Spot on general.  I think a lot of rabid Nadal fans want the man to play and win every tournament out there.  It's just not going to happen.  He had a great run this year since his return in Vina del Mar, making what, 13 of 14 finals and winning 10 of them, plus over 10 million dollars in prize money.  I personally think he should take a short rest, go fishing or play golf or poker.  How much can one man do?

He is also going to be the hunted man now, not the hunter.  It does make a difference.  Ask Novak or Roger or even Murray.
A mental break is also needed occasionally.

Respectfully,
masterclass

by the way I just spoke with the baron. he said he will stop by Camelot.

I could not agree more. nadal managed to have perhaps his finest year since 2010. it all worked out but now his greed is getting the best of him again.

he did this in 2008: he played and won more matches on the hard courts than anyone alive in 2008. it netted him the Australian open in 2009 then it rendered him useless for a year.

so that is one year gone from his very prime. and in the process he did untold damage to his knee and his joints.

bottom line: he has lost at least 2 years of his prime years because of his madness and his greed.

I would forget about the damn #1 ranking and just save myself for 2014.

what nadal achieved this year is far more than just sick. it is ridiculous at best after that 7 month layoff. nobody ever expected it.

his style of play is not easy. it is the most demanding style there is.

he is taking way too much risk right now.

Just want to say Hello! This should be a decent tourney. Djokovic's got a fairly easy draw. Nadal will have some work in front of him. Might be good one if DelPo can get to Nadal.

welcome to Camelot general swordtennis.
you will always be welcome here.

I think nole is on a bit of roll now. his movement is crisp and he is striking the ball confidently.

right now my pick would have to be nole. its either him or del potro.

I don't think nadal is going to get this one done.

did you see your amazing super sig? I made 4 versions of it. it is posted at Camelot/general chat thread right next door.

This is traditionally more Nole's time of year and Nadal has already secured the US Open, so I'm not sure he'll be overly concerned about Shanghai.

I still suspect he'd like the Year end #1 though and I think he'll make a run at the WTF to add to the resume.

I am going to have to agree with you baron britbox.

also he is quite vulnerable in the best of 3 sets formats on quicker courts. fognini y had him on the ropes and should have been able to take that match at the china open.

I know all those nadal fans are hungry for that wtf crown but it is not going to come all that easily. nole could be a terror there again.
and roger might have the last word at wtf. he does well there.

it is good to see roger back. now we need andy back. the game is not the same without roger and andy.

Hello general Hercules, RF20Lennon, Mr. Tee, etc.

Roger Federer played his first match since the US Open, doubles with China's Ze Zhang as a wildcard team.  They easily beat Kevin Anderson and Dmitry Tursunov, 6-2, 6-1 in under 48 minutes.  Federer looked decent, especially on his serve, and I thought Zhang played very well.  They will play the 5th seeded team of Dodig/Melo next.  They are in the Bryans half of the draw, where they would meet in a semifinal if they both reach that far.

Here's the full match if anyone is interested:

I've advocated in the past that Roger should play more doubles when he gets a chance.   I think it sharpens his game.
He'll start his Shanghai singles run on Wednesday against Hewitt or Seppi.

It seems strange not to see Andy Murray in Shanghai.  He was champion 2 of the last 3 years and lost a tough final to Novak Djokovic last year.  Let's hope he recovers well from his surgery and makes it back by the Australian Open.  He may return as early as late November to play in the Barbados Dream Cup exhibition tournament, as a WTF appearance looks very unlikely.

Nadal is 2013 player of the year and comeback player of the year without having to do a darn thing more.  He needs to avoid  overplaying as he did in 2008 and arrive at the Australian Open rested and in good shape.  After Shanghai, I heard he is thinking of playing indoor hard courts of Basel, Paris, and the WTF to finish the season, and then going on an exhibition tour in late November in South America. He's also scheduled to play in late December in the Abu Dhabi Mubadala 3 day invitational, before heading to Australia.

Beijing should have been a bit of a confidence booster for Novak Djokovic.  Let's see if he can use that to his benefit the rest of the season and finish strong.  Juan Martin Del Potro is also looking in better shape heading into the home stretch. If he can avoid injury, he figures to do well.  Stan Wawrinka and Richard Gasquet have had pretty good years.  Let's see how much they have left.  Wawrinka's been nursing an upper thigh injury; hopefully it is better.

Respectfully,
masterclass

roger is looking sharp general masterclass.

and how about the Chinese player? he looks quite tall.

and quite good too.
