Unless injury occurs, I believe Andrew Murray, OBE will be the next #1 player in Men's Tennis, sometime before Monte Carlo 2017.

Andy Aims to Topple Novak Djokovic From #1 spot

Novak has a tremendous amount of points to defend compared to Murray and his recent comments seem the reverse of Andy's.

Novak Djokovic says Grand Slams and #1 Ranking not a priority.

Andy might manage it before year's end, but Novak would have to lose early in the 3 or 4 remaining tournaments and Andy win almost everything.

Andy's forehand looked much improved in Beijing.
He was very aggressive with it.  He absolutely needs a better forehand and better second serve to win at the top level.

Novak may be vulnerable.

We will see what things look like after Shanghai.
