When people had to seek permission
Whether to take a walk
Depending on the colour of your skin
Many were forbidden to talk
Stories of a different spin
Customary to try to protect your kin
Selling the liquid fire
To warm their bellies
Prohibition lasted 13 years
Instilling many fears

Hidden in the shadows
Observing without making a sound
In a protective stance anointed hallows
Misunderstood for so long
A barrage of hate was speared at his heart
Common people judged that he did not belong
He exercised his mind and body
His demeanour proud
Always stood for what was good & sound
Never a part of the crowd
Integrity & honesty as he stood his ground
A true warrior of the realm
Protecting the rightful Queen
For life or death
He vowed his protection would remain unseen

Sometimes it's just too hard to breathe
Feeling the pressure of daily life
Pulling that knife out of its sheath
Capturing your reflection off of the steel
Needing to cut out all the wicked heavy strife
Heaviness pulls you down
Forcing you to feel numb, but to feel
Who will care for the falling
Listen to the quiet screams
Baby steps of change stalling
Each of those broken dreams

Wrapping the blankets settling
Comfortably in the armchair
Enjoying the warmth with ease
Releasing worries with care
Tired of others constant meddling
Soothing are the flames
Looking at bright flare
Images startle me as I stare

The snow is floating down from the sky
Each unique flake seems billowy
A fresh blanket has covered the streets
Shovelling in the city becomes a meet and greet
Bundled up in layers upon layers
Thick socks in waterproof boots
Don't care what say the naysayers
Snow helps annuals right down to the roots
We've been lucky so far this year
Many are installing snow tires out of fear
One of the mildest winters in the last decade
I smile for when it snows
It's great to see people coming to each other's aid
Blanket of snow
Equals a blanket of kindness
