Don’t realize the stakes are high

Broken hearts belying behind masked smiles
Pain is etched in their eyes
Strenuously difficult to stare in a mirror
For the truth digs deep and the reflection does realize
The haunting look that conspires to be light
Gaunt, fraught with dislike and fright
Games are played to feel better
It’s selfish and egocentric at its base
Our need for validation keeps us unbalanced
Swimming in the muck and mire of twisted desires
That leave us bereft and empty
Wanting and needing yet unknown as to what that soul purpose is
We cry silently and yell loudly to keep the inner sanctum safe from
Prodding and excavating eyes of the soul
We’re all broken
We’re all hurting
We all just need love
We all need to feel like we’re enough and accepted
