Halle Main draw in Post #1.

#1 Nadal (if he plays) projected path to final - Bye>Brown>Kohlschrieber/Janowicz>Raonic/Kubot/Gasquet

#2 Federer projected path to final - Bye> Sousa > Youhzny/Karlovic > Nishikori/Monfils/Haas

Toughest grass players in bold

Nadal might play as he probably doesn't have to play until Thursday next week.  Federer and Nadal both have a tough 3rd round, Kohlschreiber beat Nadal two years ago here, Janowicz lost to last year's champion Murray in semis.   Youzhny last year's finalist, pushed defending champion Federer to 3 sets.  Haas potential semifinalist if healthy, took the title 2 years ago against Federer.

Federer is doing double duty in Halle:

he is playing singles and doubles.

Trying to get as much grass and net practice as possible.
I think you'll see Federer serve and volley much more than he has at Halle and Wimbledon in recent times.

Federer is being smart.

you point is spot on general.

this is another reason why he has Edberg in his corner. he will advise Federer to maximize his abilities at the forecourt.

Yes. Janowicz has been sad this year. He has 720 SF points to defend at Wimbledon, so he better pick up his play in a hurry, no?

I know, it's weird, but his life did change very dramatically. It's one thing to be wondering how you're going to get the entry fee for the next tournament, to having a fabulous run, and handling all of those conflicting emotions, but he'd do well to sort this all out before he ends up being in the same position as before.

General Hercules, Roger Federer plays doubles with Marco Chiudinelli against Seppi/Emmrich tomorrow, then singles on Thursday along with Rafa as you mentioned...

Dr. Ivo Karlovic looked very good taking down the Colonel, #6 seed Mikhail Youzhny, last year's Halle finalist.  Dr. Ivo is set to meet Federer in the quarterfinals if they both get that far.  Karlovic is always a good indicator of where one's return is on grass.

Robin Haase took out the 5th seed Richard Gasquet in the other upset today.

Monfils took out Benjamin Becker to move on to face Nishikori next.

thanks for the update general masterclass.

I think Federer is going to be quite sharp in Halle. he has had some extra time to get the feel for the grass courts.

playing doubles has to help his cause also.

dr ivo is just amazing. he keeps going and going.

Unseeded but dangerous Philipp Kolschreiber won his match against Herbert and will now face Rafael Nadal who opens up in the quarterfinal.

#3 Milos Raonic was sent off the premises by wildcard and #120 in the world, Peter Gojowczyk, 6-4, 6-4. Raonic just doesn't look good on grass. Ball gets too low for him, especially the slice, and he doesn't have good enough footwork.  Even his big serve can't help him. Clay is better for him.  He needs the bigger bounce, which helps him get to the ball.  Gojowczyk will now meet the Columbian, Alejandro Falla who can play well on grass.

#4 Kei Nishikori beat Gael Monfils in 3 sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.  Kei played the steadier of the two.  Monfils was poor and good, more of the former.

Andreas Seppi had to withdraw in his doubles match due to a virus early this morning. Swiss pair, Roger Federer and Marco Chiudinelli, recipients of the walkover, decided to come on the court anyway for practice, and "some" fans showed up to see the living legend. :)
