It is a good loss and a tank job. There's no point for him to play Djokovic and take another loss before WTF or even AO. Nadal is a player of confidence and I am sure he feels Nole is his main rival. Both crucial for his confidence in order to keep it alive and running.
Had Federer won the match to vs Nole, I am sure Nadal would have made the final too.
Speaking of Federer vs Nole - it was the first match I was able to see in Paris this year and the court looked really slow. I would have thought it was slightly faster than this. In fact, Paris has always been a fast indoor court.
