I don't think Rafa should concentrate on the #1 ranking. Rankings and stats are fine, but to me they're secondary to a player's entire career. Plus, you can't win everything, so you have to accept what is a very exciting and prosperous career.

Sometimes as fans we want more for our player than is humanly possible, but I just want to support Rafa as long as he plays. If he quits tomorrow I will be eternally grateful for the high caliber matches I've been able to enjoy.

great post. that is well said.

and we will have his matches forever and ever at Camelot.

I can also tell you this: his best is yet to come.

he is going to show the world something they have never seen before.

and I steal that line from the movie "gladiator"

that is also rafa's favorite movie.

he is going to show the world 2 more RG crowns. he is the ultimate gladiator of the sport. his work is far from done.

we will support Rafa forever at Camelot. even long after he has exited the sport Rafa is and will be our warrior.

it is what it is. that is just how I feel anyway.

these are my players forever and nothing in the world can ever change this:

1. vilas
2. muster
3. Rafa
4. Andy Murray

That's how I feel too. I think the accolades are nice, but not necessary. It's the caliber of the player that hooks me. And once I like someone, it takes a lot for me to turn my back on them.

Here's my all time players:

1. Rafa
2. Pete
3. Serena
4. Andy

All of them possess traits that I would like to emulate in my own life. Hence, my fandom.

Definitely. I have learned so much about tennis from you and him. This is what I've always wanted as a tennis fan, to be educated on the actual sport. This place is beyond awesome, due to its quality of information, and the ability to have reasonable and intelligent discourse.

Agreed, I don't feel down or exasperated about where he is. I believe that everything happens for a reason. Rafa is a blessed individual, so things will work out for his best interests. His parents have done a bang up raising him, because he is more than a tennis player, he is an inspiration and a reminder of the benefits of hard work and desire.

These are traits that I want for my son, who wants to become a performer. As scary as it is as a parent, I have to help him follow his dream to the best of my ability. He's a great guy. One of the most pleasant people I have ever met. I am very proud of him, based on his character. That's what is most important to me, character, because that trait cannot be created, it has to be natural.

But, I digress...

Here's an article that made me feel better about where Rafa is:

INTERNAZIONALI BNL D'ITALIA

Nadal 'Encouraged' By Clay Performance
by ATP Staff 18.05.2014

http://www.atpworldtour.com/News/Tennis/2014/05/20/Rome-Final-Nadal-Reaction.aspx

Rafael Nadal has lost four consecutive battles against Novak Djokovic, including Sunday's Rome final.
Rafael Nadal spoke positively about his chances of winning a ninth Roland Garros title despite a fourth consecutive defeat to Novak Djokovic in Sunday’s Internazionali BNL d'Italia final.

“Two weeks ago, my chances to play well in Roland Garros were not very high,” said Nadal. “But I will arrive now more encouraged.”

The 27 year old’s European clay season began meekly, with the Spaniard making quarter-final exits in Monte-Carlo (l. to Ferrer) and Barcelona (l. to Almagro).
Nadal followed that up with a title win at the Mutua Madrid Open - his fourth in the Spanish capital - and Sunday’s runner-up finish at the Foro Italico.

“I’m very proud about this week,” Nadal said. “I earned 600 [Emirates ATP Rankings] points. I was able to play in another final here. I was able to compete well against Novak, probably one of the best players of the moment. I was able to play well against tough opponents like Andy Murray and Grigor Dimitrov.
“My feelings [about Roland Garros] are better now than one week ago. Each week of the clay season got better for me. I hope to be ready.”

Good day general hercules, Lady TT, and the rest.  Just about to have dinner. :)

RG draw in less than 3 days... :)

Anybody heard about Nishikori?  Is he going to play? If he is back to being healthy, he is a threat to upset almost anyone if he can get it done quickly.

