Things are beginning to heat up...

Matches of the day:

Dimitrov / Dolgo - two of my favourite players.  Grigor nudges it in the "favourite stakes" but I just love watching Dolgo's unorthordox approach.  Grigor in 4.

Berdych  / Cilic - Cilic is fairly useful on grass but needs to serve well.  I'm still going with Berd.  Again, in 4.

great to see you Baron. I will stop by soon. I have not forgotten to fire up a special birthday thread for Rafa at tennis frontier for the Rafa fans there.

Federer/s birthday is coming up also so maybe we can get somebody to do something similar there for him.

I had been out all day and most of the evening yesterday. I have a busy day again today.

I think you are right: action is starting to heat up. so many players are playing well.

Federer was on fire yesterday.

nole, dimitrov, nioshikori, berdych, and the like are also adapting well to grass already.

I don't know if they showed the third set, but what the heck happened? 6-1 in the third? That was a head scratcher.

I thought Berdych would pull it out, too, but he hasn't been doing so well in the majors lately. He seems to struggle with tall guys like himself. How ironic.

Seriously? What is Roger Federer's problem? I've tried, but I cannot stand this man. I thought he had gotten better as he aged and was losing, but his mind games have got to go. This issue about time between points is recent Nowhere in the history of tennis has their been such an adherence to the 20-25 second rule. If you look at an old match during McEnroe's time, they took as much time as they wanted. I don't see how Rafa even stays nice with him. FEDERER IS A JERK. I cannot wait until he gets out of the game. He is such a pretentious prig, and there is nothing classy about him, at all.

I guess the 10-33 keeps him up at night, that and all the talk about Nadal possibly overtaking him. Every time they are slated to meet in a tournament, you can bet on Roger "leaking" his insecurities to the press.

Go away. I can't wait until this man retires.

End rant.

Roger Federer hopes umpires can 'do their job correctly' and put an end to time wasting
Roger Federer has discussed the irritation of players taking too much time between points
Swiss star wants players to 'all be judged the same way'
Rafael Nadal is one of the worst culprits for time wasting

Roger Federer’s tone was polite but firm as he came off court on Thursday night and discussed the eternal irritant of the time players take between points.
No names were mentioned, but he made it clear he feels umpires need to be more consistent in applying the rule which says that, at Grand Slams, only 20 seconds should be taken from one rally ending to another beginning.
Lukas Rosol had complained about the leisurely pace of play from Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard is the player most associated with an issue that refuses to go away. It is only one of three areas in which players are breaking or stretching the regulations, and tennis officialdom is usually too weak to clamp down.
Irritated: Roger Federer believes umpires need to clamp down on players taking too much time between points
Irritated: Roger Federer believes umpires need to clamp down on players taking too much time between points
The others are toilet breaks taken between sets — a spurious practice  now out of control — and grunting or yelping, which is not only a turn-off for audiences but sometimes a contravention of the general ‘hindrance’ rule.
The application of regulations can be confusing. Smash your racket — an inanimate object — in frustration and you get fined. At Wimbledon, wearing an item of clothing that is not white is almost a hanging offence.
Yet do something that is contrary to the letter or the spirit of the rules which gives you an edge and nobody does much about it.
Let’s revisit what Federer said at this year’s Australian Open after losing to Nadal in the semi-final.
‘I’m not complaining much about the time but I’ve played him 33 times and he’s got two point penalties,’ said Federer.
‘We should all be judged the same way, not just a guy on Court 16 who you can give a time violation to just because you can. On Centre Court they’re always going to be afraid to take those decisions. I don’t want to complain all the time. I just hope they do their job correctly.’

