well at least Roger is talented and can just walk out there and beat most players anytime he feels like it.
clay warrior does not have that luxury. he has a demanding style of play because of the heavy topspin he employs off both wings. he doesn't have a big serve and he returns poorly on quicker courts.
that style of play requires superhuman fitness and supreme physicality.
I had that same style of play. only exception is that I used a Muster/Vilas like topspin backhand.
I had to practice 4-6 hours day and often go on runs of 10 miles or more after practice. and once I switched to cycling from running, I rode my bikes 300 miles a week just to keep my required level of fitness.
unfortunately I did not discover weights until I injured my shoulder and my lower back from such a demanding style of play.
what allowed me to become physically strong and muscular without work in the training room was that I hit 7 days a week. I also hit a minimum of 2 hours a day against wall. hitting with heavy topspin for hours and hours helps you develop some physicality.
the wall was my secret weapon. that is where I also was able to work on my strength. I hit as hard as it was possible to hit. I just destroyed tennis balls I hit so damn hard.
so that was one of the ways I worked on my physicality while I was working on my consistency.
clay warrior just doesn't feel like working anymore.
