Trauma shattered the summer calmness
Thickness in the air
**** with every
Pop, pop, pop
Fear infused at the end of the smoking barrel
Menacing in his expertise at handling his single weapon
Focused on his task
To shoot and kill
Grieving
Listening to the sobbing sounds
Heaving breathes
Choking on the pain
That struck each victim
Big city Toronto
Bustling Danforth avenue
Where people of all walks of life
Visit the vast array of restaurants.
Sights, sounds and tastes worldwide
Immobilized in fear
Running away from this crazed man
Only to hunt them down
And shoot them again
Until they were lifeless
Mass shooting happened in my safe neighbourhood
Either my early morning, or late night walks
I always felt safe
The street lights guiding my footsteps
People walking by each other
Feeling like a village
In this big city
For years we celebrate the
Taste of the Danforth
It’s an annual event where up to
A million people visit to taste all
The cuisines of the world
On the Danforth.
I love my neighbourhood.
Fear descended and shattered its balance
For one horrific night
The celebrations will happen
In the meantime we have vigils for the lost souls
And for those holding on.
Spreading love
Always spreading love.
Finding it difficult to forgive the killer
Forgive him I do.
Forgive myself for the anger I feel
For under the umbrella of love
There is a plethora of possibilities
If only they shattered their skewed purpose
To change the hate
Focus on love
