que pasa general sid. thanks for firing up the shanghai masters thread.

here is the draw:

http://www.atpworldtour.com/Share/Event-Draws.aspx?Year=2013&EventId=5014&Draw=ms

looks like nole got lucky. he does not have to deal with del potro. roger does have to game to derail him in a best of 3 sets foremat.

we will just have to see. its tough not having murray in the mix. it makes it too easy for somebody.

I sincerely hope Rafa withdraws or tanks in R2/R3.

he really should have skipped the china open. he wasted too much time trying to get rid of fognini.

and there really was no need to hand nole a win. I saw the first set.

nadal was simply terrible and nole could not miss. and hence you have a straight set win by nole.

nadal could have used this time more wisely like getting some much needed rest and recuperation.
and putting in work on the backhand and the return during his training sessions.

he lost because of this:

1. his backhand and his return were terrible

2. he was stale which led to his movement being weak

and of course nole is playing well again so that is a huge factor.

Yep, I also think that playing Beijing was a mistake. Let's see what happens in shanghai now, it is not too late to withdraw ;)

maybe he is just getting matches under his belt so he will be ready for the Australian open.

who knows what the hell he is thinking but all this tennis activity is way too risky at this point. this is how he has always gotten injured. he overdoes it.

I would rest at this point and train a little bit on clay to keep the ground game sharp. clay is also easier on the joints for him.

But possibly playing Beijing/Shanghai/Basel/Paris/WTF is way, waaaaay too much! I don't know what Rafa's thinking but he better take some rest before WTF.

perhaps he wants to lock up the ranking situation before showing up at the O2 arena in London.

but I agree. he needs to skip paris at least.

It'll be interesting to see how Nadal regroups after Beijing and how Fed does after a long break! Hopefully it should be a great tournament.

welcome to Camelot.

Camelot general chat is right next door to lady emma`a café.

great to see you here. something is wrong with your avi. it did not quite come out right.

also I am thinking about creating a special thread to honor roger. feel free to do so if you wish.

I will be more than happy to contribute.

I do believe that nole is going to take shanghai. only person that can stop him there is roger. he has the game to trouble nole in a best of 3 sets foremat.

nadal is worn out. he is just out picking up his massive appearance fee and racking up points in case he needs them.

Hello general Hercules, RF20Lennon, Mr. Tee, etc.

Roger Federer played his first match since the US Open, doubles with China's Ze Zhang as a wildcard team.  They easily beat Kevin Anderson and Dmitry Tursunov, 6-2, 6-1 in under 48 minutes.  Federer looked decent, especially on his serve, and I thought Zhang played very well.  They will play the 5th seeded team of Dodig/Melo next.  They are in the Bryans half of the draw, where they would meet in a semifinal if they both reach that far.

Here's the full match if anyone is interested:

I've advocated in the past that Roger should play more doubles when he gets a chance.   I think it sharpens his game.
He'll start his Shanghai singles run on Wednesday against Hewitt or Seppi.

It seems strange not to see Andy Murray in Shanghai.  He was champion 2 of the last 3 years and lost a tough final to Novak Djokovic last year.  Let's hope he recovers well from his surgery and makes it back by the Australian Open.  He may return as early as late November to play in the Barbados Dream Cup exhibition tournament, as a WTF appearance looks very unlikely.

Nadal is 2013 player of the year and comeback player of the year without having to do a darn thing more.  He needs to avoid  overplaying as he did in 2008 and arrive at the Australian Open rested and in good shape.  After Shanghai, I heard he is thinking of playing indoor hard courts of Basel, Paris, and the WTF to finish the season, and then going on an exhibition tour in late November in South America. He's also scheduled to play in late December in the Abu Dhabi Mubadala 3 day invitational, before heading to Australia.

Beijing should have been a bit of a confidence booster for Novak Djokovic.  Let's see if he can use that to his benefit the rest of the season and finish strong.  Juan Martin Del Potro is also looking in better shape heading into the home stretch. If he can avoid injury, he figures to do well.  Stan Wawrinka and Richard Gasquet have had pretty good years.  Let's see how much they have left.  Wawrinka's been nursing an upper thigh injury; hopefully it is better.

Respectfully,
masterclass

that is a great post general masterclass.

I will watch that match later tonight before I hit the sack. I have wanted to see roger play doubles.

doubles is a far better deal for somebody like roger than for nadal. nadal plays it wrong and is not able to derive the true benefits of doubles.

often times he just retreats to the baseline in doubles. and they usually try to hit to his doubles partner.

so all it is a waste of time for nadal and waste of valuable energy.

but roger on the other hand can use the doubles to get sharper for singles.

I have a feeling that roger and del potro will do well in Beijing.

nadal will collect his $1.5 million appearance fee and then try to rake in a few points. I cant see him winning it.

he looked very tired against fognini and nole.
