Do people get gifts on their birthday from their bosses?
I wouldn't think so as a matter of course. From experience, you're more likely to get something like that or lunch thrown in, if it's a pretty tight, small and familiar team. Not something I would expect though - just a bonus should it happen.
Actually you are kind of spot on re: small and familiar team. We are a small team (8 people only in our team) and we know each other very well and they did throw a small surprise birthday party for me, which I'd pretty much expected. But there was also an expensive gift card from my boss and that had kind of puzzled me for a while. It's just not like her and that was the problem. I couldn't even squeeze out a 20 dollar bill from her for my Holiday Hamper program if you know what I mean. Anyway, later I realized that she had misunderstood me in some work related stuff not so long ago and then felt sorry about it. This has got to be something to do with that.
We get our formal bonus review at year end anyway so it has nothing to do with that. Another thing is that, no matter how close we are with each other, there's a limit to gift giving as well (specific rules set up by our Company and we get lectured by it every now and then) and she has gone over the line, so now I have to treat it as a personal gift. I am not comfortable with it frankly, so I've decided to give it away to some homeless person. Only my family and close friends are entitled to give my gifts otherwise it feels like as if people are trying to buy me.
