Dimitrov destroyed wawrinka.

Rafa will get the winner of Ferru vs Simon match.

Either way it is the match he needs to keep improving.

Both will make him hit a lot of balls.

Lackadaisical display from Stan. he seemed to be anywhere but on the court.

Federer and Monfils though, were playing ball. Berdych had a little tussle with Bautista-Agut, and Simon has never got back to where he was.

Now Rafa and Ferrer. I hope he can avenge last year's loss.

Why do they keep saying Rafa hasn't won a title in a year, which he has, but they act like he was on tour not winning tournaments. He was off with injury. That is so stupid to me.

I hear ya.

we can avenge the loss and make some progress with the ground game at the same time.

we may not win here as djokovic is just too strong right now but we can take Barcelona and rome.

rafa just needs a few more matches on clay to find his ground game again.

today was not a bad day. he had 32 winners and just 12 unforced errors.

he needs those numbers again but it will be more difficult. ferru is more fit and physical than ever before and he has won 4 tournaments already.

if we can take Barcelona and rome then that sets us up nicely for RG.

I agree with every word of this post. Rafa needs matches and to re-acclimate himself back to the top echelon of tennis. He hasn't played too many and the talent levels are immense along with the pressure to succeed, but I think he is making great strides, considering all of the factors that he's dealing with.

But, I know Rafa, he has the heart of a champion and his present circumstances do not dictate his future. By the time we get to RG, he will be in much better form, as to me, he has improved with every match.

This match with Ferrer will be good for him because it will allow him to groove his ground strokes. Like you said, he still won't be ready for Novak, but I think that may be a good thing, because it will cause Novak to become over confident. that's what usually happens.

But you know what the best thing is, is that Rafa can accept where he is, because he knows what's inside of him. He's never made it a habit of listening to what others say, he depends on himself. That's why he's the champion that he is.

I think he'll get it done today, but he has to improve a lot for Djokovic tomorrow. I'm sure he'll be better tomorrow than he is today, but the thing is by how much? I know not a lot for tomorrow, but this is a new racket. I'm sure that's hard to do when playing on the tour.

Vamossssssssssssssssss.

They said that match was almost three hours. It didn't seem like it to me. But, Rafa got to hit a lot of balls, that was good, but at times David had him running all over the court. It looked like Rafa was trying to hit only forehands and he was missing quite a few DTLs.

I fear Nole will kill him and relish the process. You know how he is, talking out of both sides of his mouth with his faux humility. But if Rafa has to lose, I'd rather he lose to him here, so that he can glean information for future reference.

I hope Nole doesn't do a lot of drop shots tomorrow; that's just a feeling that I have, that and trying to run Rafa ragged around the court.

Still, Rafa has improved since his first match on clay and by the time the French rolls around I think he'll be in a better place.

Berdych and Monfils-who you got?
Rafa and Novak-who you got?

Been watching Judge Judy and people speak so poorly it's wearing on me, LOL.

Rafa was serving for the match at 5-4.

He should have been able to put him away in straights.

Here is the problem:

He is playing too far off the court. And he is returning from the parking lot.

Those returns are too weak now that he has lost some of his usual fitness and his once incredible physicality.

He will have return better and maintain better control of the court tomorrow.

And then he has hit deep off both wings and wait for his opportunities.

If he does lose it is still a win for him:

He will know what he has to improve in order to improve his chances at RG.

Basically the returns are too weak and there is not much sufficient depth and pace on his shots.

A win would be nice for him but you are going to need some help from Djokovic this time.

Djokovic needs to be a little bit off.

Let's see how it plays out.

I will take Rafa in an upset win.

Let's see how the ball rolls tomorrow.

And with the way Monfils is playing one has to go with him.

Rafa is playing with a new racquet. I hope it works out for him.

I agree totally. He was too far back. Even I noticed that, but I don't think he'll play Novak the same way he played David. Although Rafa usually beats Ferrer, he doesn't seem to have the same aggression when he's playing his countrymen.

Tomorrow he'll know he can't slip, so I don't think he'll take things for granted. What's great is that he's excited for this match. That's a good sign. Either way, as you said it's a win-win for Rafa because a few months ago, with the way he was playing he wouldn't have even reached Novak.

It's been a great tournament so far, but I'm too scared to get my hopes up. Let's hope Rafa comes through.

Oh well. Rafa lost as I expected, but he put up a good fight. With the way Novak was playing this week I didn't expect Rafa to get through him. But, he had a lot of fight, which was good. Still, Rafa had problems putting Isner and Ferrer away when both should have been straight set matches.

However, going forward, and with a few more matches under his belt I think he'll be fine.