He clearly feels that, on this issue, some are more equal than others. A recent, high-profile instance came in the women’s French Open final, where Maria Sharapova continually stalled her less experienced opponent Simona Halep.
Waiting game: Rafael Nadal has a habit of taking his time while between points
Rules: Players are not allowed to do anything that causes a ¿hindrance¿ to their opponents

Slow: Rafael Nadal likes to take his time on the tennis court

Only after two hours and 24 minutes did umpire Kader Nouni summon up the courage to issue a warning.
Grunting or yelping is a greyer area, as some players — men and women — subconsciously resort to this when under extreme pressure.
Yet there are those who use it as an established technique. Serbian Bojana Jovanovski, who hollers a lingering cry of something like ‘Ajjar!’ every time she hits the ball, is the worst offender.
Opponents do not like to complain as they fear showing weakness, yet this practice is surely a ‘hindrance’ to the large majority of players.
Hurry it up: Lukas Rosol (above) complained about the leisurely pace of play Nadal on Thursday
Crime and Punishment
Time between points: 20 seconds allowed at Grand Slams, 25 seconds on regular tour events.
Serial offenders include: Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic,  Maria Sharapova. Solution: Introduce a hard and fast 25-second rule across the whole sport backed by a shot clock if necessary, with umpire discretion after long rallies.
Grunting/yelping: Players are not allowed to do anything that causes a ‘hindrance’ to their opponents.

Serial offenders include: Bojana Jovanovski, Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka, Carlos Berlocq. Solution: Declare that, from 18 months hence, making a repeat noise on every shot is outlawed.

Spurious comfort breaks: Visiting the toilet is allowed for genuine need, but is now nothing more than a commonplace tactic.

Serial offenders: Too many to mention. Solution: Allow three bathroom breaks per season and thereafter charge donations to tour charities for each break taken.

Jo Durie, Britain’s former world No 5, chuckled on Friday when asked about loo breaks, which most players assume as a right should they need to compose themselves or stall an opponent’s momentum.
‘I never once needed to go and I can’t remember other players doing it, either,’ she said.
How about this as a solution — allow players three bathroom breaks per season and after that ask them to contribute $3,000 to charity every time they ‘need’ to go.

Not sure why wanting players to play within the rules of the game makes somebody a jerk, but there you have it.

The background is that the players committee (elected by the players) have requested that umpires are more consistent in enforcing that rule and they haven't.  Pascal Maria maybe, but every few of the others.

The rule at majors is 20 seconds.  Federer has agreed that common sense should prevail after a long rally (i.e. allowing some flexibility), but obviously under most circumstances players should be averaging under 20.

great to see you Baron.

here are all the live scores. Rafa has coughed up the first set again.

I think if I have the numbers right, he has now lost the first set in 6 of his last 7 matches.

Rafa is just not himself lately. we knew he would will himself that RG crown but he continues to play suboptimal tennis for his own standards.

Well, Federer goes and back and forth. There have been many times that he's said that the time didn't bother him. Then, as soon as they're slated to play each other he's always coming out with these "articles." In fact, in my opinion, he's been a jerk ever since he's been on the tour.

Historically, this rule was never used, one only has to look at old matches to see that no one was concerned about the twenty second rule. Last month he was alluding to the fact that Novak didn't have a wrist injury, maybe he didn't, but that's not Federer's place to blast that to the world.

How many players came out and said that they didn't believe his "mono"? I know I didn't believe it because the stories and dates kept changing. Or, when he was having all of those losses and he blamed his back.

Throughout the Big 3's career Federer has been known to constantly make snide remarks and innuendos about all three of them, so I think he's a jerk and I always have.

I've never warmed to his statements, such "I enjoy playing Roddick and not just because I beat him." And, "Sometimes I amaze myself." I think they overhyped him and now he believes his own press, but the bottom line is that whenever he and Rafa are slated to play, conveniently one of his jewels slips out. The timing is suspect

I have tried very hard to like this man, as I do respect his achievements, but every time he wins a tournament, no matter how long the drought, he acts like it's 2004 again.

He reminds me of a mean girl with his slithery comments He's not a god, although he acts like he is. People are entitled to like what they like, but me personally, I don't sportsmen who have so much to say about their peers. This is supposed to be a "gentlemen's sport" Federer needs to act like a gentleman instead of spoiled brat.

Sorry, but that's how I feel. I couldn't take it anymore with his hypocritical, always wanting people to bow down to him behavior.
