emma how would Federer have fared against peak Sampras on grass?

I was just looking at the video you posted. I see damn near no weakness in pete's game.

I'd give Sampras the edge on grass of course. Sampras was mentally very tough and that makes a huge difference as Federer too doesn't have too many flaws in his game.

On hard, since Nadal was pretty dominant over Federer because of the mental issues, I'd give Sampras the edge there as well. Pete won 5 USO and made the finals 3 times. Couldn't play one time because he had a back injury that made him pull out of the USO just a week or two before and he was the hottest player at the time and was a clear favourite going into the USO.

He was also pretty dominant on carpet as well, a surface that disappeared altogether in this era. 5 tour finals to be very proud of.

Federer has a very good serve but Pete's clearly far too dominant. I just don't see a prime Federer breaking a prime Sampras' serve at all. Most times that would be the deciding factor along with the mental side of things. Sampras loved a challenge and it didn't matter who it came from. You could never argue that a certain player put Sampras in place or that he was quite weak against him, because that was never the case with him.
