Hi all,

Generally speaking, I'm thinking the tour misses Murray, much as it missed Nadal, before his incredible return.  Hopefully he plays at the Australian Open.  I guess some of his preps will tell him for sure if he is ready to go.

Nadal has scheduled so many exhos and such.  I guess his knees must be in great shape after his triumphant 2013 season.  I only hope that we are not in for a repeat of 2008-2009.  It sort of smells like it to me.  But who knows?

The main story lines for me this year are:

1. Can Rafa pick up where he left off and how long will he be able to continue before something gives?  He is only one man.
Will he continue to play in hard court tournaments everywhere, or stick mostly to the clay? I hope after the Australian Open he either goes to South/Central America or takes a rest.  I don't want to see him in Rotterdam and Dubai.

2. How will Murray be after the surgery and the time off?  How much time will it take him to get back to his best form after 3.5 months out of action?

3. Will Spartan Stan continue to improve, or have we seen his best?

4. Which younger players will step up and start to consistently make it to the bigger tournament semis and finals? Dimitrov, Janowicz, Raonic, or someone else?  Pablo Carreño  improved from #654 to #65 last year.  Maybe we will see another jump up for him toward the top 30 where he can be seeded for majors?

5. How well will Federer do this year after his working vacation of last year?  Will his back hold up to the heavier schedule he has mentioned for this year? At which majors will be a significant factor (semis or better)?  Any?

6. Will Djokovic continue his consistent play of the last couple of years?  Will he be able to win a major outside of Australia this year?

7. Juan Martin Del Potro is #5 in the world, David Ferrer is #3.  Will they switch places this year?

I'll give you my opinions after I hear what others have to say... :)

Respectfully,
masterclass

that is an incredible post general masterclass. I had to quote it so nobody misses it.

2014 is going to be the most exciting year of our times in the sport of tennis. so many questions need to be answered and they will get answered in 2014.

I am eagerly waiting for andy to return to the battlefield. looks like we will see him next on December 26th in abu dhabi.

as for nadal and all his exos on the hard courts, I can only think of a couple of things:

1. greed
2. he has his eyes set on the Australian Open title so he wants to keep playing and keep hitting the ball.

heavy topspin players have to hit constantly otherwise they lose their timing. timing can disappear in a week or less than a week.

nole`s level is unbelievably high at the moment. he has won 24 matches in a row. I am not sure he can maintain that level for all of next year.

the sport is far more brutal today than at any time in the past.

del potro and Spartan stan have to keep working hard if they want take it to the next level. I am impressed their progress in 2013 but their work is far from done.

I am also expecting a fairly strong return from Federer in 2014. he still has a big game. all that is missing is some consistency and fitness.

I think he should also start playing more doubles. it will help him in the long run.

note that doubles cant help everybody. it does not help nadal for instance. he plays his doubles from the baseline.

Spot on general.

What about the young guns I mentioned?  Do you see any chance for them to break through and take something this year, or will it take another couple of years?

I know Janowicz made it to the Wimbledon semi  last year before the eventual winner, Andy Murray, stopped him, but both Nadal and Federer were extricated from the premises very early, which helped open the door for him.  After that, Janowicz's back got hurt in the US Open and he had to stop playing for awhile.  None of the other young players has advanced that far in the majors.  They all have to improve on a few levels to seriously challenge the top players at this point.

Respectfully,
masterclass

I think jerzy has the highest potential of any young guns out there general masterclass.

next would dynamitrov ( a nickname developed by general Javier the fearless).

and then we have the youngster from Australia: nick kyrgios.

I think he is going places.

does the public buy the Bernard tomic stock right now? what is his true potential?

I posted the semifinal and the gold medal match fro Beijing Olympics (2008).

nadal sort of went away and played too defensive in the 2nd set against nole.  nole capitalized on that and starting hitting out with greater freedom.

he pretty much ran away with the 2nd set. 3rd set was fascinating.

our collection of amazing, memorable matches is starting to look incredible thanks to all the hard work of CETSVids.

Great post, masterclass :) Here is my opinion on your main points:

1. I am not very happy that Rafa has decided to play Doha next year. I believe the Abu Dhabi exho and the early rounds at the Australian Open will give him enough play practice to attack the title. After that I think he is going to play in South America before going to the American slow hardcourts.

2. Murray just started practicing for the first time since the injury the other day so I don't think he will be one of the favorites in Australia. I am , too, curious to see his form. Moreover, the Davis Cup tie USA - Great Britain is in San Diego (on clay !!!) and I am planning on attending each day. Hopefully Murray travels with the team and plays :)

3. Stan lost a heart breaker in Australia against Nole this year, he played amazing tennis and I expect him to repeat, if not better, that performance next year.