Respectfully,
masterclass

Thank you general and Lady TT.  Hopefully, I am still improving.  I have to admit I'm still a bit biased towards commenting and critiquing the great tennis players, because they have played great tennis more than the rest, and I am an unabashed fan of great tennis as shown by my Legends signature image.  :)

But when someone points  out that a non-top player played a great tennis match that I didn't see, I generally try to watch it, if it is available on a video clip.  So thanks to general CETSVids for those opportunities, even though I notice that Youtube has been removing videos at an alarming rate lately.  Have to catch them quickly.

Respectfully,
masterclass

hate is just a wasted emotion that serves no constructive purpose.

we just happen to like some players more for various reasons.

Exactly. I don't know why people waste so much energy with it. I find it easier to stew for a minute, get over it, and put it behind me. I need to laugh and enjoy life, I don't have time for that kind of stuff.

I concur.  I expect people to celebrate their own player's victories, accomplishments, commiserate about their losses, etc. , what I would call normal fans.

But there are so many that can't just do that.   I'm not sure what causes people to "dislike or hate" other players.  One may not like a player's particular style of play, or maybe certain mannerisms, or even actions on the court, but it so often goes beyond that.  They probably don't know them personally, and only see exterior glimpses, and don't know the context of what has been said or done in relation to their statements and actions.   For some, they must be derogatory or hateful toward another player or players, and fans of those players, sometimes in an apparent effort to elevate their own, or sometimes just to knock down the other.   It usually happens in the comparison type of threads, or in a match thread.

It's probably unavoidable that fans of one might elevate or emphasize some accomplishments of their players to an extent, while diminishing the other player or players to an extent, but then it usually unfortunately becomes a slippery slope towards the ugly comments.   As time has passed, I have found it best not to attempt to discuss things with those types of people, as those discussions inevitably lead toward ill will, attacks and counter attacks.   I do feel I have to call out people sometimes when they make factual errors or draw "questionable" conclusions based on a selection of either dubious or selective facts.  But once I've done that, I don't argue about it. It's not worth it.  And many times I just don't bother.

I prefer to make my comments, concentrate on the relevant facts in a match or discussion, point out the good things the players have done, perhaps criticize what I see as some deficiencies of each player and try to do it in a manner that is productive rather than negative.   I generally prefer to post in analysis threads.

Sometimes I have fun with prediction threads, realizing that those are by their nature the most uncertain of all; nobody is going to predict correctly all of the time.  If you can do better than 50% than that is good.  And I've found that some can predict almost equally well, whether based on a feeling or on interpretation of historical events.  What I don't like is the people who have the nerve to deride various predictions and make fun of the people that make them either before or after (especially annoying), when they often lack the courage to predict themselves and put their opinions on the line.

Occasionally, I will start a "joke" thread, which may intentionally poke fun at  certain players, but it's meant to be all in good fun, not hateful by any means, though some people invariably will read into it otherwise.  So I tend not to start many threads of that type and I try not to focus only on one player, though admittedly the top players are most often the subjects. :)

Thanks general.  I might have to do some shuffling around of images in the next couple of years, depending on Novak Djokovic's future success.  He is the next potential addition and not too far from it.

Well, I guess we have different opinions about that one general hercules.  Can't agree on everything, right?  ;D ;D ;D

For me, he is currently about the same tier level as John Newcombe, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg, and Mats Wilander, just a step below the all time great players.

But his career is not done yet, so he can still rise.  1 or 2 more majors should do it for me.  Doesn't need to win at Roland Garros, but it wouldn't hurt.  If not, I'd like to see him at least win Wimbledon or the US Open again.  I think another Australian Open won't do it for me.

I hear ya general masterclass.

when considering what nole is up against, he has done quite well. he has had to deal with Federer, rafa, and andy murray.

that is big time competition.

as for RG, I don't think it will happen this time for nole. rafa will use those 4 losses in a row to be properly motivated and properly focused to deal with nole at RG.

also this is the last card rafa has left to play: he loses the king of clay title to as well as his #1 rank both at the same time if he allows nole to win in paris.

finally betting against rafa at a RG final is just a bad bet.  rafa has to try to hold on to his conquered territory and I believe he will. it is his last stronghold.

he will not allow the final to go beyond 4 sets if he faces nole in the final. that is how I am seeing it.
