Playful as children steeped in innocence
Laughing at the animation on television
Then fighting over the one specific toy du jour
Grew up with my best friends
Both neighbors
Yvonne and Rhonda
One was a product of Chinese immigrants
The other a product from parents from Barbados
We played and laughed in our youth
I felt them as my sisters, this product of Greek immigrants
I didn’t look at their skin color
I didn’t judge them in any way but I wanted my turn with the ball
Shocked at the judgement by everyone at school
She’s chocolate and she yellow
You with the strange hairstyles wearing dresses in the dead of winter
Picking fights because we didn’t belong
Here’s the truth fvckers
I belong
Yvonne belongs
Rhonda belongs
We saw and looked forward on the daily
To play in one of our backyards
Until our Moms called us home
Before school started
Fond memories of my sisters from other misters.
