Murray Aims to Take Bite Out of Djokovic's Rankings Lead in China

By REUTERSOCT. 3, 2016, 7:03 A.M. E.D.T.

(Reuters) - Andy Murray begins his late-season assault on Novak Djokovic's world number one ranking at the China Open this week hoping to take a chunk out of the 4,695-point gap separating them.

The Briton has enjoyed one of the best years of his career, winning Wimbledon and the Olympics, and could still finish the season by toppling the Serb who has been ranked number one since July 2014.

While on the face of it the gap still looks huge, Djokovic is defending far more points than Murray until the end of the season and he will not be able to defend his China title after withdrawing due to an elbow injury.

Djokovic, 29, finished last season in unstoppable form, winning in China, Shanghai and Paris before claiming the ATP Tour Finals. He has 3,800 points to defend for the rest of the season to Murray's 1,160, meaning there is the possibility of a large swing in Murray's direction.

Should Murray win in China and take the 500 ranking points on offer he would move 1,000 points closer to Djokovic ahead of Shanghai where he lost to Djokovic in the semis a year ago.

Murray has spoken of his desire to become the first British player to reach number one since computer rankings were introduced and with Djokovic apparently suffering injury niggles he has a realistic shot.

"I've never been there and it's something I would like to do for the first time, which is maybe more of a motivation for me than some of the guys that have been there before," he said.

"But I want to just try and finish this year strong from a personal point of view. It's been my best season to date, and I want to try to finish it as best as I can."

However, Murray has also had a grueling year and needed to rest a thigh injury ahead of Beijing - a legacy of his Davis Cup exertions when he lost a five-set cliff-hanger to Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro last month.

"I needed a break anyway and I haven't been able to practise as much as usual coming into an event like this," he said.

"But I feel healthy, my leg feels good. I think this week I need to be realistic with maybe how I'm going to play.

"I have very few days of practice coming in here and I'm not putting too much pressure on myself right now."

ok I got it now. it was a personal message from MWW to me. here it is in its entirety:

------------------------

your thread

I regret to have to read a rather embarrassing exchange between yourself and Time Violation. He has seen a lot in his time on this board with some extremely stubborn and uncompromising posters who can make mods' life hell, and perhaps why his attitude towards you wasn't the greatest, though of course not excusable. Naturally as a moderator, he also has to defend the site moderation when it is being challenged (not necessary implying we are right all the time, of course).

For me, as one of the youngest moderators on the site (and one of the lesser experienced, started in October last year after 9 months on the forum), I have tried to merge moderator and poster values together. You will see that it is hard to balance this well. We'll have some posters who think we are too overzealous in our moderation and banning, while others consider us too lenient and let too many trolls post etc. If you walk onto the next site, tennisforum, their posters will say very different things about how TF is run and moderated. I am the greatest moderator on this site to some, and also the worst moderator on this site to others and both stand to be correct!

Thus I think it would be worthwhile to have a positive discussion on the issue. Your concerns have lead me to start a thread for mods to consider amending the 'moderator change edit' rule. The issue sometimes is with whether mods apply a liberal approach, or by the book. By the book is the 'easiest' approach but does have its difficulties at times and doesn't take into account poster motivation or intent. Originally the rule was set to prevent troll posters who would repost problematic posts after they had been deleted. I definitely think how the rule is applied these days has drifted from the original intent and we do have complaints about it. You won't be the first nor the last so I hope the mod team can sit and come up with suitable revision.

The situation with your thread arose based on reports that your thread title 'directly quoted' off Stan and was considered misinformation. I would not have made any changes if it were up to myself because I did not see any intentional malice or attempt to confuse with the information. Only a few posters found objection to it and reported it. Legal aspects are probably the most difficult for moderators to really apply. I remember in another case, a poster who contributes interesting articles got reported for sending in a complete article, someone reported it and cited 'copyright' infringements. There is also a hidden rule that posters should avoid posting 'getty images' based on similar ownership and IP laws. So I regret that this situation has happened but it's something we can all learn from.

There are some situations where seemingly strict rules have purpose. Slasher1985 introduced a policy that posters must use objective thread titles when reporting match result threads or WWW threads, and in polls. You will see this is a far cry from tennisforum where player nicknames are often used. The importance of the rule on our site is to avoid derogatory language and player bashing, as well as to make archival of results easier as the players' actual names and score are very clear to see.

I hope you can contend with us. We are a small team and we don't always satisfy everyone's wishes. We can't and even more so because of our diversity in nationalities, gender, beliefs and age. But we hope to be open to suggestions to make the forum run smoother. In fact your return to the forum was only possible because of such suggestions regarding permaban policies.

