Far away in the distance
You can hear the screeching and the cackling
Somewhat subdued by the howling of the wind whipping the tree branches
Thrashing against the surrounding trees
The screeching continues
Blood curdling screams high pitched through the air
Causing the tiny hairs on the back of your neck to stand
Walking towards the screams
To investigate
Hopefully to help whoever is in such intense pain
Walking along the moonlit path something warm is seeping through the light shoes
In the dark all that can be felt is the warmth
But there is a stench that keeps getting stronger and stronger with each step
Closer to the door that’s 12 feet high and 3 feet wide
Old, rugged and worn
The screams seem louder as it appears to be behind this heavy door
Trying the latch and surprisingly the door opens ever so slightly
Much strength is required to push the heavy solid wood with steel ornamental door
It’s shoved open and the screeching is louder as each step is nearer
It’s much to dark to distinguish the shapes inside
The moon has allowed the walk to the door to be accomplished without a tumble
Against the wall is a lantern that’s lit
Walking towards the lantern feet feeling the chill of the cobblestone hallway
Shoes are squeaking with each step
Reaching out to unhinge the lantern from its post
The warmth of the lantern noting it’s been on for some time
The light is dancing back and forth across the high walls and ceilings
Playing its own dance
Looking down the shoes are blood stained and bright red
Shocked by the discovery I hear a scream that’s way to close
Only realizing it’s far too near
I hear a rustling right behind me
Something strikes my backside and loss of consciousness
As my head also hits the floor
