The definition of Religion in the Merriam Webster Dictionary states:
re·li·gion noun \ri-ˈli-jən\
: the belief in a god or in a group of gods
: an organized system of beliefs, ceremonies, and rules used to worship a god or a group of gods
: an interest, a belief, or an activity that is very important to a person or group
Does this mean that religion itself is a bad thing? You'll find the answer varies to those you ask whose beliefs differs from your own.
Religion (in a Christian aspect) becomes a stumbling block when it takes detour from the word of God and when churches adheres to church doctrines that are not Bible based, simply for the need of control, self glorification and self righteousness. I am not saying that all church doctrines are bad, as I know that they can also help keep things in order, but if it differs from the Word of God, then there is a big problem.
As you stated, Sir TheTruth, many are too anxious to gain positions, when they have only touched the surface of the water (in this case knowing who God is, His laws and His plan of salvation for mankind). Their need to feel self importance makes them fail in truly establishing a relationship with God and it is why you find many brethren that have members in churches for many years, some born and raised in their church, lacking in spiritual growth.
I say, "keep your eyes upon Jesus, never mind the storms brewing around you and the clashing of wind and thunder. Stay focus on your path and your journey, as it may differ from your brother, and should you fall, reach out and take hold of the hands that will never lead you astray, the hands of Jesus, the Christ".
