I don't think Rafa should concentrate on the #1 ranking. Rankings and stats are fine, but to me they're secondary to a player's entire career. Plus, you can't win everything, so you have to accept what is a very exciting and prosperous career.

Sometimes as fans we want more for our player than is humanly possible, but I just want to support Rafa as long as he plays. If he quits tomorrow I will be eternally grateful for the high caliber matches I've been able to enjoy.

great post. that is well said.

and we will have his matches forever and ever at Camelot.

I can also tell you this: his best is yet to come.

he is going to show the world something they have never seen before.

and I steal that line from the movie "gladiator"

that is also rafa's favorite movie.

he is going to show the world 2 more RG crowns. he is the ultimate gladiator of the sport. his work is far from done.

Agreed, I don't feel down or exasperated about where he is. I believe that everything happens for a reason. Rafa is a blessed individual, so things will work out for his best interests. His parents have done a bang up raising him, because he is more than a tennis player, he is an inspiration and a reminder of the benefits of hard work and desire.

These are traits that I want for my son, who wants to become a performer. As scary as it is as a parent, I have to help him follow his dream to the best of my ability. He's a great guy. One of the most pleasant people I have ever met. I am very proud of him, based on his character. That's what is most important to me, character, because that trait cannot be created, it has to be natural.

But, I digress...

Here's an article that made me feel better about where Rafa is:

INTERNAZIONALI BNL D'ITALIA

Nadal 'Encouraged' By Clay Performance

Rafael Nadal has lost four consecutive battles against Novak Djokovic, including Sunday's Rome final.
Rafael Nadal spoke positively about his chances of winning a ninth Roland Garros title despite a fourth consecutive defeat to Novak Djokovic in Sunday’s Internazionali BNL d'Italia final.

“Two weeks ago, my chances to play well in Roland Garros were not very high,” said Nadal. “But I will arrive now more encouraged.”

The 27 year old’s European clay season began meekly, with the Spaniard making quarter-final exits in Monte-Carlo (l. to Ferrer) and Barcelona (l. to Almagro).
Nadal followed that up with a title win at the Mutua Madrid Open - his fourth in the Spanish capital - and Sunday’s runner-up finish at the Foro Italico.

“I’m very proud about this week,” Nadal said. “I earned 600 [Emirates ATP Rankings] points. I was able to play in another final here. I was able to compete well against Novak, probably one of the best players of the moment. I was able to play well against tough opponents like Andy Murray and Grigor Dimitrov.
“My feelings [about Roland Garros] are better now than one week ago. Each week of the clay season got better for me. I hope to be ready.”
