Daniel Negreanu praised the humility of our champion: "A lot of times you will have someone who is number one in the world, and they develop an ego," said Negreanu of the top-ranked tennis pro. "He's just very humble despite his success."

Rafa won this PokerStars event and donated his prize to charity, as we see in this article:

http://t.co/QyHZx9sL9s

So true. He acts the same way he acted when he first came on tour. It is amazing to not be able to detect any smugness on his part. He just seems happy to be in the position that he's in, and grateful for all of the love and support.

"It's not the usual enormous ego of a superstar, but it's a superstar cloaked in the spirit of a journeyman. He works as hard as someone trying to get to the top even when he is at the top of the heap."
Just perfect definition by Thetruth.

...And next time I promise I'll warn you TT, so we can enjoy Rafa in PokerStars. ;)

Are you quoting the author, or is this you? Either way, it sums up the situation perfectly.

Thanks, Angel.

What do you think about it? Are you seeing what you want to see?

it is not just my opinion. general masterclass also sees the same thing I see.

even rafa says it himself. he said he doesn't like to hit too many backhands.

you can just watch him in a match or in practice. its a habit that he has developed.

it only takes him a second to start favoring the forehand.

not much can be done at this point. he has 13 majors and counting.

he has the highest winning percentage in the open era. so he makes it work anyway.

even jim courier said some of the same things that we say here.

he leads in many return stats but those stats conceal something too. he has lost some matches his year for example. in those matches there was 4 things that were very obvious:

**stats are averages as you know so what is concealed is that he has not been able to count on his return and his backhand wing in the clutch in those matches that he lost. his backhand was really off and his return was weak against ferru at monte carlo for example. same thing happened against almagro the following week in Barcelona.

**when you are not confident enough with your backhand, it throws off the rest of the game. remember that he is a baseliner so both wings have to be strong and efficient and consistent. you cant play the match with a forehand alone from your backhand corner.

1. backhand was sub par
2. return of serve in general was sub par but even more so off the backhand wing
3. court coverage was sub par. he gives up too much court

4. his fitness has taken a hit

at any rate some of these problems will go away if he can bag another RG crown. he will regain his confidence again.

and for the long run, he just has to work a little harder.

good news is that he has been improving with each week now. he is also looking far more focused. he is finding his rhythm off the ground and the backhand is looking more effective and efficient.

I see an intense and business like look on his face in the matches.

he had this look at the last u.s. open also. so its all good.

he needs a good workout against ferru so this match is just what the doctor ordered. it will do him good.

he has to win it and he will.

All true, and I hope you're right about the last statement. Winning RG.

2014 RG final highlights:

Awesome. I was still able to view it, and I still can't get enough of watching their winners. So strategic and masterful, the two of them.

Rafa's clay statue by Nike:

http://www.tennis-x.com/xblog/2014-06-10/16025.php

The Nadal sculpture will appear in the window of the Cinquième Set store in Paris, accompanied by a plaque that reads: “Legends are made from different stuff”.

This is so ironic. I remember when Nadal first came on the scene, they did everything they could to pit Nadal against Federer. They said Federer was graceful and elegant; Nadal was brutish, like a bull in a china shop. They harped on seconds between serves for the first time in history and attributed it to Nadal being a rulebreaker. They made numerous references to his "quirks," but no one else's on tour. Except Djokovic who they also viewed as a "threat" to the legacy they were building. As Andy progressed, he too was maligned, they called him pouty and made a big deal about anything that they could.

I thought, and still think, that this was one of the stupidest ploys in the history of tennis. For one thing, they had what would become the Big Four, and they should have embraced the different styles and the excellence of their play. That would have been a great way to grow the sport that they "claim" to love.

And now, ten years later, the man they maligned is a legend in the game. Novak too is becoming, or is, a great. But the tactic of division does nothing for tennis. Now that Federer is aging and they still need to drum up interest in the sport, they are lucky that Nadal has played so well, for so long, because these acts could have sabotaged tennis by presenting one as a cheat, and the other one as a saint.

Can you imagine if they had operated in the interest of the sport? Tennis wouldn't be lagging so much in the U.S.

They shot themselves in the foot.

But thankfully, people made their own decisions and all the bad press in the world could not keep Nadal down. I doubt they'll learn their lesson. Obstinate, biased, and ridiculous people.

great post. I agree.

also the French have been pretty brutal to Rafa over the years. now he will own the French forever and ever.

his statues will be all over paris one day as they will use that ploy to lure even more tourists to france.

one day Rafa will have 11 RG crowns. French will surely learn their lesson by then if they have not already.

French davis cup coaches have trashed rafa for years saying things like he is too muscular for tennis and stuff. they said he gives tennis a bad name.

It's not the French people, it's the select few who want to paint the canvas the way they want it to be. I read a ton of articles where they said the French were firmly in Nadal's corner. I think the French have come a long way. Initially, they followed what the "experts" said, but slowly and surely Rafa won them over. It's just the commentators who keep painting a false picture.

It's funny though, because they actually got people to put Nole as the favorite, when statistically the numbers didn't bear that out.

But, I've seen this before. They did the same thing with Pete and Andre. They act like they can only like one player at a time. So immature.