4. Since I am a big fan of Dimitrov, I expect 2014 to be his breakthrough year. Realistically, he can enter the Top 20 around the clay season but I will not be surprised if he gets even higher. His fitness has improved, so has his confidence after beating Nole this year and winning his first ATP title. I also expect Jerzy to win a title and reach Top 10, he has great potential but needs to stay healthy. Big guys tend to get injured more often.

5. After one of his worst years Federer will bounce back in my opinion. Australian Open - Rotterdam - Dubai give him a great chance to record some wins and win a title. We will see if his back problems persist, though. Agassi at that age was starting to have significant problems with his back.

6. Dokovic will undoubtedly be the favorite in Australia and the following hardcourt tournaments. But I have a gut feeling that he won't be able to defend his Australian Open crown.

7. David Ferrer is getting old (I know how unbelievable this sounds) and I expect him to decline this year. Moreover, he has a lot of points to defend so I do not expect him to keep his #3 position for too long.

I personally think Andy's back injury is being either overestimated or underestimated by fans given their respective perspectives on the matter. And I don't mean masterclass by that. I think he's asking the right questions. Since we have no idea to what extent Murray's back injury was therefore, the surgery, we can only speculate so much.

As to young guns, I think both Dimitrov and Janowicz have done well considering but I believe it's Dimitrov who's going to take things to next level. JJ still has a bit of process to go through. He still hasn't been exposed to everything. There are still many missing elements as far as the whole picture is concerned. Raonic is already there so he might just become one of the main contenders at the Slams. He's been exposed considerably and has the right kind of experience by now.

Nole, I believe, will keep his consistency alive and will keep his stakes high as usual. I also believe he'll be very hungry for AO given that he'd been denied 3 Slams since last AO. He is and will be the man to beat.

Nadal, I feel, will have to rely on a good draw to make the AO final. It will be interesting to see how he feels after the long season this year. Fitness therefore confidence is the key to his winning streak.

Del Potro should take over Ferrer and should be able to do more than he does next year and same can be applied to Stan. I will throw Berdych in this mix as well. He didn't have a very good year this year but that can always change.

Federer, of course, is the dark horse. He had a really bad year this year but that is to be expected at this stage. Now that he is without a coach, it will be interesting to see how much can he hold on his own going forward. Even a new coach won't be as promising as the problem is not with the coach but Federer himself.

The likes of Del Potro, Stan, Berdych can only push Nole at Majors but at the end of the day, Nole will pull it off as he's the better player. You will be hard pressed if you believe any of these players will be able to do this when Nole is in his prime.

my 3 breakout stars for 2014 are dimitrov, jerzy, and nick kyrgios.

del potro and Spartan stan are rock solid players now and they will continue to do well. I think they found their level for now.
del potro may show a little greater potential than Spartan stan because of his superior, more consistent ground game.

now its all about the next breakout star. I have a feeling that all 3 that I have listed above will find a way to make some noise in 2014. these 3 have the size and the easy power off the ground. they have the big serves too. with better coaching and improved fitness they could make a few waves.

jury is out on ferru. he never gets old and he never gets tired. I thought he was worn out in 2012 after he took home 7 titles.

then he comes right back in 2013 and makes the final at RG. he also made the final 8 at London.

if I was a betting man, I say don't count out ferru. he may find a way to finish among the top players again in 2014.

the man must be a fitness fanatic.

the great bjorn borg center is up and running finally.

feel free to start a conversation on borg anytime you please.

are there any other players that you have in mind?

I know we are small right now but we wont be in a year or so.

so we can expect a few more folks here by the end of next year. these things simply take some time.

individual pro player center will do better with more folks around quite obviously. we will get there eventually.

as for nadal and all his exos on the hard courts, I can only think of a couple of things:

1. greed
2. he has his eyes set on the Australian Open title so he wants to keep playing and keep hitting the ball.

i am not following you. what happened? is clarky around?

as for the exos, i guess he knows he has to take it easy now pretty much. you know i am constantly worried about the knees.

by the way how are you liking the new changes: we are simpler and more elegant now.

and God will always occupy the highest possible position at Camelot from now on. that is the way it has to be Camelot.

we are going to set an awesome example to the sporting world.

Clarky was always lamenting the fact that Rafa overplayed based on greed.

No, Clarky isn't around. You know she likes to spend her time crushing people's spirits at the other place.

I saw the new Rafa pictures. Thanks.
