I did not follow boxing much when it turned into pay per view only and missed Calzaghe. Great fighter no doubt. Going to have to watch his great fights. and make a better judgement on him. Was he like Stevie Collins who kind of got Benn and Eubank at the end of their careers?  I dont think so Roy Jones and BHop were still formidable and both had defense.

Baron will be able to answer that question best.

still going 46-0 is pretty damn special. he never tasted defeat.

Baron has probably seen the Italian Dragon a few times in person.

Calzaghe was blessed with great speed, could take a shot and could change styles mid-fight depending on how the fight was unfolding.  Hopkins was still very much a live and formidable opponent and that was actually a very tough fight.  Joe got dropped in the first round, although he wasn't seriously hurt and Hopkins really tested him.  I thought Joe deservedly won the fight through sheer work rate (nobody else has landed as many punches on Hopkins in his career). Hopkins is a great, great fighter though - an all-time great without doubt.

Jones for me, was pretty shot when he fought Joe and as such it was difficult for me to put too much name value on beating Roy.  He was a shell of a great fighter when took on Joe.   BUT.... Joe's speed would have always caused problems for Roy... it's difficult to say who would have won in their prime, but I seriously doubt Roy would have taken that fight in his prime either.

Calzaghe was accused by some as being a slapper... Jones said it before the fight but afterwards acknowledged he was a damn hard slapper!
Joe had a lot of problems with his hands throughout his career and punched harder when he was younger... He dropped granite chinned Eubank when they fought.

Of all the British and Island Super Middles, he was without doubt the best in my mind.  He absolutely ruined an unbeaten Jeff Lacy who was hailed as the next big thing at the time (Lacy was never the same again) and beat a prime unbeaten Kessler.   I saw him a few times live, including the Kessler fight in front of over 50,000 people at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff.

Thank you great response BritBox!
Calzaghe is top 5 super middleweight of all time no doubt.  Him, Benn, Eubank, Jones, Hopkins. I love his speed and combinations. His absolute annihilation of Manfredo was a spectacle to see. The super combinations. Good chin. I do recall him getting called a slapper.
I did see the Hopkins fight and he def deserved that win. Hopkins is amazing. Calzaghe style could have very well troubled Jones in his prime. The Movement and flurries from Calzaghe is def a good tactic against Jones.

Ok have watched many Calzaghe's  fights. Great boxer puncher. Not really bad in any area really. Hopkins fights Calzaghe 10 times he takes at least 4 every time. Prob 5. Calzaghe has the style to trouble Hopkins. That super flurries technique annoys the hell out of a fighter like Hopkins. The Break he pulled on Hopkins in the 10th was a joke. Fooled Joe Cortez big time.

Difficult to say with Hopkins... Great fighter (one of my all time faves), but until somebody finds a way to beat a guy (and nobody did with Calzaghe) then I'd be loathe to suggest he'd beat him numerous times.
