Lepus

The pregnant hare brought to the Island of Leros to feed the people until it bred out of control. The villagers eventually exterminated them and Zeus placed the Lepus among the stars because rabbits do what they do and it wasn’t their fault.

Libra

The only constellation not associated with a living species. Libra represents scales held by the goddess of justice, Astraea.

Lyra

The musical string instrument created by Apollo, the god of music, medicine and light. He is often confused as the god of the sun, which that description belongs to Helios.

Milky-Way

Cronus father of the 12 Olympians swallowed all of his children, for fear of them overthrowing him for his kingdom. When it came to him swallowing his youngest, Zeus, his mother gave Cronus a rock in swaddling clothes instead. Before he swallowed his son, he asked Rhea to nurse the child before the dastardly deed. Rhea kept of the pretense and breastfed the rock. Milk squirted out into the galaxy instead of a child’s mouth, thus creating the Milky Way. (Too cute a story)

Ophiuchus

Also known as Asclepius, was raised and trained by Chiron the great Centaur to be a physician. He was so good, that he could bring the dead back to life. That infuriated Hades, the god of the underworld and asked his brother Zeus to punish the mortal. Zeus struck Ophiuchus with a lightning bolt, killing him. But, felt pity for him and placed him among the stars.

Orion

A great hunter that was close to the gods. He fell in love with Artemis, goddess of the moon and hunt, provoking the jealousy of her twin brother, Apollo. Apollo felt that Orion was taking too much of his sister’s time and she began to neglect her duties to guide the moon. Apollo complained to mother earth, Gaia and she sent a scorpion to kill Orion. A great battle ensued, and both dying as a result. Zeus placed Orion in the winter sky and the scorpion in the summer sky so that they would never see each other again to battle.

Pegasus

Winged horse created from the blood of the gorgon, Medusa, when it dripped to earth as her head was decapitated by Perseus. It is rumored that he was conceived by the god of the sea, Poseidon, when his mother, Medusa was mortal and born after her death.

Perseus

Grandson of King Acrisius and the son of Zeus and the mortal Danae. His grandfather received a prophecy that his grandson would one-day overthrow and kill him, so he tried to keep his daughter from ever getting pregnant by locking her in a tower. Zeus said, “No, I want her.” Danae ended up pregnant. For her treachery, Acrisius threw her and her newborn son into a chest and set them out to drown in the sea, since shedding the blood of a relative was blasphemy. Zeus asked his brother to care for the two and brought them safely to the island of Seriphos. Perseus grew and went on adventures and ended up joining the funeral games for a king, Perseus threw a discus and unbeknownst to him, his grandfather was in the audience and the discus took a sharp turn, killing him…thus fulfilling the prophecy.

Two koi fish that represent the goddess of love, Aphrodite and her son, Eros. The monster Typhon decided one day that he was in love with the goddess and caught them on a lake shore. The water nymphs feeling sorry for the deities, turned them into the koi fish to get away from him. With appreciation, the fish were placed among the stars.

Pleiades

Seven daughters of Atlas and the sea nymph, Pleione. Pursued by Orion, they were changed into doves to get away. Zeus placed them among the stars just to the west of Orion so he could see them but never be able to reach them.

The Archer. “Chiron was born half man and half horse, whereas the other centaurs were born of the sun and rain clouds. One day Chiron was accidentally shot with a poisoned arrow by Hercules. Even though he was a great physician, Chiron could not heal himself. Being immortal, Chiron could not die but was pained by the poisoned arrow. In order to die, Chiron offered to replace Prometheus who was punished by the gods for giving fire to man. As Chiron gave up his immortality to release Prometheus from his chains, Zeus king of the gods saw the kindness of Chiron and immortalized him in the stars.” Source: http://www.globeatnight.org/mythology/sagittarius
