion Nadal are both in the bottom half, setting the stage for a potential 34th meeting between the two in the semi-finals. Fans could be in for an all-Swiss quarter-final, as Federer is on a crash course to meet countryman Stan Wawrinka. But first, Wawrinka may potentially need to top Tomas Berdych in the fourth round.

Buenos Aires champion Nadal will be back on the California hard courts after losing in last year's third round. He is slated to face No. 5 seed Milos Raonic in the quarter-finals.

In the top half of the draw, defending champion Novak Djokovic is on track to take on a hot David Ferrer in his quarter-final as the Serb attempts to capture his 50th career title. Andy Murray and World No. 5 Kei Nishikori are projected to take the last quarter-final spot.

March Tennis Madness What To Watch For

American John Isner, who reached the semi-finals last year (l. to Djokovic), may meet fellow big-server Kevin Anderson in the third round. If he wins, it could set up a rematch with Djokovic. World No. 11 Grigor Dimitrov and World No. 6 Milos Raonic are set for a potential fourth-round face off.

There are plenty of intriguing matchups to keep an eye on in the early rounds.

In his first tournament since the 2013 Winston-Salem Open, former World No. 7 Mardy Fish will play fellow American Ryan Harrison. The winner will meet Nishikori in the second round. Fish is returning to the tour after an extended absence due to heart issues.

Young Australians Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis will be big draws in the first round as they take on Denis Kudla and Jan-Lennard Struff, respectively. Kyrgios, 19, could be in for a blockbuster second-round match with Dimitrov should he advance.

Bernard Tomic is another Aussie who is looking to continue his strong start to the year, but he'll need to overcome eighth-seeded Ferrer in the third round. The winner of that match may face US Open champion and World No. 10 Marin Cilic, who will be making his debut this season after being sidelined by a shoulder injury.

Main draw play kicks of on Thursday, 12 February.

Indian Wells Men’s Preview: Federer Could Meet Nadal In SFs, Djokovic Seeks 4th Title

by Sean Randall | March 10th, 2015, 7:40 pm

The first Tennis Masters event kicks off Thursday in scenic Indian Wells. But don’t let the blue skies and snow-capped mountains fool you, the tennis is real and it is rough.

The men’s draw was just completed. Let’s get right to it. Here’s what you need to know.

First Quarter
Top seed Novak Djokovic’s tournament defense and quest for a fourth Indian Wells title takes him through a relatively easy road early on. He’ll open against former Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis or the youngster Jiri Vesely who gave Andy Murray fits at Indian Wells last year. Frenchman Julien Benneteau could be next though I think that spot will go to Djokovic’s good buddy Viktor Troikci. Then Kevin Anderson or the struggling John Isner could be tricky before David Ferrer in the quarters.

Ferrer, who’s had some success in the desert, does have Bernard Tomic and Marin Cilic, however, the Croat is making his 2015 debut, so I don’t expect his game to be where it was the last time he played in the US. And even though Tomic is playing well this year, he’s not at Ferrer’s level. So I think David does make it out to Novak, but that will mark the end of his event.
The pick: Novak Djokovic

Second Quarter
Both Andy Murray and Kei Nishikori in the same quarter? Wow. I say that because after Murray’s dismal post-Australian Open, he needed a good draw in Indian Wells where he hasn’t made it to the final weekend this decade! Meanwhile, Nishikori has been red-hot of late winning 10 of his last 11 since the Australian Open, and I think he’s primed for the upset over Murray here.

Both have to be pleased with their draws. Murray’s got a decent path with the up-and-down Vasek Pospisil to start, maybe Philipp Kohlschreiber and then he’s got the failing Ernests Gulbis or Fabio Fognini in the fourth. That’s pretty good! Nishikori also looks good with either Mardy Fish or Ryan Harrison to start, then maybe a pair of Spanish lefties with Fernando Verdasco and then Feliciano Lopez before Murray. And I think Kei wins that.

Also to note is the return of former finalist Fish who meets the improving Harrison in his first singles match in 18 months. Good to see Mardy back playing tennis again.
The pick: Kei Nishikori

Third Quarter
In nine previous appearances, Rafael Nadal has made the SFs eight times, winning the title three of those. That’s not bad for a claycourt guy. But this time Nadal comes in with some confidence issues after a poor showing in Australia. So I think he’ll be tested early but history tells us he’ll get through. Though with Gilles Simon or Richard Gasquet, and Milos Raonic in the later rounds it could get tough.

Raonic has a couple easy early rounds before running into Grigor Dimitrov, Nick Kyrgios or Tommy Robredo. With Kyrgios always injured, Dimitrov struggling, Robredo could sneak through here.
The pick: Rafael Nadal

Fourth Quarter
Swiss teammates and friends Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka both call the fourth quarter their home. And both should be relatively fresh after skipping Davis Cup this past weekend and they’ll need to be because to me this is the toughest quarter. Federer is the favorite having won the title four times and he was a finalist a year ago losing a thriller to Novak. But he’s got a dangerous road starting with Jerzy Janowicz, then a rematch with Andreas Seppi. Roberto Bautista Agut could follow and then the showdown against either Tomas Berdych or Stan Wawrinka.

Both Berdych and Stan have struggled in Indian Wells, and both are playing well this year but since Stan has won the last six with Tomas I’ll take him here. But Stan won’t beat Roger. He could, but he won’t.
The pick:

Semifinals: Djokovic d. Nishikori, Nadal d. Federer.
Novak gets revenge on Kei for the US Open while Nadal, who’s back in form, continues his dominance over Federer.

Final: Djokovic d. Nadal
Novak’s simply the best on hardcourts right now.

Overall, I think the Federer quarter is the toughest while Novak has the easiest section. Murray worries me a little. He just hasn’t looked in sync since Australia, and someone even like a hot-running Pospisil could take him out.

Nadal is really the guy I don’t know. Will he struggle again like Australia or has the extra few weeks on clay given him that needed confidence. But Rafa does play well in the desert and we know he always competes.

And this will be a key event for Federer who is not playing Miami. Was the Australian stumble just that or is the Swiss really on the decline? Janowicz, Seppi and especially Berdych or Stan could get him if he plays like he did in Australia.
