this was the forehand that ruled the planet.
Wow, that was 2014? Who is this imposter on court this year? Get it together Rafa. I know you will, hopefully in time for RG, 2015.
Rafa himself told us that his forehand lacks horsepower and consistency.
before that his uncle tony told us that.
and before that I forecast this happening over 5 years ago.
I knew this was going to happen.
I just cant see it any other way now. he took one hell of a risk by not playing a small event this week. he really should have gone to estoril or munich.
the danger of falling out of top 10 is very real now.
basically Rafa has to win Madrid in order to at least start hitting his stride.
and then in Rome he is likely to run into Nole very early. Rafa just needs matches right now.
Why did you forecast it? He was doing pretty well in 2012, 2013, and 2014 until the injury. What stuck out to you?
he played and won more hard court matches than anybody alive in 2008. it got him the Australian open in 2009 but he again refused to back off the hard courts after that. he would go to Rotterdam and finish the match against andy murray on one leg. he would also end up losing to soderling at RG and then was forced to skip Wimbledon. and this is when he was at the top of his game
he could not back off the hard courts when he had to and needed to.
he installed an indoor hard court in Mallorca.
I knew his infatuation with hard courts would cost him his ground game and also bring him many injuries.
again you have to have played a game very similar to his game and at a fairly high level to see lot of this.
general masterclass is in complete agreement with this. hard courts cost him. rafa has even said repeatedly that he needs to back off the hard courts a little but only thing that forces him off the hard courts is injuries.
I think the exact time to back off the hard courts a little bit was after winning the u.s open in 2013.
that was a perfect time. he had achieved everything he ever wanted on those courts.
there was no need to chase #1 considering he will soon be out of top 10.
it would also eventually injure him and it did. his body hit the wall at the Australian open in 2014.
That makes sense, but I'm sure Rafa wanted to do things outside of clay. I can hardly blame him, but a lot of it had to do with not managing is schedule properly. His camp has never been good at that, or Rafa doesn't listen to them. We'll never know.
