My RAVE:
Speaking of which, OMG Clay Death,
Do you remember when you told me about Khanacademy.org? I had gone over there and I guess I was in a lazy state of mind and couldn't figure out how to work it. I thought, I'll go back to it at another time. Well, my time is running short and I have to find a solution to my math phobia.
This phobia stems from the fact that when I was going to school I went to a small Catholic school from 1-8th grade, until I finally convinced my mother to let me go to public school. A decision in life that I am most pleased with, because the Catholic school was an insulated environment and one that I was not comfortable with. I had been planning my escape since the 2nd grade when the nuns wouldn't answer my questions about faith.
Now, the Catholic schools, at that time, focused on the basics, reading, writing, and arithmetic, but very little was done regarding math concepts. When I got to public school they offered a wider range of mathematics, science, and all of the other subjects, but mathematically I was behind because there were a lot of holes in my foundation and I didn't know how to repair the mess.
Algebra was difficult for me, but I studied hard and was able to get an A in my first class, but when I encountered it again, my mental block came back and I had to go through the same process again.
So last night I faced my demons and started working problems on this one website and it was actually fun. Alas, you were only allowed to do about 25 problems before they started asking you to subscribe for a price. It wasn't high, but I felt reluctant to subscribe.
Then, I remembered your recommendation and went to Khan Academy. I signed up and was immediately blown away. the way that site is set up is out of this world and Sal said that we could learn anything. You have to see it to believe it.
Anyway, I started doing these problems and for the first time I was actually enjoying math, it was fun, and like a game. But, it also highlighted those areas that I needed to shore up. I was having so much fun that I didn't want to stop.
I told my son about it this morning and he, seeing my excitement actually took the website down (a miracle) since he hates school even he is smart. but, he's lazy.
So, I am so glad that you introduced me to this website, because for the first time in my life I know that I am going to pass this class with full confidence. I cannot thank you enough for sharing this information.
THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU!
