now I am seriously worried about his back.

I wonder now if it wont be just a blessing if he loses early here and also in Miami.

it will give the back a chance to heal before the grueling clay season begins.

his back is still not right. he said he has doubts about it. yesterday he had 8-9 double faults. he used to average 1-2 double faults a match.

it is far far better to lose in indian wells and also in Miami than to give the RG crown away due to bad back.

Camelot is so relaxing. It's so cool to be able to come here and chat with genuinely nice people, who are not only nice, but knowledgeable as well.

I couldn't have said it better. I'm not concerned about these two tournaments with RG around the corner. It's evident that the back is still troubling him.

#Sad.

I figured the back problems would disappear after starting competition again and being in Rio for a week.

evidently the back issue is still hounding him. he said he did not serve for 10 days after Rio.

this is not good. risk is just staggering at the moment for being on the hard courts. that is what caused the back issue to begin with.

bottom line: I wont feel better until he is in monte carlo now.

got to get off the hard courts asap and go let the back heal.  and also it is best to get on the red clay as soon as possible. clay is a forgiving surface.

it will help the back and the knees.

of course we will cheer for him but I think losing early at indian wells and then again in Miami would be a blessing right now.

I saw that match last night. he looks very shaky and unsure of himself out there. the balls were landing way too short and he could not put much on the return.

that is why a cool place like Camelot is so special.

there is no fooling anybody here. all the people are special and you get to find that out over time.

only those that care will hang around and enjoy Camelot and also be willing to be a part of special Camelot family.

I like to think that we built this Camelot with our own hands so we could have something cool to share with the world.

Surely Lord Clay
At Camelot we can see, breathe, feel and feed us with the truth.
This is a blessing.

Camelot rocks!

We have the very best in the human species!

to this day I have seen no better folks than the ones I have seen at Camelot.

that is the true blessing of Camelot.

that will be the reason why we will have around 300 cool members in 2 years. I am sure of it.

just over little 200 to go now.

So true, CD. I've been on tennis forums for a long time and there is no place like Camelot (aptly named). This is the only place I've encountered where you can actually discuss the that sport you love.

I've gotten spoiled. I can't even think about going you know where, because the posters, the mods, the policies.

Too much drama for me.

I hope that as Camelot grows it's able to maintain the same high quality that we're accustomed to.

I am a little heart sick but what can you do. it is what it is.

I had a feeling this was coming after seeing him nearly lose to 36 year old stepnek the other day.

he should have lost to andujar in rio but escaped.

it is clear the back is affecting his whole game. it is keeping him from doing his thing out there.

and as I have suggested, the hard courts are not helping at the moment. they can make the back worse. especially his back since he has such a demanding style of play. he is taking too much pounding on the hard surface.

I wont feel better now until I see him start training on clay. to hell with Miami masters.

we know he is going. for one thing there is nearly $2 million in appearance fee waiting there for him. they will also send a jet to take him and his team there.

so he is going. but at the current rate, I have to say that I don't mind seeing him lose early and quickly there. I am very worried about the hard courts now. they are not helping his back they are likely to make it a lot worse.

As fans we want it all, don't we?

Before this tournament you and I were in agreement that we didn't  want him to play here, or in Miami.

We thought it wouldn't be good, and it wasn't.

We need Rafa healthy, that's more important than any trophy.

Plus, we know that Rafa is the ultimate phoenix.

He will rise again and this loss will become just another anomaly.

At this stage in Rafa's career, it has to be about the majors.  Roland Garros and his 14th major is the prize, not these relatively insignificant slower hard court masters in the USA.  The late winter and early spring slower hard courts, including the AO, have caused most of his injuries and problems later on. And yet, and yet, he stubbornly keeps playing these even with his two masters exemptions.

My recommendation: Rafa, forget Miami, go back to Manacor and get on the clay and practice 4-6 hours a day on returns and backhands when the back feels better.  Maybe even arrive in Monte-Carlo a week early, get some practice in, and enjoy the view.  I'm sure he could find some adequate players with whom he could practice.  Many players use Monte-Carlo as their base.

Respectfully,

I kind of agree, but I don't think that Rafa plays for the prizes. I think he plays because he feels that he has to. In other words, he plays to feed his own competitive spirit. He understands that tennis is only for a moment in time. And, he's often said that when he hangs his rackets up he'll be fine. I believe that. Even now, he's amazed that he's done as well as he has.

Rafa is paradoxical in many ways. On court he is fierce and relentless, but off court he's happy and smiling. On tour he competes hard, but at home in Mallorca he plays just as hard.

I don't get the sense that he's looking for glory or is trying to make himself a brand or an icon. He plays because it is in his DNA, just like his uncle The Beast of Mallorca. They seem to be extraordinary in their approach to life. Work hard, play hard. Nothing more.

I think this is difficult for many people to understand, but it isn't the prize at the end, it's the journey itself.

another perfect post. its a damn shame that you and I are not on his team. he would be injury free and even richer than he already is in more ways than one.

he keeps leaving slams on the table due to injuries. he could not even play the Australian Open in 2013.

we all know what happened in 2009. he was useless after Rotterdam which we saw coming from 10,000 miles away.

he had played and won more matches on the hard courts in 2008. so something had to give sooner and something did.

he had to finish his match with andy in rotteradam on just one leg.

so he left RG on the table in 2009 and he could not even compete at Wimbledon.

its the hard courts. he has to start backing off. so what does he do? he signs up for the premier league which is on the hard courts.

he said very specifically that he had to make some adjustments and those adjustments related to playing and practicing a little more on the softer/natural surfaces.

look 2013 happened. somehow he made it happen. it was once in a lifetime deal.  that kind of year is not available to more than 3-4 players in the entire history of the sport. now he is still saddled with the knee issues and he has a back issue that wont go away.

so thing to do now is back off the hard courts a little. or quite possibly face extinction. back issues have ended many careers in this sport.

I worried to death about it. he is going to throw away his career that still has 4 good years in it. he can do a lot of damage in those 4 years but he has to start playing and practicing more on clay on year around basis.

Exactly general.  Well it is what it is, right?

Maybe you or some other Rafa fan can tell me, does Uncle Toni have any control or input into which tournaments/exhibitions Rafa plays?
I can't believe he hasn't seen what's going on.  Or does Rafa basically do as he wants at this point?
Is it about money?  Wave the money at him, and he'll play anywhere, anytime?  It's hard for me to believe that, at this point.  He must have hundreds of millions in the bank by now.

his net worth is reputed to be approaching $300 million. Federer is well over $300 million. most likely just north of $500 million. Federer is pulling in well over $71 million a year now. Rafa's 8 RG crowns will bring him $1 billion in the next 30-40 years.

Rafa does has some sponsorship demands but right now he has to make some adjustments. this is the only top athlete on the planet in tennis who has thrown away nearly 2.5 years of his prime years to injuries that could have been prevented.

he and his team simply refuse to make the adjustments to his training and his scheduling. the result of that is that something has to give.

he is just one man. he has been a dominating athlete in the sport for a decade now. that is very hard to do. even for a superman.
