I'll add congratulations to the German team and condolences to the Spanish team.

Kohlschreiber looked healthy and ready and beat Bautista-Agut easily in 3 sets, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2, and he certainly made use of the backhand as I suggested earlier.  Here was the hot shot of the day.

The 2nd match between Mayer and Lopez turned out to be a big battle as I thought it might.
Mayer led 2 sets to love, but Lopez fought back to tie it.  Then in the final set, Mayer broke early and never relinquished it, winning, 7-6(6), 7-6(4), 1-6, 5-7, 6-3.  Mayer was cramping, but fought through and pulled it out.

Here's the final game (starting at around 2:20) :

Now Fernando Verdasco and David Marrero are scheduled in doubles to try and prevent victory for the Germans, represented in the doubles by Tommy Haas and Daniel Brands.

Tough ask for Spain without world #1 Nadal and #5 Ferrer, or numbers 16 and 17, Robredo and Almagro.  Not sure why they are not playing.

Respectfully,
masterclass

Great recap.

Kohly's backhand is sweet. I've always liked him.

Shame for Spain. Sounds like a great match, but Feli always waits too late to fight. I can't see them getting past Haas and Brands. By the way, did you see where Haas just got a new coach in order to get himself in the Top 10. That would be awesome. I'm not familiar with Marrero, Fernando might not be enough to hold off the German onslaught.

Yes. Agreed.   Update:  Germans going for the kill in the doubles rubber.  Kohlschreiber replaced Brands.

Haas/Kohli now lead 1 set to love

Spain has leveled the match at one all with a tiebreaker set win of their own.  It's do or die for Spain.

Yep, I spent the whole day today at the Davis Cup matches. Andy against Young was a snoozefest, Andy outplayed him thoroughly. The second match was a thriller but it was so sad watching Sam Querrey's game collapse like that at the end, broken 5 times in a row at 4:3 in the fourth after not being broken even once until then!

My seat was way up in the stands so the pictures I took are not very good. There is only this one of the venue, a beautiful claycourt built at the baseball stadium in my city.

I did see some highlights of the match this morning and it did seem Andy was dominating the match from both wings. Young barely shook Andy's hand at the net after the match. He can be a bit of a prick - this Young.

From Andy fan perspective it was a very good match since Andy was so on and confident but from a general fan's perspective I am sure it was a snoozefest since Young wasn't able to much about it.

As to Querrey, I am not sure what happened but the result is somewhat surprising. I've seen Ward a bit at the Queens I think a couple of years ago. Not a bad player to be honest. To be fair Querrey is not in form lately so it wasn't totally unexpected. And Andy always tends to motivate his team. He brings a lot of positive energy to the team so it's possible he rubbed a lot of it off on Ward.

Thanks for that lovely picture btw.

Great results for Germany no doubt but both Kohlschreiber and Mayer are a couple of very good and experienced players. Mayer is very in form at the moment while Feli is on his way down. Agut had a very good AO so this DC might have been a bit too soon.

I do like both Kohlschreiber and Mayer a great deal but I also got to like Agut a great deal at the AO and I've always liked Feli but not because of his good looks - don't care for that - just that he's got a very good game. Seems very well rounded. He's mentally very weak however.

So Germany got it done in 4 sets, winning the final set and the tie on the only break of serve in the match - 6-3.  Congrats to their team. Commiserations to Spain's third tier of players.

Spain is out for this year.   Germany moves on to play France!   France just took the doubles match and the tie 3-0, courtesy of Gasquet and Tsonga, 5-7, 7-6(4), 6-2, 7-5, over Hewitt/Guccione.  Australia outmatched.  Tomic was injured.  Hewitt, Kyrgios, and Guccione couldn't stay with them.

Now we can add congratulations to the Swiss team.  Their doubles team of Chiudinelli/Lammer "upset" the more experienced Serbians Zimonjic/Krajinovic, 7-6(3), 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-2 to seal the victory in the tie 3-0.

Congrats to the Swiss team, credit a tired Federer and a "mentally and physically exhausted"  Wawrinka for making the long haul flight from Australia to play.

Condolences to the Serbian team that was left without a top player when Djokovic pulled out because he was "mentally and physically exhausted", and Tipsarevic was carrying an injury and Troicki is banned for antidoping violation refusing to take the blood test.

Switzerland will move on to play Kazakhstan or Belgium with the former leading the tie 2-1.

Great reviews of the Davis Cup. This is one contest I hardly ever get around to watching, but I do want to know what's going on. So, I was able to get my stuff done without procrastinating.

Congratulations to all of the winners.

Quite predictably the UK doubles team lost to the Bryan Brothers today. Now it's up to Andy to win his match against Querrey tomorrow.

well nadal cant even practice right now but ferru has no excuse.

he plays everything under the damn sun anyway.

he could have helped out for sure.

robredo has been doing well as of late. perhaps he should have been given a chance.
