I really don't mind Federer. I think he's truly a great player. I enjoy his matches - win or loss. And I don't think at all he is responsible for this cult like fanbase. It's the ordinary minded people who have the tendency to become all obsessed with celebrities/players for no good reason. I see it as an escapism. People don't like their own reality so they subscribe to those that aren't their own reality. It's a very nice escape for them.
Baron, for example, is really a level headed person but he too I feel is a bit too protective about Federer. I have a really good friend who's a big Federer friend but his obsession over Federer I find really unhealthy. There are also some serious Fedal fanatics out there.
i have known some major fed fanatics in my time. even the most objective ones can be major closet fed fanatics.
just look at masterclass. not a word about congratulating nadal, his team, his family, and his fans when he captured the Australian open.
instead his first and initial response: he ran to tennis frontier and said something to the following effect:
nadal will never win a slam off clay again. the next knee injury is almost here. and then he added something about poker or something. he said he will be back to playing golf and poker in no time flat after he destroy his knees.
this is minutes after nadal won the Australian open.
that was a bitter thing to say. now you know that time does not stand still. people are going to come and they are going to go. records will continue to be broken.
now i know masterclass is a smart and an objective fellow but fed is a religion to many of these people. it is what it is.
it really does not matter to me. i am enjoying it all.