Thanks for posting this General.  MWW is indeed reasonable and pretty middle of the road.

For what it's worth, I think it is tough moderating MTF with how can I say it, with so much history behind it.
Many of the forum rules are from a bygone day. They have been taped and patched along the way, and it looks like some effort is made to preserve many things, and change others a bit here and there.  Users have come and gone.  Many of the old users are no longer there or rarely appear.

I think a serious attempt should be made to rewrite the rules from scratch, and consideration must be given to keeping the site interesting and informative for the current day where there is so much competition with other social media like twitter, Facebook, etc.   I for one prefer forum discussion to soundbite posting on twitter, for example.  But that's only me.

Of course rules are needed to keep crazy people from totally abusing the forum and other posters.  Sure, most people have their favorites, and some of the most driven fanboys/fangirls think everyone else with any opinion that is other than a lovefest for their favorite, is a hater's opinion, while their hero can do no wrong.  Criticizing their player in any way is tantamount to the worst crime in their eyes, and they see everything as an attack.

But by and large, most posters are fairly reasonable given a chance.  However, when the reasonable people leave, a lot of the worst survives, which makes it difficult for the more reasonable posters to have the patience to stay.  Moderation tries to accommodate to what's being thrown at them.  Too much for some is too little for others, and vice-versa.   I generally think that not much moderation is needed except to control some of the more vicious abusers.  Some of the rules are really over the top.  Review and overhaul might be the best way.  I won't say it's easy in a huge site like that, but at some point something has to be done.  Maybe MWW will be a catalyst for change.

Here we have an advantage for now.  It's small, quiet, people are friendly, and we accept and adjust to each other.
It is a haven if you will, a Camelot of Forums.

that is a great post general. it really spells it all out.

I can add only one thing: it is a new world now. what we are learning from watching this new world is that people have a voice now. and they want to be able to have a voice.

they also have endless options in this new world. we talked about the massive array of new social innovations. in addition hardly a month goes by when a new social media innovation is not introduced.

For instance, Stephen Curry and his friend from Davidson founded Slice which is a social media outlet for the stars and the celebrities of the world. it just goes on and on.

Twitter and Facebook are the largest but there are so many other ones also in use.

finally people also want more dynamic and more real time interactions and exchanges. they want instant audiences. they can get that at social medial innovations.

so MTF really has to understand that. unremitting, nonstop meddling has to end. they are gaining a few new members but they are also losing people. it is just a shadow of what it used to be.

more later.

I just took a look at tennis4you forum.

nobody has posted at their tennis discussion board since September 12.

and did I mention that they have over 6000 members. they also have been around a long time.

tennis forums are suffering everywhere but the imbecile mods and admin at MTF are making sure that MTF suffers more then they need to.

Talk Tennis is doing fine.

There could easily be a place as popular as MTF if it was run correctly.

I don't think things like Twitter are killing forums.

I sure would like to see some of the banned MTF folks here.

I think they also jacked Freaky around there a while back so now he just doesn't feel like posting much there. he also may have lost some of his friends there who are gone for good.

he is obviously more than welcome here.

Tiger Tim is also welcome here but I don't know how you get him to tear away from MTF.

Dimitrov runs over Rafa.

This was never in doubt.

We called it right here. He was going to beat 2 legless clowns and then get run over by a decent player.

The second he runs into a decent player, it is the exit for him.

Rafa is done.

he hangs around for the spotlight and the money.

he is making more money now than ever before. his star shines brighter than ever because he is one of the legends of the sport.

he is doing nothing to improve and he has done nothing to improve in nearly 4 years.

in the past at least he played a lot which kept his ground game sharp enough for him to win titles.

he simply has no hunger and no drive.  but he does have lots of lip service for his fans and his sponsors.

he will get torched in Shanghai and at some point there will be more of stupid exos and then there will be IPTL.

this man has zero interest in winning anything.

he will get torched in Shanghai and at some point there will be more of stupid exos and then there will be IPTL.

this man has zero interest in winning anything.

Rafa invited Federer to his Academy for the "official opening".  These are 2 of the world's top fan draws and sponsor magnets.
Their combined value is off the charts.

But that is off court.  Tennis is another matter.

1. Federer hasn't played since Wimbledon trying to rest and recover fully from his knee injury, surgery, and aggravation of the injury at Wimbledon.  In that time he has taken holiday, been taking altitude hikes in the Swiss Alps, been appearing at various social and media events.  So no real tennis, except hitting around a bit.  Now he is going to start the hard work.  Here he is a couple of days ago doing agility drills in the gym. From twitter and instagram:

Mirror, mirror, on the wall.  Who is fastest of them all?

Nobody knows, including Federer, what will happen.  He's following the advice of medical professionals.  Will the knee take the strain of getting fit to play top level singles tennis?  Will it take the strain of hours of practice?  Will it take the strain of match play, and playing against the best?  Roger has a positive outlook, but anything can happen.

But positiveness, negativity aside, one must talk about reality in serious tennis analysis.  Roger is in his 36th year on the planet and has over 1300 matches played. It is extremely tough to recover from injury at that age and mileage. Most great pros have been retired for years.  Only a few, in a bygone age, when tennis was played quite differently, managed to succeed in singles tennis at such an advanced stage. "Muscles" Ken Rosewall, "Pancho" Richard Gonzales(z) played and won tournaments into their 40's.  But that was a different age in tennis.

Later, Jimmy Connors played his last major final at the 1102 match mark at Wimbledon, close to 33 years old.  More recently, Agassi got to his last major final at 1119 matches at 35, after a mid-career interlude. This was the mark for longevity until Roger.  Federer reached his last final in the 2015 US Open at 1282 matches played.  Nobody has come close.   Lendl's last major final was at the 1061 mark.  Federer's due date is long past in terms of other modern players.   It's very difficult to see him being a factor from now on. But like all great players, we cannot so simply write him off.  If he can overcome the knee problems maybe he'll be competitive and play into his 40's.  Who knows?

2. Nadal has been playing, and he says he has recovered from his niggling wrist issues earlier in the season. But now he and Uncle Toni have added another player to the list of players where they say the level is very high - Grigor Dimitrov.  On the other hand, Nadal has done well in doubles this year.  Olympics Gold and he and Carreno-Busta just won the China Open title over Sock/Tomic for his second doubles title, equaling his singles title mark this year (MC, Barc).  Doubles doesn't require the fitness singles does. Rafa can extend his career in this way if he wants.

Rafa's last major final was over 2 years ago at Roland Garros, his 834th match.  He did not make a QF this year.  Now he has played 979 matches on tour.  He is obviously getting up there in mileage as he approaches 31.  Should he continue to play much in conditions which are normally difficult for him, like hard courts and indoors, or should he focus on his best surface, clay?  Regardless, he must be fit enough to compete at a high level.  The hard work must be done and he needs to be strong enough and have the endurance to play his game.  For him, and his style, it is a tough task.  As he gets older, he might have to adjust the old game.  General Hercules and I have spoken of this before.  He needs to centralize his court positioning.  He can't be playing out of his backhand corner whipping forehands.  He must rely more on his backhand so he can play more centrally.  He also can't play near the stands; he must play closer to the baseline.  One believes to have a chance of succeeding in majors, he must focus on clay.  It is where he can achieve the highest level relative to other players.

Again, as with Federer, we can talk all day about all the great things he does off the tennis court. All of his positive traits, his contributions, his Academy, his family.  But as far as the actual tennis goes, and to assess his chances of winning at the highest levels, we have to analyze objectively.  Wishful thinking won't get it done.  As with any aging player, he has to work harder and smarter than before to be as fit as he needs to be to last into deciders, especially the 5th set in majors.   He needs some luck too.  He has to hope he doesn't get into repeated long battles.  One, here or there, ok.  But not consecutively.  Long gone are the days of beating Verdasco in 5 and Federer in 5.  Unfortunately, since 2015, what I've observed is that he has trouble playing more than 2 sets well against the better players.  This just isn't good enough to get it done in a major, and in many lesser tourneys.  In my opinion, his best singles tennis of this year in any tournament was at Monte Carlo. True that he didn't play Djokovic, but He won the title beating Thiem, Wawrinka, Murray and Monfils,  and he won the last two in 3 sets each.

Rafa is 39-13 this year.  That's a .750 winning pct. same as 2015.  Those are his lowest percentages since 2004.  If nothing changes, one cannot see how he is going to improve.  As General Hercules says he isn't seeing the overall improvement in fitness and segments of his game.  The same pattern appears.  He plays well for a couple of matches, then has a poor match, and if it is against a better player, he loses.  Two steps forward, one step back.  This is not being negative.  These are the facts. Rafa admits it himself.  From this, it doesn't look encouraging that he can win another major, but like Roger, I will not write a great player like Rafa off until he hangs the racquet up.

Respectfully,
masterclass

great post general.

you hit the nail on the head: if nothing changes

that is the big problem. no way to improve and be competitive again if he simply refuses to change anything at all.

the decline is continued with that strategy. he is not any better today than he was last year.

he is far worse.
